Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. With deep roots in the Kimberley region, Olive Knight shares her story of growing up with the Gooniyandi and Walmatjarri peoples of north-western Australia. As the daughter of a half-caste father, she was nearly killed on the day of her birth, as was customary for half-blood children in her… community. Thankfully she was spared by an elder, and would follow her own path, full of hardship as she moved from mission to mission. She eventually found love and fulfilment, following her late husband Jim's passion for Indigenous rights, becoming a respected translator and community leader. After Jim's death, Olive's singing and songwriting opened unexpected worlds of opportunity. From early days in mission gospel choirs to finding her true voice in the country western, blues and rock n' roll music of the day, Olive's talent as a singer eventually led to collaborations with other artists and performers, many of whom sought her unique voice and ability to translate songs into her traditional language. In 2011, Olive was invited to sing as part of Hugh Jackman's Back on Broadway production. The memoir of Olive Knight (Kankawa Nagarra), a Wangkajungka woman who has led the most extraordinary life. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Good condition. Wear to book corners and edges. Marks on right foredge. Interior and binding are still very good. In 1964, a group of twenty Aboriginal women and children in the Western Desert made their first contact with European Australians - patrol officers from the Woomera Rocket R…ange, clearing an area into which rockets were to be fired. They had been pursued by the patrol officers for several weeks, running from this frightening new force in the desert. Yuwali, 17 at the time, remembers every detail of the drama - first seeing these 'devils' and their 'rocks that moved', escaping the strange intruders. Her sharp recollections are complemented in a three-part diary of the 'chase' by the colourful official reports of the patrol. These reflect a similar drama - arguments within Government about the treatment of desert inhabitants and public scepticism about the Government's intent. Yuwali's story also resonates in today's debate about the future of many Indigenous desert communities. Cleared Out combines three oral histories, detailed archival research, a wealth of photographs, and rare film footage from the patrol. One extraordinary episode reveals the multiple perspectives on the moment of contact. Line-drawn maps and black-and-white illustrations complement the text.
