The title of Vol. IV (being the first of a new series) continues more fully: 'Censura literaria. Containing titles, extracts, and opinions of old English books, especially those which are scarce. To which are added Necrographia authorum, or memoirs of deceased authors; and the Ruminator, consisting of original, moral and critical essays, with other literary disquisitions.' The author/editor Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges, 1st Baronet (1762-1837) was an English bibliographer and genealogist. He was also Member of Parliament for Maidstone from 1812 to 1818. He was called to the bar from the Middle Temple in 1787. He wrote some novels and poems, now forgotten, but rendered valuable service by his bibliographical publications, especially this Censura Literaria. The book covers the geneaologies of the Imperial House of Habsburgh and of the six secular Electors of Germany; and on Roman, French, and English nobility. Original hard cover with black leather spine and corners, and marbled boards, spine is firm with a repaired thin hinge split at front lower end, and some rubbing of leather. The boards show some wear at the edges and some loss of colour. xvi, 296 pages and 21 tables, some folded. Inside front cover is a book plate - Presented anonymously to Bath Public Reference Library, but with none of the usual lending library labels, although there is a small white catalogue marker on the lower spine. Overall this scarce book published in 1807 is in good condition.

The title and volume number labels are both present. The spine has chipping at the top and bottom and some light edge cracking. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying. Marbled endpapers. Wale Family bookplate to the front pastedown. Browning around the edges of the endpapers. Two other family names to the blank page following the front free endpaper: the original owner M. P. Wale with a date 1781 and Lady Wale. There is some spotting to the pages at the front and back of the book and the pages are a little browned in places but are otherwise generally unmarked.

Ex-library with a dewey decimal number penciled in at the front of a few chapters. The front endpaper is glued to the pastedown. There is a hole to that endpaper. There is a small piece out from the top left corner of the heavily darkened half-title. The title page is slightly darkened and foxed and the pages are toned with occasional foxing or staining. There is a long tear to the folding plate opposite page 16. There are occasional pencil annotations. Good. Volume one only of this first edition, complete in itself. Only 750 copies were printed. The contents of this volume consist of: 1. "Barons by Tenure, whose Honours have been considered to have terminated, circ. 49 Henry III"; 2. "The Barons of the Counties Palatine of Chester and of Durham, distinguished from the Barons of the Realm"; 3. "An Account of those Persons who were summoned to Parliament, with whom the Honour expired; or who, or their Posterity (although existing), did not continue to receive the like Summons"; 4. "An Appendix, being the complete Substance of Sir William Dugdale's Lists of Summons to Parliament".

Marsh, biblical critic and later bishop of Peterborough was born at Faversham, Kent, on 10 December 1757 and educated at Faversham grammar school and the King's School, Canterbury, before going up to Cambridge. He travelled in Egypt, Arabia and Europe before returning to Cambridge for his BD. The Authenticity of the five Books of Moses, defending Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch was one of his qualifying sermons. 4to (235 × 190 mm). pp. 16. Stitched as issued.
