This study is composed of five chapters seeks to analyse how different cities have been a source of inspiration, whether conscious…ly or not, for a variety of authors who have given them moulds of their own. In the first chapter, the author studies the relationship between the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz and his city, Cairo. This is in contrast to Tayeb Salih, featured in Chapter two who according to the study is attracted but repulsed by the city and longs for the pristine life of the desert. In Chapters three and four, an examination of the works of various authors, Tawfiq Yusuf Awwad, Etal Adnan, Mahmud Darwish amongst them, who describe the apocalyptic fires which burnt Beirut for 15 years (1975-1990) and the suffering and destruction that ensued. Beirut is redeemed through its poets, such as Nadia Tueni. Finally, chapter five examines how George Schehade creates a city of imagination, Paolo Scala, which offers an edenic life to her inhabitants. # 21157.

Band 33 - This study investigates the ethnic aspect of the Sokoto capital, in what is modern day Nigeria…, through the first period of consolidation in the light of the career of Abd as-Salam, a learned Haussaman who was at one time loyal follower of Utman dan Fodio who had established the Sokoto caliphate by revolting against the Haussa States. He then turned against his son and successor Muhammad Bello. The first part of the study describes the successful rebellion of Utman dan Fodio and the role of the Fulani people. The chief source of information about Abd as- Salam is a report written by Bello entitled Sard al Kalam Fima Gara Bainana Wa-Baina Abd as-Salam, which consists of the correspondence between the two and which is presented here. The book ends with Bello's narration of as-Salam's career, his rebellion and eventual death. This study reveals that the revolt was crushed by Muhammad Bello at a heavy price- the alienation of large segments of the Hausa population which brought with it a series of revolts that plagued the Sokoto Caliphate. #21161.

Its objects are the stories oublishged by Taymur from 1920 to 1934. As shown in the introduction, these works can be reasonably considered to mark the initial pahse of his career as narrator. The study explores them using two complementary approaches: a systematic analysis which includes the original texts as well as the revised versions published during the time under consideration in part one, and a chronological record in which articles devoted to one story each are arranged according to the dates of first publication in part two. #21149.
