Neuware - The fractal dimension of the spatial distribution of galaxies can be characterized by variousstatistical and topological methods, such as the Two-point Correlation Function, Perimeter-Area, Box Counting, and the Gamma Function. Here we develop a new way to get fractal information, that is…the Metric Space Technique (MST). It allows multiple measures to be simultaneously applied for quantitative analysis of any type of structure distribution. All such distributions are considered to be elements of multi-parameter space, and the analysis is based on considering output functions, which characterize the distributions in multi-parameter space. We also develop both the Box Counting and Perimeter-Area method with the Hexagon Cell technique to calculate the fractal dimension of our samples. We compare results from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 with that of mock samples of galaxies from N-body simulation, nested-pairs simulations and random catalogs. By systematically studying hundreds of thousands of galaxies, we demonstrate that in the local universe there exists a fractal structure from MST. We also discuss the possible improvement for mock samples.

The analysis was performed on 2-D (a dozen slices of a volume of space containing many newly measured galaxies from the SDSS DR5 survey) and 3-D data. Using the MST, observational data was compared to galaxy samples taken from N-body simulations with current best estimates of cosmological parameters and from random catalogs. By using the maximal ranking method among MST output functions we also developed a way to quantify the overall similarity of the observed samples with the simulated samples. MST does uncover some new multi-scale morphological properties and appears to be a good tool to measure those properties by clearly distinguishing the samples. 120 pp. Englisch.

Many methods have been developed to get the fractal dimension. To supplement the widely used methods, here we generali…ze the Metric Space Technique (MST), a tool used to analyze and classify astrophysical maps and perform a multi-scale analysis and get the fractal dimension of the early and current universe. We consider a wide range of smoothing levels for multi-scale filtering. By varying the size of the smoothing function over a range of scales, exactly like the wavelet transform, it becomes possible for a complete multi-scale description of galaxy distributions to get the fractal dimension in metric space. We find that the early universe has a clear fractal structure (D~1.45) but the current universe is more homogeneous (D~1.15). We think that gravitation force decreases the fractal dimension of the universe when the universe evolves.
