Einband leicht berieben. - The opening lines of Holz's Deutsches Dichterjubiläum refer to the poet's twenty-fifth-anni-versary jubilee as a "German poet." In 1898-99 the first version of his Phantasus appeared (the last poems were added in 1926), and from this moment… on Lessing's dictum that genius makes its own rules, and does not have to submit to rules, became applicable to Holz. In the Phantasus he set out to present the dialectic of "I and the World," and this dialectic was to be from then on the "motor" of his poetry. In the Phantasus, however, Holz's ego becomes the dominant element. Motions and images are the forces that express the dialectic relationship of ego and universe. This is also the case with the Jubiläumsgedicht. This work, then, celebrates not only twenty-five years of poetic creativity, but, implicitly, also that moment when the first Phantasus poems appeared. Holz's avant-gardeism did break with all tradition; however, whether he effected, as he expected that he would, a Revolution der Lyrik is another question. The poet's messianic-revolutionary expectations regarding his "neue Wortkunst" are reflected in the Jubiläumsgedicht from its very beginning, where Holz designates the event as a German poet's jubilee.
