This volume commences at page 269 as a continuation from content of that bound as Volume 2. This is the remainder of The Animal Kingdom, Section III, Zoology and ends at page 468. Section IV Ethnology (pp.469-500). This is followed by The Vegetable Kingdom: Section V, Botany including Economic Botany (pp.501-686), Section VI, Chrystallography (pp. 687-778), Section VII, Mineralogy (pp. 779-810), Section VIII, Geography (pp. 811-904), Section IX, Geology (pp. 905-966), Section X Applied Geology (pp. 967-1040). Lastly, Index to Volume II (pp. 1041-1092). This is the index to both this volume and also the previous one (not present) which is the whole of Division II The Natural Sciences. Bound in black half calf, spine with raised bands and leather labels, marbled page edges. This is a companion binding to Volume 1, listed separately. Contents are generally clean though some pages have some marks and there is some marginal damage to the frontispiece, creases to front end-papers. The binding is worn but firm. This is an eminently usable copy, although shows signs of age. Interesting insight into science in Victorian times. An exceptionally heavy volume and will require additional postage. 4to.

This volume covers Division I of the Sciences: Physics (Heat, Light, Electricity, Magnetism, Accoustics), Chemical Philosophy (both Inorganic and Organic Chemistry), Mathematics (all branches, with log and other tables), Mechanical Philosophy (Statics, Dynamics etc.), Applied Mechanics, Astronomy, Navigation etc. and Meteorology. Division II, the Natural Sciences were covered in subsequent volumes. This volume is complete in itself. Bound in black half calf, spine with raised bands and leather labels, marbled page edges. Contents are generally clean, one page has darkened and chipped edges through becoming loose, a few pages with some dirty marks, including the title page, damp mark to margin of frontispiece, end-papers creased at hinge and all over the rear end-paper with some tears, these have been reaffixed. The binding is worn but firm. An eminently usable copy, but shows signs of its age. This is an exceptionally heavy volume and will require additional postage. 4to.

There is some thumbing of the preliminary pages, and paraffin staining to the margins of the plates; overall, the contents are in good condition. Note that this is not a complete set; there would originally have been a third volume containing pp303-1092 of volume 2. This work was also issued in ten separate parts.

Three-Quarter Leather. Condizione: Good+. Brown leather over brown cloth with gilt cover design (globe) and gilt spine titles. The leather is in nice condition with some minor rubbing while the cloth appears a bit faded and is worn on bottom edges. The marbled endpapers are split at the hinge but covers are tight and secure by the binding cords. The paper is slightly toned and shows very minor scattered foxing. Many small illustrations of scientific instruments in the text and several full page steel engravings of prominent scientists of the period. Overall, an attractive set on the shelf andsturdy enough to enjoy reading. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall.
