Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Ports of the Ancient Indian Ocean looks at the multisided role that 'ports' played in the exchange and transfer of knowledge between the 'Indian Ocean' and Mediterranean societies. Through the early Greek Periplus to minute descriptions by the Portuguese in the late sixteenth century or French archives of the colonial period, an accurate knowledge was gradually developed and transmitted on what is now called the Indian Ocean. The contributions focus on the nature of this knowledge, its history and status, using and combining new archaeological data and recent publications of textual material. They deal with material originating from the Red Sea to India, through Arabia and the Persian Gulf, shedding a new light on ancient ports and maritime contacts, with a special interest not only on India but on related areas as well, such as Sri Lanka and South-East Asia.

This book vividly depicts the humorous and sometimes absurd consequences when a clever but arrogant governor on an island decides to financially support only the most high-minded and brilliant scholars, leaving the menial labor for the rest of the populace to complete. Society on the island had already been problematic due to a skewed ratio of thinkers to non-thinkers, but the governor's decision exacerbated the labor shortage, resulting in a rapid decline in the quality of life. Desperate, the governor promises his daughter's hand in marriage to any man who can resolve the colony's mounting problems. This book humorously explores our society's overvaluing of high-minded thinking over practical skills, and the subsequent ramifications we fail to foresee, creating a humorous story with a thoughtful message. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

A Supplement to the Bollettino dei Monumenti, Musei e Gallerie Pontificie, available in English and dedicated to the collection of funerary portraits from the ancient city of Palmyra, an archaeological site of global importance. Conserved in the Vatican since 1999, until now the collection in its entirety has never been the object of a publication. This volume, accompanied by several colour images, is the result of long research conducted as part of an important international project conceived by the University of Aarhus and dedicated to Palmyrene funerary sculptures, the Palmyra Portraits Project. The data gathered enabled the funerary reliefs to be analysed from multiple points of view, and the customs and traditions of the ancient Syrian city to be reconstructed. The thirteen portraits, most of which form part of a donation by Federico Zeri, provide recurrent thematic and stylistic elements, observed here in depth and relocated within the field of traditional Roman portraiture, while highlighting interesting new aspects. The catalogue of works provides technical notes including the transcript and translation of the inscriptions, one hitherto unpublished, as well as a detailed description of each portrait.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. 2 vol., 1846 p., 22 b/w ill. + 1027 colour ill., 216 x 280 mm. When the Danish archaeologist Harald Ingholt conducted his ground-breaking excavations of Palmyra in the 1920s and 1930s, during which time he investigated several grave monuments and carried out the first observations of Palmyra's famous funerary portraits, he kept detailed diaries of his work. For a long time, these have been stored at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen together with the extensive Ingholt Archive, while further photographs and notes on Palmyrene sculpture have been kept with Ingholt's family in the United States. Now this material and Ingholt's diaries, written primarily in Danish, have for the first time been transcribed and translated into English with a full commentary written by Professor Rubina Raja, Dr Julia Steding, and Dr Jean-Baptiste Yon, in order to make these unique texts available to a wider public. The diaries contain a wealth of information on Palmyrene sculpture, grave complexes, and inscriptions from the city, as well as offering previously unpublished details into Ingholt's excavations, and his time in the field that will provide essential new insights for scholars working on Palmyra.

Roman Archaeology Objects and materials (antiquities & material culture) Archival Material BIO Olympia Bobou is an assistant professor at the Centre for Urban Network Evolutions, Aarhus University. Amy Miranda is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Urban Network Evolutions, Aarhus University. Rubina Raja is professor of Classical Archaeology and directs three projects on Palmyra: The Palmyra Portrait Project; Archive Archaeology: Preserving and Sharing Palmyra's Cultural Heritage through Harald Ingholt's Digital Archive; and Circular Economy and Urban Sustainability in Antiquity. She specialises in the archaeology of the Mediterranean and the Levant and has published widely on Palmyra and the region in general. Jean-Baptiste Yon is researcher at the CNRS, IFPO in Beirut, Lebanon and a world-leading expert on Palmyrene Aramaic and Palmyrene culture. SUMMARY For a period of over 50 years, from his first visit to Palmyra in the 1920s until the late 1970s, Danish archaeologist Harald Ingholt carefully collected and curated a detailed archive of Palmyrene sculpture, architecture, and epigraphy. Containing approximately 2000 images, each archive sheet contains handwritten annotations on Palmyrene funerary art, transcribes and translates inscriptions, includes detailed observations on object style and dating, and provides bibliographical information for each sculpture. As such, this archive is a treasure trove of information on Palmyrene sculpture, architecture, and epigraphy. Moreover, Ingholt's notes go beyond shedding light on the creation of these sculptures, and also provide rich information about their more recent histories: object biographies offer details on provenance, collection history, and excavation photography. In doing so, they offer unique insights into twentieth-century excavation, conservation, and collection practices. Since 1983, Ingholt's archive has been housed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark, and then, from 2012 onwards, the archive took digital shape within the framework of the Palmyra Portrait Project at Aarhus University. Now available in print for the first time, the Ingholt Archive is here presented in its entirety as a lavishly illustrated four-volume set. The authors have transcribed and commented upon each sheet in the archive, provided new translations of the inscriptions that accompany the sculptures, and compiled an updated bibliography for each item. This unique set is published together with a detailed introduction, thirteen concordances, and a bibliography, making it an invaluable resource for researchers in the field.Illustrations:8 b/w, 2111 col., 8 tables b/w.Pages 1954 Hardback Language : English text.
