A large German album with 34 albumen prints of Egypt. The Greek brothers G. and C. Zangaki were photographers who worked in Egypt in the second half of the 19th century. Due to increased tourism to this region after the opening of the Suez Canal, there was a large demand for souvenir photographs. Photographers like the Zangaki brothers, as well as Sebah & Joallier, catered to this. The Zangakis were among the first commercial photographers to produce large-scale images of Egypt. They travelled through the country with a portable darkroom to capture high-quality images of famous monuments and daily life, though the latter were usually posed. These images were then printed and sold to tourists, either separately or compiled into albums. According to John Hannavy, the brothers "produced some of the finest images of late Victorian Egypt". The 34 photographs include: the great pyramid, Cairo and the Nile, dervishes and other exotic looking locals, Egyptians standing on top of the sphinx, obeliscs, the Ramesseum, Karnak temple, the temple of Dendera, the Great Pyramid, Egyptians climbing the pyramid, the mosque and tomb of Muhammad Ali, Saqqara and many others. With two small library stamps on the first page, not affecting the photograph. The book has been rebacked. The left side of the front board has faded and the corners are worn. Minor browning around the edges of the leaves. Back flyleaf loose. The photos are crisp and clear and the book is otherwise in good condition.l Erdem, Views of Egypt by Georgios and Constantinos Zangaki: Examining a late nineteenth-century photographic album at the Art Gallery of Ontario (thesis), 2006; Hannavy, Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography, pp. 1036, 1093 & 1521. Original gold-stamped bubble-grained maroon cloth over boards, modern maroon cloth spine and leather corners. Gold stamped title and year on the front, white watered silk endpapers. With 34 large albumen prints mounted on heavy cardstock leaves. Most of the photographs are numbered and captioned in French in the negative and signed 'Zangaki'. The last one is signed Sebah & Joallier. The Zangaki prints measure 22.5 x 28.5 cm; the Sebah & Joallier one is 20.5 x 26.5 cm. Pages: [36] ll.

Remarkable collecton of photographs about Egypt, and in particular about the Egyptian oil industry. The first 17 photographs in the album date from the 1870s and 1880s, and were made by the famous Zangaki brothers, who were among the first commercial photograhers working in Egypt. The beautiful prints in the album show views of Caïro, pyramids, and locals, which are the type of scenes the Zangaki's specialised in. The remaining photographs date from the 1910s and offer a unique view of the very beginnings of the Egyptian oil industry. They document the building of an oil refinery and storage, presumably near Ras Gemsah, where Egypt first began drilling for oil. An especially notable addition to the collection are the two folding panorama photographs, which give a good sense of the scale of these building projects. As we have not been able to find these photographs anywhere else, they may have been privately commisioned by the Egyptian oil industry and only given to those involved in it.The Anglo-Egyptian Oilfields Limited registered in London on 6 July 1911. The company was a joint operation of Royal Dutch Shell and British Petroleum with the objective of receiving concessions, developing, drilling, purifying, supplying, reserving, distributing and handling petroleum products.Ras Gemsah became a very important source of oil, and in 1911, the first oil refinery was established there, which is what the present photographs show. The refinery's first operations commenced in 1912 and it was considered the only origin for oil production for quite some time. On one of the photographs, the English, Egyptian and Dutch flags can be seen side by side. Since the album was bound by R. W. Rinck of the Hof- en Nederlandsche albumfabriek en hofboekbinderij, which was a prestigious bindery at the time, it may have been meant for an important Shell employee involved in the Ras Gemsah project. With the label of the bookbinder (R.W. Rinck, Den Haag) at the foot of the front pastedown. The corners and edges of the boards are somewhat scuffed. The edges of the leaves are discoloured, without affecting the photographs. Otherwise in good condition. Contemporary embossed brown cloth (made to imitate reptile skin), with the title blind-tooled on the front board, decorative paper endpapers. With 83 albumen prints, of which 2 folding panorama photographs, 17 signed and numbered in the negative by the Zangaki brothers, and 66 larger prints of the oil industry. Pages: [42], [8 blank] ll.

