Aggiungi al carrelloHard Cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. London: Printed for W. Feales; R. Wellington; C. Corbett; J. Brindley; A. Bettesworth, and F. Clay, 1735, (84) pp; full brown calf with blind-tooled and gilt-ruled covers, and jansenist spine in six compartments; front cover detached and missing; spine dried, and possibly reattached with…white tape which extends onto the title page; lacking leaf A1, probably a blank; internally clean, bright and sound. John Banks (died 1706) was an English Restoration playwright. He wrote mainly historical dramas, and his works were twice suppressed for political reasons. Little is known of his early life, other than the fact that he studied law. His first play, The Rival Kings, was staged in 1677, and he continued writing for the theater for the next ten years. However, two plays he wrote in the mid-eighties, The Innocent Usurper (based on the life of Lady Jane Grey), and The Island Queens, or the Death of Mary Queen of Scotland, were deemed too political, and his plays were banned. No other play of his was produced until 1692, when Vertue Rewarded, based on the life of Anne Boleyn, proved quite popular. However, when he tried to follow up this success with a second attempt to stage the Innocent Usurper, his plays were again banned, Cyrus the Great was the last play he wrote. Unusual for his time, Banks wrote his plays in blank verse, rather than the rhymed couplets favored by Dryden and other Restoration playwrights. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. The Works of Alexander Pope, Esq. In Nine Volumes Complete — 1766 — Complete 9-Volume Large Octavo Set — 24 Engravings Very Good antiquarian condition. Complete nine-volume set in handsome contemporary full calf bindings with gilt-ruled boards, raised bands, red leather spine labels, gilt titles… and decorative gilt devices. All 24 engraved plates are present. Bindings remain remarkably attractive and sound for a set published in 1766, showing expected age-related rubbing, scuffing, edge/corner wear and some variation in color. Gilt remains quite attractive. Interiors are generally clean and well preserved, with occasional age toning, spotting/foxing and other minor signs of age. Pages have the characteristic texture and appearance of 18th-century laid paper. (See photos) Each volume contains an older "PRIVATE LIBRARY" bookplate/label on the front pastedown; a previous owner's name on these labels has been obscured in black marker. Earlier ownership inscription dated September 18, 1873 appears in at least one volume. These ownership marks are unattractive but confined to the preliminary/pastedown areas and do not detract significantly from the text or the handsome appearance of the set on the shelf. The Works of Alexander Pope, Esq., In Nine Volumes, Complete, London, 1766. Printed for A. Millar, J. and R. Tonson, C. Bathurst, H. Woodfall, R. Baldwin, W. Johnston, B. Law, T. Longman, T. Caslon, Johnson and Davenport, and M. Richardson. Complete in all nine volumes with all 24 engraved plates. A very attractive surviving 18th-century set in full calf. (BR) Shelf 360.

Roberts' concluding section illustrated with plates & cuts. 8vo. 9-1/4" x 5-7/8" A quite informative journal for those interested in the history of dentistry in the United States. In this issue, the co…ntents include: "Twenty Five Days in the Sanitary Commission", "The Deleterious Effects of Vulcanite Rubber upon the Human System", "The Best Material for Artificial Dentures", "Dental Depots and their Uses", "Ancient Cures for the Toothache", "Deaths from Chloroform", &c., &c. Listings on OCLC suggest this a relatively short-lived journal, Vols. 1-5; July 1858 - May 1864, initially published quarterly going to biannually in 1862, with only one library reporting actual physical copies held. Issues of this journal are quite uncommon in the trade, and at the time of cataloguing, we find no others offered for sale. General wear, soiling & age-toning. Stamped 'Sample' at top of front wrapper. Very Good. Original publisher's printed buff paper wrappers. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve.

Aggiungi al carrello8vo, pp. [vi], 578; with an engraved frontispiece; in contemporary speckled calf, gilt, spine gilt (a little rubbed, joints slightly cracked, lacks label). First edition: a substantial biography, with much new information, written at the suggestion of Warburton, to whose collection of Pope's manuscripts Ruffhead was given access…. Warburton read the proofs of this book, and made corrections. Owen Ruffhead (ca. 1723-1769) grew up in London, where his father was a baker; the proceeds of a winning lottery ticket were used to give him a good education, and he became a lawyer. His venture into literary biography had a mixed reception; Samuel Johnson famously remarked that Ruffhead 'knew nothing of Pope and nothing of poetry'. Despite such opinions, the syndicate of booksellers who published this biography quickly reprinted it in quarto to accompany a new four-volume collected edition of Pope's works. The frontispiece depicts a commemorative monument erected by Warburton in 1761.
