GIOVANNI GABRIELE PERBOYRE nacque a Montgesty, vicino a Cahors, nella Francia meridionale, il 6 gennaio 1802 in una famiglia che donò alla Chiesa tre… missionari di san Vincenzo e due Figlie della Carità. In un simile ambiente respirò la fede, dei valori semplici e sani e il senso della vita come dono. Nell'adolescenza, Colui che " chiama per nome " sembrò ignorarlo. Si rivolse al fratello minore Luigi perché entrasse in seminario. A Giovanni Gabriele fu chiesto di accompagnare il fratello minore per qualche tempo, in attesa che si abituasse al clima dell'ambiente. Era dunque capitato per caso, e avrebbe dovuto uscirne presto. Ma il caso svelò agli occhi stupiti del giovane orizzonti inaspettati; fu così che in seminario trovò la sua strada. La Chiesa di Francia era allora appena uscita dall'esperienza della Rivoluzione francese con le vesti color porpora per il martirio di alcuni, ma con il dolore per l'apostasia di molti. Il panorama ai primi dell'800 era desolante: edifici distrutti, conventi saccheggiati, anime senza pastori. Non fu pertanto un caso che l'ideale sacerdotale apparisse al giovane non come una blanda sistemazione per la vita, ma come il destino degli eroi. I genitori, sorpresi, accettarono la scelta del figlio e lo accompagnarono con il loro incoraggiamento. Non a caso lo zio paterno Giacomo era stato missionario di S. Vincenzo. E questo spiega perché nel 1818 maturò nel giovane Giovanni Gabriele l'ideale missionario. Fu naturale per lui scegliere la Congregazione della Missione fondata da S. Vincenzo de Paoli nel 1625 per evangelizzare i poveri, formare il clero, ma soprattutto spingere gli stessi missionari alla santità. Giovanni Gabriele raggiunse la Cina nell'agosto del 1835. Allora in occidente si conosceva quasi nulla del Celeste Impero, e l'ignoranza era contraccambiata. I due mondi si sentivano attratti, ma il dialogo era difficile. Nei paesi europei non si parlava di una civiltà cinese, ma solo di superstizioni, di riti e usanze " ridicole ". I giudizi erano dunque pregiudizi. Non migliore era l'apprezzamento che la Cina aveva dell'Europa e del cristianesimo. Fra le due civiltà c'era un solco oscuro. Dopo 5 mesi era in grado di esprimersi, pur con qualche fatica, in un buon cinese, e subito si lanciò nel ministero, visitando le piccole comunità cristiane. Poi fu trasferito nell'Hubei, che fa parte della regione dei laghi formati dallo Yangtze Kiang (fiume azzurro). Improvvisamente nel 1839 due fatti, apparentemente senza collegamento, vennero a turbare l'orizzonte. Il primo è lo scoppio delle persecuzione, dopo che l'imperatore mancese Quinlong (17361795) aveva proscritto nel 1794 la religione cristiana. II secondo è lo scoppio della guerra cino-britannica, meglio conosciuta come " guerra dell'oppio " (1839-1842). La chiusura delle frontiere della Cina e la pretesa del governo cinese di esigere un atto di vassallaggio dagli ambasciatori stranieri aveva creato una situazione esplosiva. La scintilla venne dalla confisca di carichi di oppio stivati nel porto di Canton, a danno di mercanti per la maggior parte inglesi. La flotta britannica intervenne, e fu guerra. (.). Con sette banditi il missionario fu condotto su un'altura chiamata la " Montagna rossa ". Furono prima uccisi i banditi, e il Perboyre si raccolse in preghiera, fra la meraviglia dei presenti. Venuto il suo turno, i carnefici lo spogliarono della tunica purpurea e lo legarono a un palo a forma di croce. Gli passarono la corda al collo e lo strangolarono. Era l'ora sesta.
