Octavo, khaki boards (hardcover), 200 pp. Fine in a Very Good dust jacket with edgewear. From dust jacket: The noblest era of English history is called alternatively the Elizabethan and the Shakespearian Age. Yet these two names both represent historical enigmas. Ever since serious study of Shakespeare's art began, two hundred years ago, more and more people have found themselves unable to reconcile the life of the Stratford actor, who was called by himself and contemporary records William Shakespere, with the author revealed in the works who was called by the men of the day Shake-speare. The list includes men like Henry James, Mark Twain, and Sigmund Freud, who once wrote: "I no longer believe that the actor William Shakespeare from Stratford was the author of the works so long attributed to him." Could Shakespere, leaving an uncultured milieu with little or no formal education, within a few years create plays showing an intimate knowledge of courtly life, imbued with classical and modern literature? Why was he the only poet to write no elegy for the death of Queen Elizabeth, though explicitly called to do so? Queen Elizabeth herself also presents an enigma. Modern biography has revealed, quite apart from her amazing talents as ruler and statesman, scholastic and literary gifts of the first order, and a personality which on closer analysis has become ever more intriguing and labyrinthine. "Elizabeth,' one modern biographer has written, "remains to this day one of the mysteries of history." British History, British Biography, Shakespeare, Shakespere, Queen Elizabeth, Literature, Drama, Theater, Theatre bslic.

Octavo, navy blue boards (hardcover), 128 pp. Boards slightly warped; otherwise, Near-Fine, with neat former-owner bookplate; in a Very Good+, mylar protected dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges. From dust jacket: This is a true account of a series of colourful incidents in the life of a most modest and brave man. Although a great deal of the book is devoted to descriptions of episodes which took place in RAF Bomber Command, it also includes such widely varying subjects as the description of an investiture at Buckingham Palace to the excitement of a long-distance reliability motor trial. The title has been chosen because it represents the motto of the famous No. 83 Pathfinder Squadron in which the author completed his extended tour of night bomber sorites in 1942, taking part in no less than sixty-six bombing raids over Occupied Europe. An unusual feature of Strike to Defend is the fact that the author describes scenes observed from the navigator's table and from the perspex nose of the bomber. From these positions he was able to observe many dramatic incidents which took place both inside and outside the aircraft. Strike to Defend will appeal not only to those who served in the RAF, but also to anyone who is interested in the technicalities of flying, air navigation and motor sport. Aviation, World War II, WWII, Royal Air Force. yslic.

223p., yellow boards titled black in pictorial dj, translated from the Spanish by Christopher Martin. First British edition, good copy. "Virulently" anti-Franco novel, set in the dictator's conscript military. Author Ortas at age 17 "joined Franco's Republican Air Force. From 1939 he spent several years in French concentration camps, was imprisoned for five years in Spain on political grounds, is at present living in London having sought political asylum." He has also published a novel in Mexico based on these experiences (different title in English namely Soldier and a Half). The dedication softens Ortas' "virulence," which dedication is to "the best infantry in the world" [sic; in context none other than his old outfit], likewise in acknowledgements Ortas cites as reprehensible the Spanish Army's "rickety structure, rigid internal hierarchy, lack of money and supplies, and the corruption of a few [sic] officers." Period. To further gild this mildness odd in a political exile, he grinds his teeth most about "the miserable sum which the Spanish Army receives fortnightly under the comic title of 'extras'".
