Copia autografata
1890 University of Pennsylvania Medical Diploma issued in Latin to Jared Spooner, beautifully engrossed manuscript on vellum-style paper with original red wafer seal and an extraordinary concentration of signatures from some of the most important physicians and medical educators of late 19th century Philadelphia medicine. Signed by an exceptional roster of University of Pennsylvania faculty including Joseph Leidy, the pioneering anatomist and paleontologist often regarded as the father of American vertebrate paleontology; the famed surgeon D. Hayes Agnew, immortalized in Thomas Eakins' celebrated painting *The Agnew Clinic*; William Pepper, influential Provost of the University of Pennsylvania and one of the leading figures in American medical education; James Tyson, prominent authority in internal medicine and pathology; Horatio C. Wood, pioneering neurologist and pharmacologist; Theophilus G. Wormley, internationally respected toxicologist and forensic chemist; William Goodell, noted gynecologist; Civil War surgeon and medical author John Ashhurst Jr.; renowned obstetrician Barton Cooke Hirst; and physiologist Edward Tyson Reichert. Large and visually impressive with elaborate engraved calligraphy throughout, broad manuscript signatures, and outstanding period presentation. A remarkable survival from the golden age of Philadelphia medicine combining autograph significance, academic history, and exceptional display appeal. Condition shows age toning, creasing, staining, edge wear, and mounting remnants consistent with age and storage but remains highly attractive and displayable overall. Shelved at Rockville Room C (MW shelf). 1412033. Special Collections - Upstairs. Signed.