Interesting photo album, probably compiled as a souvenir of a journey through the Holy Land, Egypt, Athens and Venice in the 1890s. Complete souvenir albums were sold by photographer's studios and dealers alike. However, the fact that the current album has several blank pages at the end, lacks a binding title and contains photographs showing several different countries, suggests that it was compiled by an individual traveller. Among the photographs of Athens, is an image of the statue of Themis, excavated in 1890 in Rhamnous and subsequently transported to Athens. The inclusion of this photograph suggests the album was compiled in or soon after 1890.The largest part of the album contains photographs of Egypt and Jerusalem. After a view with numerous watermelons at the market of Jaffa, it shows views of Ramlah, Bethany (al-Azariya), Khan al-Ahmar ("scene of the 'good Samaritan' episode") and the convent Mar Saba. Before the views of Bethlehem on Christmas day, are two photographs showing local inhabitants: a single rider with his horse before the river Jordan and a Bedouin camp near Jericho. All the major sites of Jerusalem are present, including the Mount of Olives, Wailing Wall, Solomon's Stables and the Jaffa Gate with more watermelons. A misplaced image of the coppersmiths of Cairo appears before images of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The images of Egypt mostly show the river Nile and the Pyramids, but also a busy market in the garden of Gezireh, the interior of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and a mummy. Typical images of Athens and Venice follow, with the final image showing a gentleman and two ladies feeding the pigeons on the Piazza San Marco. With the captions of several of the photographs transcribed in pencil or ink. Binding worn at the extremities. Paperboard album leaves with a few spots and several tears, most of the header corners damaged and several repaired. Photographs in excellent condition, a few with some spots and light damage at the sides. Contemporary brown half morocco, buckram boards. Oblong album (41.5 x 31 cm) containing 62 albumen prints, mostly 23 x 28 cm, with 2 smaller prints of ca. 16 x 28 and 5 large prints of 35.5 x 27 cm. Most of the photographs are numbered and captioned on the negative in French, and sometimes also in English. Pages: [59], [11 blank] pp.

Condizione: Good. Albumen-Silver print. 22 x 28 cm. Mounted on card 31 x 38 cm. Titled, numbered 1134 and signed in the image and on the mount in ink From a collection of photographs of the Middle East by the Adelphoi Zangaki = Zangaki Brothers.Thebes (Ancient Greek: ?????, Th?bai), known to the ancient Egyptians as Waset, was an ancient Egyptian city located along the Nile about 800 kilometers (500 mi) south of the Mediterranean. Its ruins lie within the modern Egyptian city of LuxorLittle is known about the Zangaki brothers, except their initials, C. and G., and that they worked out of Port Said and Cairo from around the 1860s through to at least the 1890s.]Many of the Zangaki photographs are signed with a brother's initial and/or a place of business, e.g., "C. Zangaki" or "Zangaki, Cairo" or occasionally "A.Zangaki".Until relatively recently it was believed that "A.Zangaki" was a single photographer. However, with the discovery of a signboard with the name "Adelphoi Zangaki", it was recognised that these were brothers.Ibn al Haithan Many scholars also believe that their names were George and Constantinos (or Costas). Some scholars believe that they were born on the island of Milos, while others have suggested that they were Cypriot. However, no definitive evidence pertaining to their place and date of birth is extant. How they came to learn photography is also unclear. However, shortly after their arrival in Egypt they had become established photographers with a studios in Cairo and Port Said.By the 1850s, tourist travel to Egypt created strong demand for photographs as souvenirs. A small group of early photographers, mostly of French origin, made their way to Cairo and the Nile Valley to capitalise on this demand. These pioneering photographers included Félix Bonfils (1831-1885); Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884), brothers Henri and Emile Bechard (active 1860-1890); the British-Italian brothers Antonio Beato (c. 1832-1906) and Felice Beato (1832-1909) and Hippolyte Arnoux (active between 1860 and 1890).[6]Photographs taken by the Zangaki brothers are commonly found in tourists' albums assembled in the Middle East in the second half of the 19th-century. From their Port Said studio, they were ideally situated to sell to Europeans visiting Egypt as part of a Grand Tour The Zangaki brothers traveled along the Nile accompanied by a horse-drawn darkroom wagon to document the Egyptian scenery, architecture and events.

