Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Ever since Aristotle pointed out how closely time, space, and plot are linked in literary texts, the study of time and space not only in literature but in the arts in general has been at the heart of Western European poetics. This has been particularly apparent in recent years, when interest in time has been joined by a 'spatial turn' in cultural studies and the German Kulturwissenschaften. This anthology of research in German studies bears witness to these developments. Drawing on the work of theorists such as Mikhail Bakhtin and Gabriel Zoran, the contributors cover a range of topics including simultaneity in medieval narrative, Paul Klee's understanding of the line, and the cyberliterature of Thomas Hettche and Botho Strauß. Together, the essays show that the study of time and space is an interdisciplinary undertaking and reflect the extent to which concepts of time and space are subject to historical change and vary across media. 180 pp. Englisch, Deutsch.

Behandelt werden u.a.

As an «occupation baby», born in a small German town in 1947, Ika has a double stigma: Not only has she been born out of wedlock, but she is also Black. Although loved by her mother, Ika's experiences with German society's reaction to her skin color resonate with the insidiousness of racism, thus instilling in her a longing to meet her biological father. When she is seven, the state places her into a church-affiliated orphanage far away from where her mother, sister, and stepfather live. She is exposed to the scorn and cruelty of the nuns entrusted with her care. Despite the institutionalized racism, Ika overcomes these hurdles, and finally, when she is in her forties, she locates her father with the help of a good friend and discovers that she has a loving family in Chicago. 164 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book examines, from a behavioral perspective, the U.S. Supreme Court's exercise of the power of judicial review over Congress across two hundred years of the Court's history, testing the major competing theories in political science - the attitudinal model and the strategic approach - through systematic empirical analysis. Exploring the major trends in the Court's use of this power over time, the book examines a broad range of questions concerning the countermajoritarian nature of this power, and provides an analysis of each of the individual justices' behavior along several dimensions of the power, such as the use of judicial review to protect minority rights against majority intrusion. The book concludes that the Court has shown a high level of deference to Congress, with notable historic highs and lows, and generally that the exercise of the power has been less countermajoritarian than is usually assumed. Its analyses find the strongest level of support for the attitudinal approach to judicial decision making, but also concludes that strategic concerns cannot be dismissed, especially for the more recent Courts. 210 pp. Englisch.

