Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Wrappers. Reprint (first printed 1953); the historian Sir George Clark was Provost of Oriel College, Oxford, from 1947 to 1957. "Another conversation of Easter Term 1895 has been recorded. In his book Long Innings Sir Pelham Warner tells us that Rhodes and Dr. Jameson spent a weekend with Monro in the Provost's Lodgings. He goes on: 'I was one of the half-dozen or so undergraduates bidden to meet him at breakfast, when I was fortunate enough to sit next to him. I have a good memory for some things - cricket scores and initials, and conversations which interest me - and, though it is fifty-six years ago, the following is an almost word for word record of part of that conversation: C.J.R.: What are you going to do when you go down? P.F.W.: I am going to the Bar, and am "eating dinners" at the Inner Temple. C.J.R.: Do you ever get any coloured men there? P.F.W.: Yes, a few. C.J.R.: Do you ever sit near them? P.F.W.: Yes, we are often placed in messes of four. C.J.R.: Do you talk to them? P.F.W.: Yes. C.J.R.: Do you like them? P.F.W.: Yes, I do. C.J.R.: Do you like them? C.J.R.: Well, I don't.' ".

Condizione: Very good plus. First edition. Scarce first printing of these Knoxian verses, variously Etonian, Oxonian, and Sherlockian. These mostly poetic selections conclude with Knox's sub-Platonic Decalogue Symposium, among whose participants are Peter Pan, Socrates, and Sherlock Holmes, and which almost makes up for Knox's inclusion elsewhere of certain catastrophic limericks. "Yes," says his Aristotle, "it would be very clever if the author had thought out his position at all." Knox, well-known in certain circles for his "Studies in the Literature of Sherlock Holmes" as well as for his own works of detective fiction, has benefited greatly from his good fortune in being both the uncle and the biographical subject of Penelope Fitzgerald; he had also the fortune of being the biographical subject (though not the uncle) of Evelyn Waugh. One may suppose this pleased him. 7.25'' x 5''. Original blue cloth, stamped in gilt. 88 pages. Though no provenance markings, this copy from the library of the noted actor and Sherlockian Curtis Armstrong. Mild wear and rubbing to boards at extremities. Pages lightly toned.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing) of the author's most uncommon second (?) book. 8vo. 88pp. Blue cloth lettered in gold at the spine and upper board. Spine ends rubbed, endpapers spotted and lightly browned. A tiny dealer plate to the base of the front pastedown. A very crisp and bright copy. A printed dedication "To all Old Etonians, Good Churchman and Smokers of Briar Pipes" precedes a selection of seventeen poems and five prose pieces, including the lengthy Sherlockian 'A Decalogue Symposium' which features both Holmes and Watson. Knox and his three brothers (signing themselves 'The Sign of Four') wrote to Conan Doyle in 1904 pointing out a series of inconsistencies in his detective stories, and it has been hypothesised that this letter served as the backdrop for his Decalogue, which was originally written for performance by a Balliol literary society.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. First Ediition. Black and white illustrations throughout by Basil Temple Blackwood. First Edition. Small 4to. [196 x 162 x 8 mm]. 47, [1] pp. Original grey boards, printed in black and red. (Spine worn, with partial loss, covers a little discoloured, free endleaves browned.) A few trivial marks, but a very good clean copy. It is neatly inscribed in ink on the front free endleaf "Wasey Sterry Xmas 1896" and beneath the initials on the title he has added in pencil "Henri Belloc" and "Basil Temple Blackwood". As this was Belloc's second book he might be forgiven for mistaking his name. Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc (1870-1953) was born in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, France and moved to England after the death of his father in 1872. He graduated from Balliol College in 1895, having been President of the Oxford Union. In 1896 he married Elodie Hogan, and they had five children. He was the author of more than 150 books, and when asked why he wrote so much, he replied: "Because my children are howling for pearls and caviar". His first book, Verses and Sonnets was published by Ward and Downey in 1896, but is thought to have been withdrawn and suppressed. The Bad Child's Book of Beasts is said to have sold 4000 copies within the first three months (where are they now?) and a second edition was published in 1897. It was the start of his collaboration with the illustrator Lord Ian Basil Gawaine Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood (1870-1917), the son of the 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Eva. "B.T.B." was a contemporary of Belloc at Balliol, and their future joint works included More Beasts for Worse Children (!897) and Cautionary Tales for Children (1907), in which Belloc describes the drawings as "the nicest things you ever saw". In The Bad Child's Book of Beasts the superficially naive verses give tongue-in-cheek advise to children. The animals tend to be sage-like, and the humans dull and self-satisfied. The illustrations have drawn comparisons to the later creations of Dr. Seuss. Lord Alfred Douglas accused Belloc of plagarizing his work Tales with a Twist, although it was published two years later, in 1898. Sir Wasey Sterry (1866-1955) was the sixth generation of his family to be named Wasey. He was educated at Eton (1878-1885) and Merton College, Oxford (1885-1889) and became a barrister of Lincoln's Inn in 1892. In 1901 he entered British Colonial Service and was assigned to the Sudan as a judge. He was appointed Chief Justice of Sudan in 1915 and served as acting Governor-General 1923-1925. In 1919 he married Renee Bonfils in Cairo, but they had no children. He was knighted in 1925 and retired to England in 1938. He took up genealogy and published The Eton College Register, 1441-1698 in 1943. Basil Temple Blackwood (illustratore).
