L'elemento che caratterizza principalmente la 'nuova San Pietro' è l'inedito simbolismo centrato sulla relazione che si instaura tra la cupola centrale, l'altare e la tomba del Santo. La connessione di questi tre elementi innalza l'autentico asse verticale di incontro tra natura e sopranatura. Un tale asse verticale incrocia quello orizzontale centrato sulla piazza antistante la basilica, circondata dal colonnato.