Based on observations and interviews the author conducted while serving as the contracted program evaluator, the book investigates how denial, surveillance, coercion, accountability, and definitions of success operate and interact in the Juvenile Drug Court environment and intertwine with institutional needs and authority structures. The book's findings suggest that some drug court practices may expose participants to potential harms that until now have been largely ignored in studies of drug courts. Drug Court Justice concludes with suggestions for reducing the potential harms of juvenile drug courts. 140 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Trusting Schools and Teachers: Developing Educational Professionalism Through Self-Evaluation emerged from a series of studies undertaken with teachers at various stages of their careers exploring the impact of a range of evaluation systems on their personal and professional development. The book begins with a comparative analysis of the rise of school and teacher evaluation, charting the trend's conceptual and political influences, and highlights how the concept of self-evaluation has come, for a variety of reasons, to play a surprisingly large role in the emerging approaches to school and teacher evaluation. This is illustrated by a detailed analysis of the emerging system of whole-school evaluation in Ireland. Research indicates that while self-evaluation looms large in the system's theoretical framework, in fact, there is strong evidence that neither schools nor teachers have the expertise required to systematically self-evaluate. This book identifies methodologies designed to empower schools and teachers to become genuinely self-evaluating through the development of research skills in the context of online communities of practice. 242 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The globalisation of culture and the shifting nature of national identities have propelled the stakes of memory and identity to the forefront of current intellectual debates. In recent years, the works of the Algerian francophone author Assia Djebar have reflected a growing preoccupation with the role of memory in forging a sense of individual as well as collective identity. This study traces the interrelated motifs of memory and identity in Djebar's novels, arguing the centrality of these themes to her literary project. An interdisciplinary theoretical framework positions Djebar's corpus in the wider context of philosophical and psychoanalytical debates on memory and identity. Djebar reveals that much more is at stake in discussions of the interrelationship between memory and identity than concerns of a mere cultural nature. In postcolonial Algeria, repressed memories of Algeria's colonial past are revealed as instrumental to the genealogy of the current Algerian conflict; in this context, Djebar's poetics of memory become a 'devoir de mémoire', an appeal for a revised Algerian historiography in which the individual takes pride of place. 266 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Modernism and Coherence is an attempt to develop a negative aesthetics conceived as determinate resistance of artworks against the meaning assigned to them by criticism. From the accumulation of arguments on great texts of modernism, the book describes gestures of refusal that generate figures of negativity: Adorno's Aesthetic Theory becomes a whirlpool revolving around a center refusing predication; Wallace Stevens' poetry exhibits a phonetic escape valve against the pressure of reality; Robert Frost writes a poem that is ahead of you in both senses of the expression; and James Joyce's Ulysses reads its readers in waves of self-folding. This book is an effort to salvage literature as something in itself in a world that increasingly can only see what is for the other. 160 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A highly significant movement within the Silver Age, harlequinade did not surface in Russian high culture until the turn of the twentieth century, when it suddenly began to attract the close attention of symbolist authors. In the present work, an attempt is made to show that the proliferation of the new cultural idiom was indicative of the fundamental concerns of the time and intimately related to the development of artistic thought. Although the theme is considered in its cultural totality (visual arts, literature and drama), the work is focused on symbolist poetry. It provides a close analysis of the 'harlequinade' verse of Blok and Belyi - two leading figures of the movement, in whose writings the symbolist theory found its maturity and perfection. The poems in question are conceptually centred on the dialectical unity of self and other - one of the key-notes in the new symbolist outlook. This is traced at various levels of poetic representation: in the imagery system and the principles of text construction, in linguistic features and poetic devices employed by the authors. Special attention is given to the sound organization of the poems, which heightens considerably the semantic potential of the text. 298 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the context of the enlargements of 2004 and 2007 the European Union needed a concept for the future relationship with its new neighbours. The result was the development of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). In return for sharing European values and effectively implementing political, economic and institutional reforms, the EU offers economic incentives and closer ties to its eastern and southern neighbours. The ambitious objective of promoting stability, security and prosperity beyond its own borders raises questions about the Union's intentions, means and likely success. This volume analyses the logic and institutional origins of the ENP and provides a critical assessment of the promises and prospects of the EU's broader neighbourhood policies. It does so both from an issue-oriented perspective (e.g. security, visa policy, trade, aid, human rights, good governance) and a regional standpoint: eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Western Balkans and Russia. 318 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The majority of scholarly works on the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the establishment of its successor states focus almost exclusively on the national question. There is no major study of the subnational regional dimension, which had significant effects on the politics and political structures of these newly independent states. This book addresses this deficit by examining the struggle of Istrian regionalists in the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) against the nearly hegemonic nationalists of the Croatian ruling party, the Croatian Democratic Alliance (HDZ). Using a wide variety of primary and secondary sources, this instrumentalist analysis assays the political historiography of Istria in the 19th and 20th centuries, provides an analytical case study of the regionalist conflict with the HDZ in the 1990s and into the 21st century, illustrates how and why the regionalist party tried to influence both Istrians and Western Europeans in this struggle, and derives a critical analysis of the role of regionalism in European Union enlargement from this case study. It also shows that nationalists do not hold a monopoly on the politicization of identities. 157 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the fifteen years before the publication of Leaves of Grass (1855), Walt Whitman constructed three authoritative voices by which he engaged the upheavals endemic to the Industrial Revolution. Through these public personas, found mostly in his journalism, Whitman offered remedies for American artisans who had lost their economic autonomy and status. Instead of attacking broad forces beyond worker control, Whitman blamed artisans for oppressing themselves through the temptations of consumerism and affectation. Walt Whitman's Multitudes places the first edition of Leaves of Grass on par with Whitman's journalism and exposes a writer different from most poetry-directed analyses. In doing so, it traces Whitman's public voice as he wrestled intimately with the debates of his day: conspicuous consumption, nativism, slavery, and, through it all, labor and the status of the new working class. 170 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book assembles lectures and essays on literature (William Wordsworth, Walter Benjamin, Chinese mountain poetry, Friedrich Nietzsche, the Tao Te Ching ), art (Paleolithic cave art, Vincent Van Gogh, American landscape painting), and Japanese poetry forms (haiku, haibun, tanka) that were originally presented and published between 2000 and 2007. The essays identify strategies to counter the so-called postmodern condition. Matters of will, ethics, and consciousness are examined in comparative contexts with the aim of formulizing models of enlightened states of being and their aesthetic expressions. This study focuses on Wordsworth's rainbow epiphany; Walter Benjamin's 'aura' and 'monad'; Chinese mountain poetry's cosmic emptiness; Nietzsche's Hyperborean; Paleolithic cave art's transpersonal expression; Van Gogh's 'dizzy heights' of natural beauty; American landscape painters' depiction of the sublime; haiku's absolute metaphor epiphany; and tanka's connection between natural beauty and erotic feeling. The collection is a re-examination of Ralph Waldo Emerson's 'fundamental unity' between humanity and nature, as well as an examination of often-unmediated affective experience and its expression in this context through literature and art. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -From its very beginning, African American drama has borne witness to the creative power of the slaves to maintain their human dignity as well as to fashion a complex culture of survival. If the memory of slavery has always been at the heart of the African American theatrical tradition, it is the way in which it is processed and inscribed that has developed and is still changing. Through the close reading and socio-historical analysis of eight plays from 1939 to 1996, the author seeks to unravel the fluctuating patterns in the shaping of the theatrical memory of slavery long after its abolition. To do so, she defines the concept and practice of mnemopoetics as the making of memory through imagination as well as the critical approaches that decipher and interpret cultural productions of memory. As a constellation of processes akin to the fluidity of memory, mnemopoetics blends creative representation and critical exploration to suggest that the cultural creation of memory necessarily entails a self-reflexive involvement with its own interpretation. If slavery embodies the deep, foundational memory of America, African American drama represents the open, communal space where it becomes possible to convert the irretrievable nature of a vicarious past into the redeeming function of a collective memory. 226 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -As they oscillate and flow between action and aesthetics, habit and creativity, rhythms are vital to our understanding of how subjectivities are constructed upon the shifting borderlines between life and art. Yet whilst rhythm remains an established concept in studies of French poetry, this is the first major overview to address the centrality of rhythm in fields such as literature, philosophy, dance and film, and to link these debates across periods and disciplines within French Studies. Drawing on thinkers such as Deleuze and Guattari, Kristeva, Lefebvre, Meschonnic, and Virilio, the authors explore the concept of rhythms in relation to questions of temporality and the everyday, technology and the city, poetry and autobiography, space and the body in performance. In a wide-ranging series of innovative, theoretical and close readings, they examine issues which include the poetics of Mallarmé and Bonnefoy, the writings of Ernaux, Perec, Réda and Zobel, the choreography of Merce Cunningham and the cinema of Chris Marker. 246 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Invisible Woman: Growing Up Black in Germany, republished in a new annotated edition, recounts Ika Hügel-Marshall¿s experiences growing up as the daughter of a white German woman and an African-American man after World War II. As an «occupation baby», born in a small German town in 1947, Ika has a double stigma: Not only has she been born out of wedlock, but she is also Black. Although loved by her mother, Ikäs experiences with German society¿s reaction to her skin color resonate with the insidiousness of racism, thus instilling in her a longing to meet her biological father. When she is seven, the state places her into a church-affiliated orphanage far away from where her mother, sister, and stepfather live. She is exposed to the scorn and cruelty of the nuns entrusted with her care. Despite the institutionalized racism, Ika overcomes these hurdles, and finally, when she is in her forties, she locates her father with the help of a good friend and discovers that she has a loving family in Chicago.Lang, Peter GmbH, Gontardstraße 11, 10178 Berlin 164 pp. Englisch.

