Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. A first edition - first printing of Volume IV of "The Letters of Virginia Woolf", published by The Hogarth Press in 1978. Illustrated throughout with monochrome photographic plates. ***Very good in sea-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased, but with no reading creases at the top of the spine. No other bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges foxed, mainly to the top edge (please see scans). Internally near fine with no previous ownership inscriptions or annotations. Pages clean with no foxing. No creases or tears. The paper used for this production is thin but of a nice quality. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of £11.95 net. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips or tears. Some light creasing to the extremities, especially at the top corner of the front panel. Some gentle fading to the spine colour, but no browning. Foxing to the inner flaps, with some browning to the edges. ***242mm x 160mm. 442 pages including an extremely detailed 16pp Index at the back of the book. ***'Virginia Woolf is forty-seven years old at the beginning of this volume, and nearly fifty when it ends. These were the three years when she wrote her masterpiece, "The Waves". We follow her struggle to bring this most difficult of her novels to completion, rewriting it three times, interrupted by illness and unwanted visitors, at Rodmell, Sussex, and at her house in Bloomsbury. In spite of her concentration on the book, she led an active life. She continued to meet old friends like Roger Fry, Lytton Strachey, T. S. Eliot, Desmond McCarthy, Vita Sackvillle-West and Ottoline Morrell, and made several new ones, of which the most important was the composer, Ethel Smyth.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First printing of the true first edition in very good condition. The individually published "Letters of Virginia Woolf" are quite hard to find now in collectable condition. We have listed the first four volumes of the six volume set (please see scans). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Angelica Garnett (illustratore).…
