Slovakia by David Breeze, Sonja Jilek, Andreas Thiel Language: English. German. Slovak Summary: The book shows that although Slovakia lay outside the formal borders of the Roman Empire, it was closely connected to it through the Danube frontier (limes), one of Rome's most important defensive and economic boundaries. Roman frontiers were not rigid borders. In the Slovak region, they created a zone of military control, trade, and cultural exchange, demonstrating how Rome influenced and was influenced by neighbouring societies beyond its formal limits. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Digging Lincoln is a uniquely personal account of how a record of the city's rich archaeology was recorded from the time of the early antiquaries through to the commercially funded professional teams of today, by someone who was closely involved in a senior capacity for over half a century. The author recounts his background and initiation into archaeology, and the various arrangements under which an archaeological team for the city of Lincoln operated over the next few decades. It was both an exhilarating time and full of important discoveries, but also at times a struggle to survive in the face of other forces. Over that long period, appreciation of the importance of Lincoln's archaeological story and its public presentation have grown remarkably, such that it has now become a major heritage destination. A uniquely personal account of how a record of the city of Lincoln's rich archaeology was recorded from the time of the early antiquaries through to the commercially funded professional teams of today, by someone who was closely involved in a senior capacity for over half a century. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This study focuses mainly on the archaeological aspects of monasteries in the northern Judaean Shephelah and the western Samaria Hills during the Byzantine period. Many Christian sites have been uncovered in these two regions in the past years during salvage excavations and routine monitoring and inspection activities conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority. Some of these have not been systematically investigated and are presented here for the first time. In addition, all the locations where Christian archaeological remains and finds have been brought to light in these two geographic regions during the study period are presented. An effort has been made to draw a distinction between the different sites in terms of their type and function in order to determine whether they were villages, farmsteads, estates, monasteries, or some other type of settlement. The book examines the monasteries, the date of their foundation, the reasons for their establishment, and their interactions with the settlements in their broader area, with holy sites, pilgrimage sites, and pilgrim routes. In addition, the study proposes criteria according to which the different types of monasteries can be classified. This study examines Byzantine-period monasteries in the northern Judaean Shephelah and western Samaria Hills. It presents newly uncovered Christian sites, distinguishes site types, and explores monastery foundations, interactions with nearby settlements, and classification criteria. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In 2013, during the excavation of the archaeological site of Petermonostora (Hungary), two exceptionally large enamel plaques were discovered. The reliquary they belonged to was made by a Mosan artist, possibly in the Meuse Valley, a major intellectual and artistic centre of the period. The artwork's remains constitute one of the greatest discoveries in medieval Hungarian archaeology. Even though the site was completely destroyed by the Mongols in 1241, its remains, and especially artefacts like the reliquary, create a unique image of a large, thriving settlement, home to a Latin Christian masterpiece. Given the destruction of sources and artworks in the region, Petermonostora offers a rare opportunity to examine artistic, cultural, and historical aspects of high medieval East-Central Europe. In 2013, two large enamel plaques from a Mosan reliquary were found at Petermonostora, Hungary. Despite the site's destruction by Mongols in 1241, these remains highlight a thriving medieval settlement and offer insights into high medieval East-Central Europe's art, culture, and history. Spatial Analysis of Housing and Economic Complexes in the Upper Palaeolithic of Transbaikal (Southern Siberia) provides a brief overview of the history in the development of methods of spatial analysis in Russian archaeology in the context of studies of Palaeolithic dwellings. The results of an analysis of the spatial organisation of the Upper Palaeolithic complexes in Transbaikal region are presented in detail. The concept of contextual analysis is introduced as applied to the archaeology of ancient settlements. The planigraphy of housing and economic structures and, in general, the cultural horizons of the multi-layered Studenoe 2 site are examined in detail. An ethnographic block is presented separately, characterising the details of the frame dwellings of the northern peoples based on the rich photographic collection of the Russian Ethnographic Museum. This book is for archaeologists, historians, and Quaternary geologists, including undergraduate and graduate students, and academics. This book reviews the history of spatial analysis methods in Russian archaeology, focusing on Upper Palaeolithic complexes in Transbaikal. It introduces contextual analysis, examines the Studenoe 2 site, and includes an ethnographic section on northern frame dwellings. