The jacket is chipped along the edges, where there is also minor loss, with further minor loss on the back of the jacket along the head.; the book suffers from very minor damp effected waving. The dampness has left minor staining along the tail on the inside of the cover, and small fragments along the tail of the front and back board. Throughout the book on either side of the hinge at the tail a minute section of the page has been damaged by the damp.The faults make the book sound horrific. It is in fact a very good copy with faults which are obviously there, but not aggressively so. The exception being the blobs of paper on the tail of boards.Howver not recommend for a perfectionist. Some wear on boards and edges, small stain at centre bottom of front cover (approx size of an Aust. 20 cent piece), hinge exposed at pages 16/17 (but firm). Some light foxing. A good copy. SCARCE. 2/18th Infantry battalion, which was raised in northern NSW and Sydney in 1940 as part of the 8th Division. It assumed garrision duties in Malaya in February 1941 and trained continuously for ten months, with an emphasis on jungle warfare. It had a total of nine days in its fighting history and during that brief period lost 225 men killed, with over 400 wounded. With the fall of Singapore it went into captivity, its men being split between camps in Singapore, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Japan, and on the Burma-Thai railway. Produced after the war, this issue of the magazine Men May Smoke, according to D T Okey, the president of the 2/18 Battalion Association, was to be regarded as the final chapters in the history of the battalion as well as a memorial to those who gave their lives in action in Malaya or as POWs.
