Questo "libro-biblioteca" scritto in mercantesca comprende, oltre a una pratica di mercatura, un centinaio di ricette (di vita quotidiana, mediche, magiche, metallurgiche e artistiche), problemi matematici e tavole di conto, descrizioni monetarie, ricordanze private, un itinerario transalpino, disegni di animali esotici e fantastici e qualche testo devozionale e letterario, tra cui spiccano opere di Dante e Petrarca. La collaborazione di specialisti di questi vari "saperi" ha consentito di commentare il testo nella sua molteplice dimensione, per gettare luce sul sincretismo della cultura medievale, in particolare nelle sue forme tecniche e popolari.
