This book explores how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly known as the Mormon church) was introduced to the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland in the nineteenth century. The internal workings of the movement and the reactions of society are both part of the analysis. The Mormons are discussed in numerous books of the time and are mentioned over 3,000 times in contemporary newspapers. Most of the publicity was derived from foreign sources and featured themes such as fraud, deception, and theocracy in explaining the movement. The resulting image, along with the lack of religious freedom, contributed to a high level of resistance by civil authorities and Lutheran clergy. Nevertheless, twenty-five Mormon missionaries worked in Finland between 1875 and 1900 and converted at least 78 persons, mostly among the Swedish-speaking minority population. The work was led from Sweden, with no stable church organization emerging among the geographically scattered pockets of converts. Mormonism's presence was thus characterized by private or small-group religiosity.…

Marketing Culture of Finnish Research Libraries. An Analysis of Marketing Attitude, Knowledge and Behaviour. Why are some libraries more market oriented than others? The dissertation answers this question by examining the pertinent issues underlying the marketing culture of Finnish research libraries and the library management's awareness of modern marketing theories and practices. The directors and consumers of 33 academic and special libraries participated as respondents in this study. The dissertation shows that a genuine marketing culture of a library represents a synthesis of specific marketing attitudes, knowledge and of certain practices which lead to superior service performance. Three kinds of marketing cultures were found: the strong- the high fliers; the medium- the brisk runners; and the weak- the slow walkers. How was it possible in the midst of a Latin American macho culture and after having been influenced by the theologically conservative, North American mission work? This research examines the kinds of internal and external factors which led women to leadership and ministry, and the context in which this development occurred. The roles of women have been scrutinised during several time periods. During 1952-1974 the focus was on women as missionary wives and fundadoras (founding mothers). Women's roles as laywomen grew in 1975-1985. After the outburst of the civil war in 1980, women advanced to lay leaders. The ministry was opened for women and the first deacon pastors were installed in 1986 and the first presbyter pastors were ordained in 1994. In 2009, more women than ever were working in different levels - from laywomen to leaders - in the Lutheran Church of El Salvador. The research shows that the reasons for the development and changes concerning women's positions and roles lie in the impact of significant individuals, liberation theology, the feminist and women's movement, civil war and the theology of life. **** Little wear to the covers.