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The earliest contacts between the Aegean and the Indus were once thought to begin in the sixth century BCE, and yet there is now growing evidence of much earlier, indirect connections that extend into the third and fourth millennia BCE. There and Back Again evaluates the evidence for such contacts, particularly commodities such as tin and lapis lazuli, and discusses recently discovered objects, new methods of materials analysis techniques and topics, as well as iconographic investigation. Such studies clearly indicate the presence of indirect, or 'trickle down' contacts, where Mesopotamia functions as an intermediary between Africa and Europe in the west and Asia. In such a system, objects, iconography, and culture accumulate material and social value as they were exchanged through Mesopotamia and the Near East, to the Aegean and beyond. From the Early through Late Bronze Age, the Indus (and more broadly South Asia) remained critical to western regions for valuable, indispensable commodities destined for elites from Mesopotamia and other regions to the west. The volume's case studies are complex and multifaceted, including but not limited to linguistics, iconography, paleobotany, archaeology, ancient disease and medicine, as well as scientific, materials, and technological analysis. As such, this collection of 11 papers constitutes the first of a series that seek to address a lingering lacuna in prehistoric studies: multi-disciplinary case-studies of Afro-Eurasian exchange. This book evaluates the evidence for indirect connections between the Aegean and the Indus extending back to the third and fourth millennia BCE, particularly commodities such as tin and lapis lazuli, and discusses recently discovered objects, new methods of materials analysis techniques and topics, as well as iconographic investigati Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Swash Channel Wreck is an account of the discovery, excavation and analysis of an early 17th-century Dutch shipwreck. The wreck is most likely the Dutch West Indiaman Fame of Hoorn, lost in the Swash Channel in the approaches to Poole Harbour in February 1631. The site was initially found during dredging operations in the channel in 1990. In 2006, it was re-discovered by Wessex Archaeology, and Poole Harbour Commissioners partnered with Bournemouth University to undertake the monitoring and recording of the site. The remains are of a large c. 40m structure consisting of the port side of the ship from the turn of the bilge to the top of the upperworks, with associated wreckage which includes the ship's rudder, a multitude of rigging items, and a small collection of finds that consist mainly of domestic and provisioning items and the ship's armament. By 2009, it was clear that the site was rapidly eroding and English Heritage commissioned Bournemouth University to conduct one of the largest underwater excavations in the UK since the excavation of the Mary Rose in the 1980s. This occurred between 2010 and 2013 and involved the excavation and recording of the first 18m of the bow and the last 12m of the stern, leaving the 12m midship section unexcavated. In addition, a large section of the upperworks and the first 6m of the bow were deemed to be too exposed to protect in situ and therefore were raised and recorded in high detail between 2014 and 2015. The wreck proved to be the largest survival of the hull of any 17th-century ship in UK waters and one of the most complete 17th-century Dutch shipwrecks outside of the Baltic. The ship's construction and material culture confirm its origin as a Dutch vessel lost in the early part of the 17th century. The hull has immediate parallels with the wreck of the Swedish warship Vasa, lost in Sweden in 1628, and the Dutch East Indiaman Batavia, lost in Western Australia in 1629, and exhibits characteristics of both. The circumstances of the Swash wreck provided the opportunity to dismantle the structure and study in greater detail the timbers from which it was constructed. Contemporary clearance work and probably salvage meant that with the site did not yield a large number of finds but those that remained provide an insight into life on board, the makeup of the crew, and the ship's armament, as well as allowing the reconstruction of sections of the ship's rigging. This volume details the discovery, excavation, and analysis of a 17th-century Dutch shipwreck, likely the Fame of Hoorn. Found in 1990 and re-discovered in 2006, it underwent extensive excavation. It is one of the most complete shipwrecks of its kind outside the Baltic, offering insights into its construction and life on board. