Eppure, tra queste due personalità quanto mai antitetiche, si crea immediatamente, certo nutrita da stimoli intellettuali differenti, un'intesa positiva incondizionata, di cui è testimonianza emozionante questo carteggio, che copre gli anni, in tutti i sensi cruciali per i destini del mondo, compresi tra il 1931 e il 1936, e che prende le mosse dalla decisione di Strauss di accettare Zweig come librettista per una sua opera lirica (Die schweigsame Frau). Senza quell'impettita affettazione che ad esempio gravava spesso sul carteggio tra Strauss e il suo precedente librettista, Hofmannsthal, questo epistolario documenta un fiammeggiante confronto di idee svolto all'insegna della comune solidarietà a sottomettersi al sacro fuoco dell'arte, anche se a sancire l'incolmabile distanza tra Zweig e Strauss interverrà fatalmente l'onda montante di quel nazismo destinato a travolgere valori consolidati nelle coscienze umane, e in particolare nella fattispecie proprio il rapporto fra arte e politica.
