8vo; original blue canvas blocked in pale blue and gilt; papered slipcase; tinted top edge; endpaper map; pp. 261; monochrome plates. Near fine condition, in a somewhat worn slipcase. The classic account, first published in 1831, of the Mutiny on the Bounty, of Bligh's extraordinary navigational feat in an open boat, and the eventual capture and court-martial of those believed to have been mutineers. "This book is very unusual, perhaps even unique, in two respects. The first is that its author Sir John Barrow (he accepted rather reluctantly a Baronetcy in 1835) is to the best of my belief the only Civil Servant whose name was in his lifetime, and still is, always linked with the department which he served - 'Mr Barrow of the Admiralty'. The second is that this book, which was first published by the House of John Murray, an intimate friend of Barrow's, in 1831 was still in print, though in the Oxford University Press's 'World's Classics' series, more than a century later." - From Stephen Roskill's Introduction.

Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Second printing. Tan cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. 324 pages. Portraits. No slipcase. A clean, attractive copy. "John Aubrey's Brief Lives is one of the strangest books -- if indeed this collection of notes, excerpts, gossip and dry facts can be called a book -- to have achieved literary fame. Their author was equally strange, in his way: a gentleman with the learned turn of mind, yet little formal education, a lover of books and manuscripts, yet almost penniless, a would-be scholar who loved worldly company as much as that of serious men, who spent the last twenty years of his life living in other people's houses, on the run from his creditors.".
