Aggiungi al carrello12mo in sixes, engraved title and pp. iv, [396]; pagination including three leaves of advertisements at end; with ten sepia plates (of, perhaps, 22 required); contemporary calf, gilt spine (spine and upper joint slightly defective; corners bumped). Second edition: first published in 1802. This anonymous dictionary of playwrights, actors and other performers does not concern itself with long-dead people (such as Shakespeare or Dryden) but concentrates only on the 18th century and current figures. However, it does have some rather peculiar priorities: there are a dozen double-column pages on Thomas Sheridan (1719-88), but barely more than one page on his famous son, and just one column on Sarah Siddons, despite including a portrait of this famous actress. The title page calls for 'twenty-two elegant engravings', but this copy only has ten apart from the engraved title page: the entry in A&R seems to imply that there should be twenty only, so this copy must lack some, but perhaps not as many as it would at first appear. First edition of this important turn-of-the-19th century work on the inhabitants of Haiti and St. Domingo which discusses at length the struggle for independence among the black colonies, slavery, and the relationship with America. Quarto, bound in three quarter calf over marbled boards with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, marbled endpapers and edges, illustrated with an engraved map, plan, and ten striking full-page illustrated plates, advertisement at rear. Sabin 67531. In very good condition, the engraved folding map with repairs, bookplate to the pastedown. This important work on the inhabitants of Haiti and St. Domingo discusses at length the struggle for independence among the black colonies, slavery, and the relationship with America. In a chapter entitled "On the Establishment of a Black Empire, and the probable Effects of the Colonial Revolution," Rainsford notes: "Should it ever happen in the course of time, that any of the various means dispensed by providence to check the exuberance of population should fall on Hayti, either in the form of contagion, or by multiplication of the various diseases, to which the African rare are subject, in the degeneration of slavery, and that a white population should by that time be formed, capable of taking advantage of such calamity then, but not till then, should the neighboring continent of America be in a state to colonize, or the policy of European governments desire the attainment of the most splendid colony of the Antilles, an opportunity might possible be afforded. Whether it would be rational on the score of justice, or humanity to do so, is a subject not to be argued at present. Those who undertake the project, if ever it should be undertaken, will be capable of defending it with plausibility" (p. 36). Also included are articles on "An account of the Nature and History of the bloodhounds used in the American Colonies," "Declaration of Independence of the Blacks of St. Domingo," and "Statement of the Black Force at the Revolution." An important work on the history of independence and slavery in Haiti and St. Domingo.
