Clay, 1735, (84) pp; full brown calf with blind-tooled and gilt-ruled covers, and jansenist spine in six compartments; front cover detached and missing; spine dried, and possibly reattached with…white tape which extends onto the title page; lacking leaf A1, probably a blank; internally clean, bright and sound. John Banks (died 1706) was an English Restoration playwright. He wrote mainly historical dramas, and his works were twice suppressed for political reasons. Little is known of his early life, other than the fact that he studied law. His first play, The Rival Kings, was staged in 1677, and he continued writing for the theater for the next ten years. However, two plays he wrote in the mid-eighties, The Innocent Usurper (based on the life of Lady Jane Grey), and The Island Queens, or the Death of Mary Queen of Scotland, were deemed too political, and his plays were banned. No other play of his was produced until 1692, when Vertue Rewarded, based on the life of Anne Boleyn, proved quite popular. However, when he tried to follow up this success with a second attempt to stage the Innocent Usurper, his plays were again banned, Cyrus the Great was the last play he wrote. Unusual for his time, Banks wrote his plays in blank verse, rather than the rhymed couplets favored by Dryden and other Restoration playwrights. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. dust jacket not issued. Second Printing. A collection of forty sermons written by Dr. William Fleetwood from 1689 to 1722. Bound in full leather, cover is plain. Hubbed spine bears six raised bands, and a leather burgundy label stamped in gilt lettering. All edges sprinkled red. Attractive antiq…uarian bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. xii, 782pp., plus 2 pages of ads. Covers and spine are moderately rubbed. Mild discoloration occasionally throughout, but overall, leaves are bright white and clean. No writing within text body. A wonderfully preserved volume of writings and sermons. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "William Fleetwood, (1656-1723), was an English preacher, Bishop of St. Asaph and Bishop of Ely, remembered by economists and statisticians for constructing a price index in his Chronicon Preciosum of 1707. He received his education at Eton and at King's College, Cambridge. Fleetwood was regarded as the best preacher of his time. He was accurate in learning, and effective in delivery, and his character stood deservedly high in general estimation. In episcopal administration he far excelled most of his contemporaries. He was a zealous Hanoverian, and a favourite with Queen Anne in spite of his Whiggism." (Wikipedia). PLEASE NOTE: At over 8 lbs. with packaging materials, an additional shipping charge will likely apply, and will be requested after purchase. This book will arrive with "signature required" upon delivery. Full refund if not satisfied.