Titled and signed in the image and on the mount in ink From a collection of photographs of the Middle East by the Adelphoi Zangaki = Zangaki Brothers.Little is known about the Zangaki brothers, except their initials, C. and G., and that they worked out of Port Said and Cairo from around the 1860s through to at least the 1890s.]Many of the Zangaki photographs are signed with a brother's initial and/or a place of business, e.g., "C. Images included views of the pyramids, e.g., Cheops or the Sphinx and the cities, e.g., Suez or Alexandria, as well of Egyptians going about their daily lives, e.g., a teacher and pupils, men by the Nile, or women at home.

2 albumen photographic prints of a view of the Nile with pyramids in the background and the Al-Azhar mosque in Cairo by the Zangaki brothers ("Adelphoi Zangaki"), who were two photographers of Greek origin active in Egypt from ca. 1870 until the beginning of the 20th century. They can be grouped together with other commercial photographers who worked in Egypt during the second half of the 19th century. These photographers, such as Félix Bonfils, Gustave le Gray and others who were mostly of French origin, were able to capitalise on the rising demand for photographic prints as souvenirs. Photographers, like the Zangaki brothers, often sold the albumen prints from their studios located in cities like Port Said, Cairo and Suez, but produced the actual photographs using the collodion process in a portable darkroom - a cart or sometimes even a boat - in the field. The brothers were quite prolific, producing at least 1500 photographs of Egypt and other regions of the Middle East during the span of a few decades around the turn of the 20th century. Since these photographs were taken with the purpose of creating prints for tourists, the subjects are often "quintessentially Egyptian" and sights such as the pyramids along the Nile river are captured. However, they also provide a glimpse into Egyptian daily life or occasionally one can sneak a peek at one the photographers and their portable darkroom. Not much is known about the Zangaki brothers and until quite recently people thought that the photographic prints signed "Zangaki" were produced by one single person. With a tear in the lower margin, not affecting the photographs, some foxing, remnants of white tape to one of the side margins of the board, with a small blue ink mark below an inscription "Mosque of El Azhar." in the margin below the photograph of said mosque. Overall in good condition.l cf. Erdem, Views of Egypt by Georgios and Constantinos Zangaki [.] (2009); Hannavy, in: Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography, p. 1521; Perez, Focus east, p. 233. 2 albumen photographic prints mounted on one board, 1 on each side (approx. 22,5 x 28 cm).

None. Condizione: None. Seventy-five original albumen photos, including one large image ca. 26x36 cm (10x14 in), 57 photos from ca. 22,5x28,5 cm (8 ¾ x 11 ¼ in) to ca. 18x25 cm (7 ¼ x 9 ¾ in), 11 images from ca. 16x23 cm (6 ¼ x 9 in) to ca. 11x19,5 cm (4 ¼ x 7 ½ in), and six smaller photos ca. 5,5x9 cm (2 ¼ x 3 ½ in) or slightly smaller. Over fifty images with captions and/or numbers in negative; over forty with the photographers' credentials in negative; ca. twenty-five with period pencil captions on verso. Six images by Francis Frith mounted on period album leaves; all but one with his signatures in negative; four with later red pen captions on verso. Most photos slightly waved, minor creases or tears on extremities, several with remnants of old mounts