Aggiungi al carrelloAn unusual piece of First World War ephemera, a nicely-printed notebook intended for correspondence produced to raise funds for the charity. 48pp, 12mo, each page printed on its own leaf of wove paper. The leaves are perfect bound at the head, notebook-style, into grey card printed wraps, but with the glue now brittle and with the leaves now detached from the wraps, and with some leaves now loose. The first leaf carries a full page headed 'Asiles des Soldats Invalides Belges', with text in small print by the Président Henri de Schoonen explaining the 'But de l'Oeuvre' (beginning with 'Construction de maisons pour les invalides dans les communes où ils ont habité precedemment'), beneath a list of the names of the charity's officers, all within a decorative border. The other 47 pages have as letterheads reproductions of German proclamations and other documents relating to the war (some printed in colour), dating from between 1914 and 1917, and of illustrations by L. Huygens of war devastation, each page with the emblem of the Asiles des Soldats Invalides Belges at bottom left. Each image is duplicated several times. Laid down on the front cover, as part of the design is a reproduction of the 1915 German proclamation condemning Edith Cavell and others to death, and the back wrap reproduces a 'Chant Patriotique Belge' in French and Dutch. Printed at the head of the front cover was an armorial shield, with motto 'OEIL POUR OEIL DENT POUR DENT', but with the shield cut away to leave only the motto. Otherwise the item is a good survival, aged and worn but in fair overall condition, with no manuscript additions. The front cover (see image) is the Proclamation senencing Edith Cavell and others to death for treason. No other copy traced.

First American Edition. 280 x 215 mm. (11 x 8 1/2"). 187, [1] pp. HANDSOME DARK BLUE MOROCCO, GILT, covers framed by decorative roll and multiple gilt rules, floral spray cornerpieces, raised bands, spine compartments with central floral spray within a delicate frame, gilt lettering, PICTORIAL DOUBLURES using plates from the book (Arthur Rackham's "Unconquerable" at front; Waterlow's "Harvest Moon" at rear), each picture with gilt tooling at edge, within a wide frame of red and dark blue morocco tooled in gilt, blue morocco hinges, ivory watered silk free endleaves, all edges gilt. WITH 25 PLATES, consisting of a photographic frontispiece portrait of King Albert, 14 color plates mounted on heavy stock, and 10 black & white plates printed on glossy stock, almost all of these with original tissue guards. Just the faintest hint of shelf wear, one color plate with minor tear, but still a fine and handsome copy--clean and fresh internally, in a lustrous decorative binding. This sumptuously illustrated publication celebrating Belgium and its King Albert I is offered here in a lovely contemporary binding. Assembled in the early days of the First World War, this publication aimed to raise broader awareness and support for the plight of the Belgians at the hands of the Kaiser's armies, as well as honoring the nation's bravery. Novelist Hall Cain (1853-1931), who edited the anthology, wrote in the introduction that "Belgium has fought not only her own battle but also the battle of France, the battle of Great Britain and the battle of Freedom. By her brave stand against incalculable odds she has added a new and inspiring chapter to the heroic annals of humanity and perhaps lifted to a higher level the future destinies of man." Following the 1914 British edition by only a few months, our American printing includes a note that the publisher's proceeds are to be donated to the Belgian Fund. "King Albert's Book" includes text, music, and illustrations by nearly 240 contributors, including religious leaders (Aga Khan, the Archbishop of Canterbury), politicians (William Howard Taft, Winston Churchill), authors (Rudyard Kipling, Baroness Orczy), scientists (Guglielmo Marconi, Flinders Petrie), composers (Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns), and, of course, artists: the plates include works by Arthur Rackham, Charles Dana Gibson, Kay Nielsen, Maxfield Parrish, Edmund Dulac, and others. Two of these plates, by Rackham and Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow, have been mounted as doublures in the present copy. The luxury binding, though unsigned, was evidently the work of a very skilled artisan. The quality of the finishing is excellent, and the design is harmonious, though sufficiently restrained to be respectful of the subject matter.

Original broadside pictorial diploma (24.5x32cm.) printed lithograph on cream stock in red, gilt, and black, accomplished in manuscript and rubberstamp. Minor foxing else a fresh, Fine example. Exceedingly uncommon diploma awarded to a survivor of the Nazi prison camp at Fort Breendonk outside Antwerp. The camp generally held political prisoners, members of the Resistance, and Jews, who were almost all subsequently dispersed to the larger concentration camp across Eastern Europe. More than 3,000 prisoners passed through Breendonk, of whom approximately ten percent died or were executed within its walls, while half perished following deportation to other camps. The present certificate awarded to a member of the French resistance, a mechanic outside Saumur in the Maine-et-Loire department of Western France, his arrest part of a massive purge following the assassination of a Dr. Ritter, representative of Gauleiter Sauckel in France (see Colonel Remy, "La Résistance en Anjou, Touraine et Orléanais" (1975), Vol. 1, p. 103). The entire town of Saumur was later awarded the Croix de Guerre for its role in the resistance. Certificate margins adorned with poignant vignettes of camp life, men in striped uniforms awaiting execution, working in the mines, or caught in barbed wire fence. In the case of Huberdeau (his first name here spelled "Villiam"), he was awarded this diploma for "sa déportation dans le bagnes nazis" ("his deportation to the nazi camps"). Though no mention is explicitly made to Breendonk, it appears that the award was given to survivors of that camp specifically. We find no other examples in the trade, auction records, of separately catalogued in OCLC as of February, 2020.