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A Mosaic of Recollections is the autobiography of David S. Neal, whose name has become synonymous with the study and illustration of Roman mosaics in Britain. It tells the story of a working-class boy, born into the travails of war-torn London, and his evacuation to South Wales to live with a mining community. The return to London in time to celebrate VE-Day remains a vivid memory. After moving to Hemel Hempstead New Town he became fascinated with the museums at St Albans and spent many hours watching excavations on Roman Verulamium before being invited to help. Studying graphic design at Watford School of Art developed his talents, which he was able to combine with his activities on the excavations as he began to record the mosaic pavements then being exposed. Work as a graphic designer with the Gas Board was not compelling, and he was fortunate to secure employment as an archaeological illustrator with the government's Ancient Monuments Inspectorate, where he met a wide range of unusual personalities. Tea-breaks were an education, as were lectures he was invited to attend at the Society of Antiquaries of London. Soon Neal became the manager of the archaeological drawing office, responsible for a team of illustrators recording a wide range of artefacts from excavations sponsored by the department. His work became renowned in the profession and, increasingly, he was invited to help on excavations in England and abroad. At the age of 23 he directed his own excavations on the Roman villa in Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempstead, which led to the publication of a monograph. With his growing interest and expertise, he was frequently invited to record Roman mosaics, often at a moment's notice, and was able to share the excitement of discovery of many of them. After 15 years he became a full-time archaeologist and excavated a variety of sites of all periods culminating on the extensive excavations of a Roman settlement at Stanwick, Northamptonshire. Early retirement allowed the time to concentrate, with a colleague, on the publication of the corpus of Roman Mosaics of Britain and, later, to record the medieval mosaics at Westminster Abbey and Canterbury. David S. Neal's autobiography chronicles his journey from a working-class boy in war-torn London to a renowned expert in Roman mosaics. His career spans from graphic design to archaeological illustration, leading excavations, and publishing significant works on Roman and medieval mosaics. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Life and Death in Roman Carlisle makes an important contribution to the study of burials and identity in the region of Hadrian's Wall. The book presents the results of excavations beneath Cumbria House, a new municipal building on Botchergate in the city centre. In Roman times this was the location of part of a roadside cremation cemetery associated with a fort established by the Roman army in AD 73. Those buried in this part of the cemetery died in the years just prior to and during the building of Hadrian's Wall, when Luguvalium was emerging as the most important Roman military base and largest urban centre in northwest Britain. As a result of this swift rise in profile, the early settlement-edge funerary enclosures quickly went out of use, being swallowed up and overbuilt by the expanding extramural settlement. Early Roman Carlisle would have boasted a vibrant multicultural population, and this is reflected in its burial evidence. Among the remains of some twenty cremation burials excavated at Cumbria House are the two most richly furnished examples from northern Britain. While the large assemblages of ceramic grave goods are unlike those of any other burials in the military north, close parallels are known from the France/Belgium border, in the former territory of the Nervii. The Nervians were described by Julius Caesar as having the fiercest fighters of all the Gallic tribes and this area was a major source of recruitment for the Roman army. Most of the pottery vessels placed in the graves were produced locally, probably at kilns within Roman Carlisle, and thus must have been made to order by those familiar with both the burial rites and the ceramic repertoire of the Nervian region. The presence of a community of Nervians living in Luguvalium in the early second century is a new discovery but fits well with previous arguments made about the possible replacement of the Ala Gallorum Sebosiana with another unit from Gallia Belgica when the fort at Luguvalium was completely rebuilt around AD 105. Meticulously referencing the relevant literature from Roman Britain and the Continent, the authors explore the significance of the new data for our understanding of the make-up of Roman Carlisle's population and the identity of its various garrisons. Finds from a Roman cremation cemetery in Carlisle offer an important study of burials and identity in the region. Excavated graves, including rare richly furnished burials, reveal cultural ties to the Nervii of Gallia Belgica and suggest a Nervian presence in early Roman Carlisle linked to military recruitment and local pottery Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

