Sehr guter Zustand / très bon état / very good condition - [ . ] Notwithstanding these cautionary signposts, Othoniel welcomed the challenge posed to him and has set his own course into the magnificent grounds of Versailles without much concern for dubious precedents. Simply put, like his musical counterparts, he is not a historicist but rather an artist wholly of the present. One who is undeterred by aesthetic Darwinism, according to which cultural survival and advancement depends upon de-eroticized formal nudism, or by moralizing politics, according to which individual delectation is a betrayal of progress for all. In sum a man unafraid of enjoying himself or of giving pleasure. To the surprise if not dismay of potential or actual detractors, Othoniels frame of reference thus encompasses everything from systems art and minimalism (his beadwork being a reprise of the modularity of and degrees of variation among similar forms rephrased by traditional crafts such as ceramics and glass blowing and casting), to Lucio Fontana, who exploited the prismatic effects of fragments of colored Venetian glass in many of his Concetto spaziale paintings, to Lucas Samaras, whose phantasmagoria of patterning, refraction, and pop-to-op bijouterie play fast and loose with the strict rules of gendered taste-and so much more. Accordingly, the canon defining Othoniels sensibility confounds the wise by amalgamating artistic tendencies and bodies of work that the defenders of orthodox modernism have long been at pains to keep separate from, if not at war with, one another. In the process he has elegantly queered the pitch of those advocates of straight-and-narrow no-frills art. The site specificity of Othoniels fountain project for the gardens of Versailles demands rigor of another sort. After all, Versailles is opulent and grand but its rococo caprice is not as extravagantly fanciful as that of Frederick the Great of Prussias otherwise comparable and approximately contemporaneous showcase residence, Sanssouci. Taking into account the alternately flat and swelling contours of land and the reflectivity of the existing pools, as well as the arcs that spouting water makes and the complex clusters of droplets that briefly amalgamate and even more briefly remain suspended in air as the stream breaks up and falls, while also taking cues from the precise cadences of Beauchamp-Feuillet dance notations, Othoniel devised a scheme in which chains of massive though light-absorbing, light-emitting, gold-flecked glass beads emerge from and resubmerge into the pools like a mythic sea monster in an old map. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 4to, illustrated boards, unpaginated, plates. A Near Fine copy of the first edition. Our price is premissed on an identification of a sketch at the front as Chang-Sup's own. Though unsigned it seems too comfortable and too possessive of the page to be another's work. Similarly, the bushy eyebrows and moustache added to the frontispiece portrait of the author seem a self-caricature. Extra postage may be asked to ship abroad.
