1st edition. Fine copy in the original colour printed boards. Particularly and uncommonly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new. Physical description; 254 pages: illustrations (chiefly color); 30 cm. Notes; Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at Deitch Projects, New York, 3 May - 2 June 2007. Includes bibliographical references. Text in English and Italian. Summary; The Italian-born painter Francesco Clemente came to prominence in the mid-1970s when intensely subjective yet universal themes filtered into his skewed self-portraiture, witty wordplay and gestural figuration. This volume compiles a decade's worth of works on paper from those early days, many of which were inspired by Italy's political crisis at the time or fellow artists Alighiero Boetti and Luigi Ontani. The Italian artists of the 1970s were working in the context of the "terrorist generation." There was a crisis of capitalism and of Western societal values--both of which informed such major ideas in Clemente's early work as "fragmentation of self" and the "refutation of reason." Suddenly the body became a territory for artistic exploration; it became a border and led to the idea of travel. Here Clemente learned to trust geography over history, and his highly personal symbolism of the time bears proof of an itinerant life spent between homes in Madras (current-day Chennai, India), New York and Rome, with many trips to Dehli, Srinagar and various areas of Afghanistan mixed in.Published on the occasion of Clemente's recent exhibition at New York's Deitch Projects, this deluxe volume highlights the artist's concerns with process and concept--not technical perfection--and his obsession with paper's ephemeral vulnerability. Hints of Clemente's later forays into Surrealism and deep human psychology are also evident, and provide an essential view of the beginning of a masterful career. Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Gut. Unpaginated [20 p.], numerous ill. A very good and clean copy. - From the text by Sherilyn Shepperd: The Playful Past: Between Nursery Rhymes and Other Social Myths. The simplest memory game is the nursery rhyme. In the rhymes' structured form, the lines of prose offer an insight of the basic truths of human nature and humanity. The rhymes themselves are seemingly apparent but at its core they operate in a complex interspace of coded language. The child-like particularities of the formal aspects do not undermine the wisdom of its ageless teachings. As a past time for adolescence, amusement and play, the simplest verse provides a passage into the worlds of folk and myth. It is within this uncharted space where Japanese artist Koji Shimizu chose to locate his collaged sculptural installations. Exploring the locations of cultural identity and alienation, Shimizu presents a playful representation of these multiple histones. These mischievously entertaining drawings and sculptural objects present a faceted view of the worlds that it attempts to negotiate, closely operating like a nursery rhyme. Shimizu, unlike many members of his urban-bound generation, grew up outside the metropolis of Tokyo, Japan. Raised in a multi-generational household of farmers, Shimizu's grandparents played a pivotal role in forming the artist's perseption of events in the Second World War. Shimizu utilizes these detailed accounts and intertwines his own subjective history into the social and collective fabric. Hardcover. Condizione: VG-. A uniquely flawed copy of an exceptional catalogue of black and white patterns, the book having survived the 2019 fire at the Saint Mark's Place flat of the late poet and critic Peter Schjeldahl. The covers & edges are thus smoked and darkened while interior images remain unaffected. We've tested it and note that the soot can be easily erased but we've left it as is for any potential Auerbachian Scheldahlians out there to mend if they think that's heeded.