In the 25 years since the Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project (SHARP) began fieldwork in north-west Norfolk, Sedgeford has emerged as a major site for investigating the agricultural revolution of 'the long 8th century'. The period between c. AD 650 and 850 saw the consolidation of kingdoms, the rise of the Church, the creation of great estates, the transformation of agriculture, and the development of emporia, craftwork, and long-distance trade in prestige goods. These proceedings present the results of a day conference held in 2020 which reviewed the results of 25 years' work at Sedgeford in the context of new discoveries and changing ideas about the Middle Anglo-Saxon period in Norfolk, England as a whole and the wider contemporary world. This volume brings together insights from a 2020 conference celebrating 25 years of archaeological work at Sedgeford. Exploring life in the 'long 8th century', it highlights new perspectives on agriculture, estate development, trade, and society in Middle Anglo-Saxon Norfolk and its wider European context. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The settlement of Port Louis is the most important archaeological and historical site in the Falkland Islands with a unique colonial history. For eighty years, from its foundation by the French aristocrat Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in 1764 until the capital was moved by the British to Stanley in 1844, Port Louis served successively as the principal settlement of the four occupying powers, France, Spain, United Provinces of the River Plate, and Britain. The settlement was virtually abandoned in 1844, leaving extensive earthworks and structural remains from all phases of occupation often in an excellent state of preservation. This monograph presents the detailed evidence from the first archaeological survey of this important site, mapping the remains by conventional surveying techniques, undertaken largely from 1994 to 1996. In 2023, new technology using drone photography and 3D photogrammetry was used to enhance the archaeological record. The monograph sets out the historical context for the foundation and development of the colonial settlement under successive administrations, integrating the rich cartographic and documentary record in European and South American archives to interpret the physical remains. Together, they show how the remote location, the influence of topography, the difficult climate and the overriding need for defence all contributed to the layout and character of the settlement, while the geopolitical manoeuvres of the European powers fractured the continuity of this remote establishment. Port Louis, a key archaeological site in the Falkland Islands, was the main settlement for four colonial powers from 1764 to 1844. Abandoned in 1844, it has well-preserved remains. Surveys from 1994-1996 and 2023 used advanced technology to map the site, revealing its historical and geopolitical significance. Three of the five sites are located close to the coast and two are located in an elevated inland ridge with sea views. All are complex monuments which reveal episodes of remodelling and reuse, stretching from the first half of the second millennium BC into the Iron Age, with one site producing evidence for activity in the Roman period. A notable feature of the investigated barrows is the range of practices associated with them. Interestingly, only one of the barrows seems to have had a primary function as a place of burial, with others containing only token amounts of human bone, or none at all. Despite being broadly comparable monuments with similar radiocarbon determinations, there are also major differences in both the form and intensity of activity between the barrows, and there are significant contrasts in practices associated with them. The volume presents the results from each of the excavated barrows. A final synthetic section then reviews some of the major themes which have emerged from the excavations. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Worked stones are one of the most commonly encountered materials in archaeological excavations and surveys. They can be either minerals or, if granular aggregates of one or more types of minerals, rocks. The correct identification of these stones is an important part of any archaeological study. This book provides archaeologists with a clear and comprehensive explanation of how to recognize the archaeologically important rocks and minerals. It does this using only their macroscopic properties, which are those that can be observed with the unaided eye or, at most, with a low-power magnifying glass. Such observations include both distinctive visual attributes and responses to inexpensive, simple-to-use tests. Determinative keys are also provided to guide the identification process. Recognition of the many stone varieties is made easier if there is a general understanding of their geological formation and so brief overviews are provided on the origins of minerals and rocks. