Nach dem Krieg studierte er in Prag Geschichte und arbeitete ab 1960 am Militärhistorischen Institut. 1968 unterlag er im Gefolge der Niederschlagung des »Prager Frühlings« einem Berufsverbot. Erst nach 1989 konnte er seine Forschungen wieder unbehindert fortsetzen. Sein Lebensthema ist die Geschichte des KZ Dachau, weshalb er als einer der Überlebenden maßgeblich an der Neukonzeption der KZ-Gedenkstätte beteiligt war. .
