Original blue-green cloth, spines lettered direct in gilt. Somewhat soiled and marked, edges a little bumped, spines darkened, a little wear to extremities. Initials ?J.D.? to early leaves, traces of adhesive from labels to front boards now removed. A collection of writings by Karl Pearson (1857-1936), covering a wide range of subjects and including papers on statistics, biometrics, socialism, feminism and a lengthy discourse on German passion-plays, many rewritten for book publication or adapted from lectures. Having begun his career in the then-new field of mathematical statistics, Pearson became increasingly interesting in biometrics and eugenics. ?Several of Pearson's essays [.] published in his Chances of Death, and other Studies in Evolution (2 vols., 1897), show that he had already begun to explore scientific ideas that would become central components of his eugenic creed, such as Darwinism, the inheritance of physical and mental characteristics, and the differential fertility of fit and unfit stocks? A nice copy of a book we seldom see, the textblock is clean and fresh and sturdy, the binding strong, the cloth with a bit of mild wear to the tips and corners and few little blemishes or spots. Some splitting to the endpaper at the front hinge which is still strong an tight. Reasonably discrete ex-libris markings of the John Crerar Library, these include an engraved bookplate, small purple ink stamps on the rear of many of the plates which in no way effect the side to be viewed, same on the rear of the folding map, small numbers at the foot of the spine embossed in silver. A VERY EARLY WESTERN ACCOUNT OF THE EASTERN HIMALAYAS. White's memoir and travelogue of his time as a British political officer in the states of Sikhim and Bhutan. He provides extensive details on the region's geography, culture, and political landscape. The memoir includes his important early photographs of the area, including several monasteries, such as Talung and Gorina, and Paro Ta-Tshang. An accomplished photographer, White was the first Englishmen granted permission to photograph these monasteries. White was also present at the installment of Ugyen Wangchuck as the first king of Bhutan and represented the British Government at the enthronement ceremony. White developed a deep respect for King Ugyen Wangchuck, and wrote: "I have never met a native I liked and respected more than I do Sir Ugyen. He was upright, honest, open and straightforward.".

Original publisher's navy cloth, lettered in gilt. Heavily rubbed, corners bumped. Damp-staining to front endpapers, scattered spotting. Presented by the author to the publisher, inked inscription to half-title: 'Edwadr Arnold / Feb. 1922 From A. L. M.' The first edition of British publisher and mountaineer Arnold Louis Mumm's (1859-1927) account of his expedition to the Himalaya in 1905. As the author notes in his prefatory remarks: 'In 1905 Lord Curzon who was the Viceroy of India wrote a letter to Mr. Douglas Freshfield suggesting that it was time that the exploration of Mount Everest should be undertaken by a competent party under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club, and making a most generous offer of assistance on behalf of the Indian Government. Nothing came of this at the moment, and Lord Curzon left India soon afterwards, but the letter naturally made a considerable stir in mountaineering circles; in particular it attracted the attention of Major the Hon. C. G. Bruce, of the 5th Gurkha Rifles, and thereby brought about the journey which is described in the following pages.' Size: 8vo.