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Who were the Dioskouroi? This study sets out to revisit the evidence and explore the Greeks' experience of the Spartan brothers Kastor and Polydeukes in image, myth and cult. Commonly equated with the Roman Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, first by Roman writers in antiquity and subsequently by their western successors, the Greek Dioskouroi are here examined as they were represented in the period before the Roman hegemony of Greece. The evidence is explored through a series of case studies, chosen to focus chiefly on the brothers' homelands in myth - Sparta, Messene and Argos in the Peloponnese. Also reviewed is their presence on Eastern Aegean shores, and on trading routes where Greeks and other mariners may have sought the protection of the Dioskouroi, above all Thera, Kyrene and Naukratis. Our journey of rediscovery also includes Delos, crossroads of cultures in antiquity. In the process, some fresh perspectives have emerged, not least that Kastor and Polydeukes may not always have been synonymous with the Dioskouroi and, when they were, that appellation may have carried a specific and votive meaning. This book re-examines the Greek Dioskouroi, Kastor and Polydeukes, exploring their roles in image, myth, and cult. Case studies focus on their homelands in myth - Sparta, Messene, and Argos - and areas where Greek mariners sought their protection. Findings suggest that, for the Greeks, the term 'Dioskouroi' may have held a specific v Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The North Pennines from Prehistory to Present is the first comprehensive survey of the archaeology of the region, from Mesolithic to modern times. Sometimes described as 'England's last wilderness', the area is a vast but relatively little-known swathe of the English northern uplands. It is a land of contrasts: lush green dales, high windswept moorland, purple with heather in late summer, turbulent rivers and dramatic crags. Traces of 10,000 years of human activity survive to be studied today, including flint scatters at Mesolithic campsites, earthworks of prehistoric and later settlements and field systems, and extensive remnants of the post-medieval 'miner-farmer' landscape. Aspects of the area's past have been studied over many decades. Recently, since 2010, much new knowledge has been generated through the work of Altogether Archaeology. Initially a North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) project, largely funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, this has subsequently developed into an independent charitable community group. The authors of this volume have been involved in its work from the outset. This wide-ranging overview weaves together the results of projects by Altogether Archaeology and others. Lavishly illustrated, it includes numerous newly processed lidar images, demonstrating the value of lidar imagery in archaeological survey. It should appeal to the general reader interested in the area, as well as to students and specialists. This was the first legionary store excavated to modern standards in the Roman Empire. The excavation exposed the building's main entranceway and two small adjoining rooms, as well as four squarer storerooms. The coins and pottery provide an excellent chronological sequence for the store, which was constructed around AD 90-110 and remained in use until the end of the 3rd century, after which it fell into a derelict state before being partially demolished and levelled by around 350. Debris from the building's collapse and demolition sealed the floors of two store rooms, one of which was littered with military finds, many of which survived in a very fragile condition. These included the highly fragmentary remains of a rare example of an elaborately decorated horse's headpiece, at least one set of dismantled lorica segmentata body armour, as well as another set of unusual scale armour. Two new buildings were constructed among the ruins of the old and partially demolished legionary store, including one 3 room cottage-like building. Radiocarbon dates demonstrate this building was constructed and in use between 430 and 600. This is the first new structure at a Roman site definitively dated to the post-Roman 5th and 6th centuries from Wales (and, arguably, from Britain), and it has an important story to tell about life in Isca after the ending of Britannia, c. 410. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The well-preserved marble theater that Balduin Saria uncovered in 1924 at Stobi was thought for many years to be the only theater in the city. Following Saria's initial campaign, the remainder of the cavea, orchestra, and scene-building, but not the parodoi, were uncovered to the present ground level by Sarzo Sarzovski (c. 1965-1969). From 1970 to 1981, as a member of the joint Yugoslav and American excavation project directed by Djordje Mano-Zisi and James Wiseman, Elizabeth Gebhard opened a series of deep trenches to explore the history of activity in the building. Unexpectedly and near the end of the excavations, remains of an earlier scene-building were uncovered. They revealed a predecessor with a different plan and built at a lower elevation; much of it was destroyed or incorporated into the later building. The initial construction of the theater belongs to the end of the first or beginning of the second century AD; it was completed in the middle of the century. After what appears to have been a major earthquake, placed about 300 by associated deposits, the cavea and scene-building were repaired and remodeled, and the orchestra was enclosed as a permanent arena. This volume explores Stobi's marble theater, uncovered in 1924, revealing its construction in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD. Excavations uncovered an earlier, lower structure, later integrated. Post c. 300 AD, apparent earthquake damage led the cavea and scene-building to be repaired and the orchestra to be enclosed as a perma Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. …