on verso, one with two holes in the left upper corner, one with old repairs with tape on the margins, a few photos mildly faded, but overall a very good collection of interesting photos. Historically significant, extensive collection of seventy-five original albumen photos of Egypt and its people, taken by several prominent studios of the second half of the 19th century. The largest image is an early view of the Kiosk of Trajan (part of the Temple of Isis) on the island of Philae, looking north, with the Nile bank and a docked dahabiya on the right. Six early photos by Francis Frith (dating back to ca. 1857-1558), mounted on period album leaves, include three views of Cairo (a distant view of the Citadel and Muhammad Ali mosque taken from the Mokattam Hills, madrasa and mosque of Sultan Qaytbay, a street in the Old Cairo area), and three of the Near East - Baalbek temple complex (columns of the temple of Jupiter with the temple of Bacchus in the back), the north shore of the Dead Sea and Mount Horeb, Sinai. Over a dozen views of Cairo (including two early images by Wilhelm Hammerschidt) show the city with the Delta Barrage in the background, Citadel and Muhammad Ali mosque, Necropolis with the Citadel in the background, lion sculptures at the entrance to Qasr el Nil/El Gezira bridge, opening of the El-Gezira bridge for the water traffic, Gezira Palace, Ablution Fountain in the courtyard of Muhammad Ali mosque, interior of Sultan Barquq mosque, a street in old Cairo, garden in the courtyard of a hotel in Helwan, "village Com-el-Assuit," &c. Over a dozen views of Alexandria (mostly, by Luigi Fiorillo) show the city's harbour and port, general views, Pompey's Pillar, Cleopatra's Needle (moved to New York and installed in Central Park in 1881), the Hippodrome, abandoned palace of Said Pasha in the El Max neighbourhood, Muhammad Ali Square, Mahmudiyya Canal, and Ras El-Tin Palace. An early interesting photo depicts a street in Alexandria with trees on both sides and Pompey's Pillar in the background. Nine photos of the Pyramids of Giza include general and close-up views of the Pyramids and the Sphinx, featuring Arab villages, Nile channels, camel riders, a traveller in a horse-drawn cart, palm groves, Arab guides atop the Sphinx, &c. Fifteen views of the Suez Canal by Zangaki Brothers show Port Said (general views, Suez Canal Company's office, the Quay, the Lighthouse, Palais Hollandaise, Rue du Commerce, Eastern Exchange Hotel - including a rare photo when the terraces were not closed off with glass windows), Suez (new quay on reclaimed land/ "quai de terre plein", Port Tewfik), and several photos of steamers passing through the canal. There are also several portraits of Egyptians and Middle Eastern people ("Chech Arabe," a man wearing a turban, women wearing elaborate costumes, smoking "le nargile" (hookah), a boy with donkey, an adolescent girl, "Fille de Prince du Mt. Liban"), views of the fallen colossal statue of Ramses II near the ruins of Memphis in Bedrechen/Badrashim, an Arab village on the Nile, &c. Six smallest photos, evidently made to be sold as cartes-de-visite (but not yet mounted on card, which is a rare example), show the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Pyramid, Cairo Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, dredges working on the excavation of the Suez Canal, and two portraits of Egyptian women with closed faces. Overall, an interesting, extensive collection of early original studio albumen photos of Egypt and its people in the second half of the 19th century.

