Despite significant efforts, most of the fabrication techniques developed so far require expensive equipment and complicated processing procedures, which has hindered their applications. We developed a new class of fluorescent nanoprobes consist of a silica fiber taper, a single carbon nanotube, and nanoscale fluorescent elements. This nanoprobe provides a natural interface between the nanoscale structures and the microscale structure, which can significantly simplify their fabrication. Furthermore, the nanoscale fluorescent elements are produced through bottom-up processes, which can easily tailor the functionalities of such fluorescent nanoprobes to many different applications in nanophotonics, including near field imaging, nonlinear optics mapping, and quantum electrodynamics. 68 pp. Englisch.

Several kinetic models were compared for describing P desorption rates in savanna soils of varying lithogenic origins, and the effect of soil properties on P release rate was determined. Phosphate desorption rates were best described by three empirical kinetic models: Elovich equation, the parabolic diffusion equation and the fractional power equation. The rate coefficients varied widely among soils from the same parent materials and between parent materials due probably to variations in the properties of the soils. This work is intended to give an inner understanding of P behavior and management strategies especially in tropical soils with variable charge properties and high preponderance of Fe and Al oxides, most especially to researchers and graduate students that are interested in chemical kinetics and phosphorus chemistry. 72 pp. Englisch.

Although methylene blue is not haz…ardous compared to other commercial dyes, acute exposure to methylene blue can cause increased heart rate, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and shock. Potential exposure to methylene blue can also cause hypertension, pre-cordial pain, dizziness, headache, fever, fecal discoloration, profuse sweating, mental confusion, ethemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia. Hence, there is a necessity for the treatment of effluent containing such dye due to its harmful impacts on receiving waters. Amongst the numerous techniques of dye removal, adsorption is the procedure of choice owing to its low initial cost, high efficiency and ease of operation. A large number of adsorbents especially agricultural wastes have been investigated for their efficacy as adsorbents. Heavy usage of web browsing makes the Web Quality of Experience (QoE) one of the critical factor in deciding the overall success of network services. Amongst o…thers, Web QoE can be effected by the delays in network that can result in higher application download times. An effort has been made to map applications level download times to Quality of Experience. A subjective analysis on how the user takes into account the domain of web browsing has been carried out. For this purpose a testbed was developed at Blekinge Institute of Technology on which different users were tested. Specific sequences of delays were introduced on the network which resulted in desired application download times. Regression analysis was performed and a mapping between user QoE and application download times was carried out. Based on the results conclusions were made which are presented here. 100 pp. Englisch.

One interesting question is how the combination of those two drying techniques can help… to improve the quality of dried foodstuffs. The combination of convective and microwave-vacuum drying was implemented with a new modular drying processor to dry red bell pepper and model food in such a way which could result in minimising the degradation of vitamin C. In three sets of combined processes, the products were convective dried up to 70 % (first set), 50 % or 40 % (second set) and 30 % (third set) of initial weight at first and followed by microwave-vacuum drying till 15 % w.b. moisture content. The determined convective drying curves were used to calculate the Fick's and self diffusion coefficients of those foodstuffs to get an overview of the diffusional behaviour of water. These analyses would help food manufacturers for implementing proper drying technique to preserve red bell pepper for different processing requirements. At the same time model food could be used for proper evaluation of the degradation kinetics of vitamin C during drying. 88 pp. Englisch.

A general Built-In Self-Test (BIST) architecture to test the programmable I/O cells in FPGAs or associated with the FPGA core of System-on-Chip (SoC) implementations is proposed. The I/O cells are tested for various modes of operation along with their associated programmable routing resources. The proposed BIST architecture has been implemented and verified on Atmel AT94K10 and AT94K40 SoCs. A total of 161 and 303 configuration downloads are required to test the I/O cells of AT94K10 and AT94K40 devices, respectively. The use of an embedded processor for dynamic partial reconfiguration reduced the number of configuration downloads to three for both the AT94K10 and AT94K40 devices. The implementation of dynamic partial reconfiguration gave a speed up of 99.39 times in test time and a reduction in configuration memory storage requirements by 101 times for AT94K40 devices. 100 pp. Englisch.