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Argive Plain in the northeastern Peloponnese, Greece, was central to the Mycenaean culture during the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1600-1200 BCE). While known for its settlements and treasures, little is understood about its agricultural sustainability. This study examines Mycenaean farming in the Argive Plain and its societal implications, investigating if resource depletion contributed to the Bronze Age collapse. Using agricultural potential modelling, it reconstructs farming practices within the region's political hierarchy, assessing sustainability through food consumption, energy needs, and land usage. Results indicate sustainable agriculture despite challenges like drought. However, ruling elites' additional production needs may have strained resources. The thesis also addresses estimations of Neolithic and Bronze Age Aegean subsistence space, highlighting the overlooked impact of livestock on agricultural potential. By incorporating dairy and meat production, future models can better represent food production and environmental sustainability. This research enhances understanding of Mycenaean agricultural practices before the Bronze Age collapse, illustrating how elite formation likely influenced local communities and broader society. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This catalogue presents the first comprehensive study of the Egyptian collection at the Musee d'Histoire et d'Archeologie in Vannes, originally assembled by the Societe polymathique du Morbihan, a learned society founded in 1826. The collection, largely made up of donations from famous explorers and scholars of the 19th and 20th centuries, traces the development of one of the first public collections of Egyptian antiquities open to the public. One of the main contributors is the famous explorer Frederic Cailliaud. This catalogue meticulously reconstructs his original lots, as well as artefacts from other donors, revealing their historical significance. Notable items include 46 predynastic flint tools from Fayoum, donated by Walter Seton-Karr, a series of funerary objects such as linen strips used for the embalming of priests of Montu in Thebes, the painted and inscribed lid of a wooden anthropoid coffin of a priest from the Ptolemaic period in Akhmim, faience shabti figures from the Late Period, jewellery, amulets, a fragmentary papyrus in hieratic script, a mummified cat, two Ptolemaic royal coins and 25 Coptic textiles from Antinoe, donated by Emile Guimet. This scholarly work, enriched with detailed descriptions and high-quality images, provides new critical perspectives on these artefacts, many of which have never been published, constituting a valuable resource for Egyptologists, historians and museum curators. It makes a significant contribution to the study of small collections of antiquities in this remote region and is the first catalogue of Pharaonic artefacts from western Brittany. This catalogue studies the Egyptian collection at the Musee d'Histoire et d'Archeologie in Vannes, featuring artefacts donated by 19th- and 20th-century explorers. It includes Predynastic flints, funerary objects, jewellery, and more, offering new insights and serving as the first catalogue of Pharaonic artefacts in northwestern Fran Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. This volume primarily consists of a collection of papers presented at the conference 'Textiles and War in Europe and the Mediterranean from Prehistory to Late Antiquity', held in Bucharest in May 2023. Its main goal is to explore the opportunity to establish a new and well-defined direction of academic investigation: the autonomously conceived research of the textile items used or manipulated by prehistoric and ancient armed groups. The book revolves around two central issues. The first is outlining the main sources and methodologies with the potential to provide noteworthy results, starting by sketching a map of the current state of the research in the field. The second is topical and deals with highlighting a few relevant themes that could be tackled, such as particular studies on specific textile items used in the military field, the systems of production and acquisition of garments and other textile materials for the armies, the expression of military rank and status through textile items, the economic and cultural effects of military campaigns in the field of textiles acquisition and consumption. The 13 papers operate with a wide array of archaeological, iconographic and written sources to examine various aspects of the use of textiles and leather by armed individuals and armies in diverse regions of the prehistoric and ancient world, from western Iberia to northern Mesopotamia and from the bogs of northwestern Europe and the rugged mountains of the Balkan peninsula to the Arabian desert, preserving however as focal points Greece, Rome and the Italian peninsula. This volume explores the role of textiles and leather in warfare from prehistory to late antiquity, examining production, acquisition, symbolism, and practical use. Studies draw on archaeological, iconographic, and written evidence from Iberia to Mesopotamia, with a focus on Greece, Rome, and the Italian peninsula.
