Trade paperback. Condizione: Fine. First edition. Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. With dust jacket. 256 p. Contains: Line drawings, black & white. Temptations from Ancrene Wisse, 1. Audience: General/trade. The anonymous early thirteenth-century guide for anchoresses, the Ancrene Wisse, is one of the most important Middle English prose texts. Divided into eight parts, it provides instruction, in a lively and witty style, on avariety of matters, from prayer to everyday life, including diet, clothes, and possessions. Part IV, dealing with temptations and depicting as animals the Seven Deadly Sins, is especially vivid and entertaining; but, perhaps because of its great length, this section of Ancrene Wissehas previously been edited and annotated only in extracts. Here, for the first time, is an edited and annotated text, in two volumes. This, the first, consists of the textfrom Cambridge, Corpus Christi College MS 402., with a modern English translation on the facing page; there is also a scholarly introduction which covers many points of critical debate, including the textual history of AncreneWisse, the question of authorship, and its use by other writers. A second, forthcoming, volume will contain notes and a glossary. YOKO WADAis Professor of English at Kansai University, Osaka, Japan.

Ancrene Wisse introduced through a variety of cultural and critical approaches which establish the originality and interest of the treatise. The thirteenth-century Ancrene Wisse is a guide for female recluses. Addressed to three young sisters of gentle birth, it teaches what truly good anchoresses should and should not do, offering in its examples a glimpse of the real life women had in England in the middle ages. It is also important for its evidence for the continuation of the Anglo-Saxon tradition of prose writing, being produced in the West Midlands where Old English writing conventions continued to develop even after the Norman conquest. The Companion addresses the cultural and historical background, the affiliations of the versions, genre, authorship and language; the various approaches also includea feminist reading of the text.
