The exhibition on this occasion is devoted to Chinese and South-East Asian ceramics, mainly of the varieties used as trade wares in centuries past.Sir John Addis has honoured the society by writing the introduction to the Chinese ceramics section of the exhibition, which has been supplemented by essays on specific subjects by Dr Ip Yee, Dr Adrian Joseph, Dr Philip Wen-chee Mao and myself; and Roxanna M. Brown has generously consented to write the introduction to the South-East Asian wares section. Sir John's encouragement of the society from its beginnings has been most welcome, and we are particularly pleased that both he and Ms Brown should consent to write introductions in view of their well-known expertise in many of the types of ceramics included. Considerable advances have been made over the past ten years in our understanding of the types of wares exhibited as a result partly of excavations in many parts of South-East Asia and elsewhere notably of the shipwrecks off the coast of South Korea at Sinan and in the Gulf of Siam and partly from an intensive study of the wares themselves. Since the Manila Trade Pottery Seminar of 1968 numerous exhibitions of trade wares have been organized in many parts of the world, and a symposium was held recently at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during which provenances and dates were suggested for whole classes of early Sung ceramics, thus adding considerably to our knowledge of the wares of this early period. It is hoped that this exhibition will give new stimulus to interest in the subject and provide new collectors with a basic knowledge of the types of wares which can occasionally still be found today in the markets of South-East Asia. Their fondness for bamboo has frequently been expressed in poetry, painting, calligraphy, carving and many other art forms. In order to facilitate positive identification of artists among the spectrum of their names, and pseudonyms, and other assumed names, a special index has been compiled with direct reference to the biographical notes of each artist.
