Worcester (1890-1969) served as a River Inspector for the Chinese Maritime Customs during the first decades of the 20th century, and spent 30 years wandering up and down the coast and rivers of China, surveying, marking, and opening the Yangtze to steam navigation, and during the 1930s carried out field research, culminating in a three-year internment in a Japanese prison camp during World War II.
