A half brown leather hardback with gilt lettering on the spine. This is the first edition. Joseph Warton was an English academic and literary critic. In his early days he wrote poetry, of which the most notable piece is The Enthusiast, which was an early precursor of Romanticism. He was the older brother of Thomas Warton and a friend of Samuel Johnson. In a half calf binding. There is some wear to the extremities, including bumping to the corners, cracks on the spine and rubbing and general wear to the boards. The binding is loose, but secure, with both covers and all pages attached, although the front board is only attached by the cords and may come away in the post. The cords are otherwise not visible. Internally the pages are generally bright and clean with some mild brown spotting that is more prominent on the first and last few pages, handling marks, and ink and pencil inscriptions on the front end papers. Good Only. book.
