Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. *** Gerhard Richter is arguably the most important German artist of the post-war period. He was known as a practitioner of the German variant of Pop art, "Capitalist Realism," in the sixties and seventies. But the artist has always straddled the concerns of both the Pop artists and the Minimalists. In recent years, some of his works have been totally abstract, deconstructing pictorial conventions, as in this commissioned work, "Eight Gray," a series of pieces utilizing mirrored surfaces. The installation is interpreted by the Marxist critic and art historian Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, who is the leading champion of Richter's work. A lavish publication. *** "Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin will present Gerhard Richter: Eight Gray, a new commission project consisting of eight monumental mirrored panels. One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Richter has become known for his manipulation of various pictorial conventions. His diverse production, which includes sculptural objects and paintings and ranges from landscapes to monochromes, is characterized as a whole by the artist's steadfast investigation of the nature of looking. Throughout his career he has experimented with the concept of the perceptual frame and, consequently, windows and mirrors; the commission for the Guggenheim grows out of a series of works Richter first conceived in the mid 1960s. The hazy reflections of the artist's series of enameled glass panels articulate the viewer's fleeting relationship to the real while referencing a long history of attempts to depict it on canvas and on film. Gerhard Richter's Eight Gray is the eighth commissioned work Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin." - Publisher. Size: 4to.

Softbound. In English. BW pictorial wraps, 60 pp., 29 images, color and bw. Jeff Wall: Exposure introduces four new large-scale black-and-white photographs by the Canadian artist Jeff Wall. Presented publicly for the first time in an accompanying special exhibition at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin, this new work is shown alo…ngside earlier pieces--both black-and-white photographs as well as transparencies mounted in light boxes--to create an ensemble that resonates formally and thematically. Wall has long been interested in the language of Realism, in the values and aesthetics of representing daily life. All of the pictures realistically portray desolate places and people in straitened circumstances typical of contemporary society. This focused catalogue, with essays by Guggenheim Museum Curator of Photography Jennifer Blessing and Katrin Blum, aptly demonstrates Wall's continuing interrogation of the history of photographic representation--here specifically the legacies of documentary photography and Neorealist film. (Publishing information as seen on Amazon). VG, slight indentation on lower cover.

Wraps, 170pp, B&W reproductions of exquisite portraits made with large format cameras, augmented with B&W photos and illus. Hir…oshi Sugimoto photographs wax figures of Henry VIII and his wives. These wax figures are based on portraits from the 16th century and when taking the picture Sugimoto attempts to recreate the lighting that would have been used by the painter. Focusing on Madame Tussaud's in London, its branch in Amsterdam and a wax museum in Ito, Japan, Sugimoto took three-quarter view photos, using 8-by-10-inch negatives, of the most realistic wax figures. They are typically taken against a black background. There is a fold-out of a recreation of the Last Supper. The text is entirely in German. (3.3 JM LVR 200/1 Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12". BASHKOFF, TRACEY, (organizer). . On the sublime: Mark Rothko, Yves Klein, James Turrell. Organized by Tracey Bashkoff. Berlin : New York: Deutsche Gu…ggenheim ; Guggenheim Museum Publications, 2001, 135pp., . Rothko, Mark, 1903-1970; Bashkoff, Tracey R.; Klein, Yves, 1928-1972; Turrell, James - Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, July 7-Oct. 7, 2001 - On the Sublime accompanied a small exhibition of minimalist works by Mark Rothko, Yves Klein and James Turrell. The exhibit included color-field paintings and light installations that are quietly captivating, and we tried to evoke the same spirit in this simple book. The cover is delicate and evanescent; pages are thick and sober; transparent tints separate chapters; and the typography is (we hope) both retiring and monumental. - CONTENTS: Rothko's sublimities / Robert Rosenblum -- Yves Klein and the double-edged sublime / Thomas McEvilley -- James Turrell and the nonvicarious sublime / Frances Richard. 9780892072477 ISBN 0892072474.
