After a degree in Law at Trinity College, Dublin, he was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple, London, but in 1934 was ordained as Deacon in Manchester. Two years later he returned to ireland as Curate-in-Charge of Corbally and then Rector of Ballymackey, both in Killaloe Diocese. In 1940 he was appointed Rector of St Michael's, Limerick city. Later Dean of Cashel and then Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe, he was also a painter, playwright and essayist.'.