  • None. Condizione: None. Twenty-eight loose original photos (26 albumen and two gelatin silver; including two duplicates), all ca. 22x28 cm (8 ¾ x 11 in) or slightly smaller. All but one photo is captioned in negative, twenty-two are signed "Zangaki," two - "Peridis" and one - "Marquis & Fiorillo" in negative. Several photos slightly waved, several with minor creases or tears on extremities, two with small losses of corners, a few photos mildly faded, but overall a very good collection of interesting photos. Interesting collection of early original albumen and gelatin silver photographs of Egypt from the late 19th-early 20th century, taken by the prominent local studios of Zangaki Brothers, Pappa Peridis, and Luigi Fiorillo. Twenty-two photos by the studio of Zangaki Brothers show Cairo (Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, Citadel and nearby Arab village, the Nile at Bulaq, a street view), Aswan (the Nile and railway tracks with various machinery), Pyramids of Giza (general views with Mena House hotel, the Nile and palm groves or a small dam, a close-up view of the Great Pyramid), Philae Temple (general views taken from the north, Temple of Hathor), Karnak Temple (Great Hypostyle Hall), the First Cataract at Aswan, three views of the "Olga" dahabiya boat on the Nile (Swedish flag is visible, two locations are captioned - the Elephantine Island and Aswan), &c. Two images by the Greek photographer Pappa Peridis depict the panoramic view of Cairo and the alley of destroyed sphinxes leading to the Pylon of Ptolemy III at the Karnak Temple. Other photographs include two views of the Philae Island and Temple - before and after it was flooded by the construction of the Aswan Low Dam in 1902 (the second image by Marquis & Fiorillo shows the scale of inundation by the raised level of the Nile), Cataract Hotel in Aswan (built in 1899) and a scene of an official celebration in a town on the river bank - most likely, Aswan (with visible flags of Great Britain and the Sultanate of Egypt). "The Zangaki brothers were born on the island of Milos. It is not known where they learned photography but soon after their arrival in Egypt, they became established photographers. The Greek brothers' photographs are very commonly found in tourists' albums assembled in the Middle East in the latter part of the 19th century. From their Port Said studio, they were in an ideal position to sell to those on the Grand Tour" (Jacobson, K. Odalisques & Arabesques: Orientalist Photography, 1839-1925. London, 2007, p. 277). Luigi Fiorillo worked in Alexandria in the 1870s-1890s. Pappa Peridis was active in Port Said and Cairo in the 1880s-1900s, being apparently associated with the Zangaki Brothers.

  • None. Condizione: None. Folio album ca. 31,3x26,3 cm. 29 card stock leaves. With 30 albumen photographs from ca. 21,9x28 cm (8 ½ x 11 in) to ca. 10,6x16 cm (4 ¼ x 6 in), including one double-spread photo ca. 27,5x39 cm (10 ¾ x 15 in). Spine worn and rubbed, front board slightly loose, occasional browning throughout, but overall a very good album with strong, interesting photos. Historically interesting collection of thirty early large-size photos of mostly Egypt (at the time Ottoman Egypt), taken by the famous photographers Hippolyte Arnoux and Zangaki Brothers in the 1890s. The Zangaki Brothers (likely C. and G. Zangaki) were Greek photographers active in Ottoman Egypt from the 1860s to the 1890s. They specialized in images of ancient monuments and daily life for the tourist market and occasionally collaborated with the French photographer Hippolyte Arnoux in Port Said. Together with Arnoux, the brothers were among the earliest commercial photographers to produce large-scale images of late 19th-century Egypt. The album opens with three excellent photos of post-bombardment Alexandria, showing the general view of the city, the barracks of the South Staffordshire Regiment, the Mosque of El-Megrib, and the Grand Square. Twelve well-executed photographs of Cairo mostly portray panoramic views of the city, the Niles, and ancient cites (Cairo Citadel, Qasr El Nil bridge filled with locals, road to the Pyramids, the Sphynx, Arab cemetery). Especially interesting is a lively, candid urban scene, illustrating the annual Procession of the Holy Carpet. The photograph shows hundreds of locals in traditional attire lining the streets as a large ornate box with the carpet passes by. Another interesting double-spread group photo features officers from the former 80th Regiment of Foot (later the South Staffordshire Regiment), stationed in Cairo in 1895 to help maintain order. Photos of Myanmar include general view of Mandalay, Shwenandaw Monastery, and a full-length studio portrait of a Burmese girl in traditional costume. The collection also includes three excellent aerial views of Morocco, showing Tangier and its main street. The rest of the photographs primarily depict Gibraltar (bull fight at the newly-built La Línea de la Concepción Bullring), Naples (aerial views of the city, Grand Hotel, Caracciolo St.), and Pompeii (Ruins of Pompeii). As follows from the captions in negatives, most photos of Italy were taken by the pioneer Italian photographer Achille Mauri (ca. 1806-1895). Overall, historically interesting collection of early large-size photos of Egypt, Myanmar, Morocco, Gibraltar, and Italy taken by the pioneer photographs of the region.
