L'hypothèse selon laquelle Le Caravage réalisait des "doubles", la qualité remarquable de la facture et le témoignage de Murtola, poète contemporain de l'artiste, ont fini par les convaincre de l'existence d'une autre version de l'oeuvre. Les radiographies et réflectographies, qui révèlent la genèse de l'oeuvre, emportent définitivement leur conviction et permettent même de conclure qu'il s'agit de la première version du sujet. L'enquête a été menée selon une double démarche, l'une classique, celle d'une recherche historique et stylistique, l'autre plus moderne, qui fait appel à la technique et débouche sur de nouvelles méthodes d'analyse. Le chef-d'oeuvre caravagesque devient l'objet privilégié d'une passionnante enquête où les techniques d'investigation sophistiquées étayent et intègrent l'étude d'archives et l'analyse stylistique du tableau, ouvrant ainsi de nouvelles voies d'exploration et amenant à renouveler notre regard sur l'oeuvre.
