One inch crease at the top right corner of the front cover and there is a little dark marking to the top and bottom corners and a small nick to the right edge. The spine has a reading crease and a little chipping to the top edge and the book has a bit of a twist to it, i.e. the spine leans one way at the top and the opposite way at the bottom. The subject matter of the articles here published range from advances in astronautics, atomic energy and automation, to progress in medicine, agriculture, education, and town planning. Alexander Nikolaevich Nesmeyanov (1899, Moscow - 17 January 1980, Moscow) was a prominent Soviet chemist and academician (1943) specializing in organometallic chemistry. He obtained his degree in chemistry in 1920 from Moscow State University where he thereafter served as lecturer, professor, and eventually rector. He was the President of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1951 1961. As the rector of the Moscow State University in 1948 1951, he oversaw the construction of its new campus at Sparrow Hills. He was twice awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor (1969, 1979). He had organized and headed the laboratory of organometallic compounds first in the Institute of Organic Chemistry of USSR (1939 1954) and then in the new Institute of Organoelement Compounds of USSR (1954 1980) as the founder and the first director. This institute and the nearby street were named after A. N. Nesmeyanov. His monument is placed in front of the institute. Prof. Nesmeyanov had popularized the term "organometallic chemistry" and became the leader of this science in USSR. He had also organized the investigations of artificial and synthetic food chemistry. Prof. Nesmeyanov had discovered the reaction of diazo-compounds with metal halides which was later named after him. This reaction is widely used for the synthesis of organic derivatives of non-transition metals with their further transformation into various classes of organometallic compounds. Prof. Nesmeyanov had also developed a number of industrial chemistry processes, including production of pharmaceuticals, antiknock agents, and artificial black caviar. The individual volumes are illustrated beautifully by a range of different artists and in multiple formats. The poet, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname "Khayyam" means "tent-maker" in Persian, which might, like St. Paul/Saul, have denoted his father's vocation and major income-source. The lot is comprised of the following: 1) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1938 in New York by Illustrated Editions. A big, tall, quarto hardcover format example, bound in pebbly black cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt lettering to front cover and spine, over burgundy label, gilt and burgundy illustrations to front cover and spine. Housed in the remains of a slip-case that has done its job admirably. Evocative illustrations of Hamzeh Abd Ullah Kar throughout, pasted-on opposite the appropriate quatrain. Some uncut bottom edges. Unpaginated; 2) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, illustrated by Edmund Dulac (13 of them, including at frontis). Illustrated hardcover, overall Very Good condition exemplar, and with a matching paper dust-wrapper.