This study investigates L Vocalisation in the speech of the middle classes and reveals its widespread acceptance. The social factors Age and Gender are significant: young male adults are in the lead. L Vocalisation prevails in the speech of people in the South of England with regional links to urban areas. Back vowels encourage this process, whilst front vowels still hinder it. Thus, bulb is more likely to be pronounced as [bAub] than silk as [siuk]. Comparably, R Dropping began in the Early Modern English period, and has led to non-rhotic varieties of English. Since both /r/ and /l/ are weak consonants, their progressive weakening in the coda position is only to be expected. 236 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This book examines, from a behavioral perspective, the U.S. Its analyses find the strongest level of support for the attitudinal approach to judicial decision making, but also concludes that strategic concerns cannot be dismissed, especially for the more recent Courts.Lang, Peter GmbH, Gontardstraße 11, 10178 Berlin 210 pp.

For the scholars and writers involved in this process, Aran was used as a projection space for various desires - political, cultural and linguistic. This book maps the formation and development of a myth of place and analyses what functions it fulfilled at different stages in Irish history. The first literary history of Aran surveys an extensive compilation of texts and provides larger historical and cultural contexts. On this basis, five in-depth studies of works by Emily Lawless, John Synge, James Joyce, Liam O'Flaherty and Máirtín Ó Direáin unravel discourses and textual strategies employed in the representation of the Aran Islands. 226 pp.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This collection provides the first full-length investigation of the oeuvre of one of Britain's leading dramatists: Timberlake Wertenbaker. By considering the polyglot playwright's theatre from translations and adaptations to new plays as a dynamic continuum of «translations and transformations», Maya Roth and Sara Freeman create an intriguing, focused frame for understanding Wertenbaker's work as distinctly cross-cultural, theatrically rich, and intertextual, providing a prescient case study of the translational turn emerging in international theatre today. The contributors investigate translation theory and practice through Wertenbaker's diverse linguistic and genre translations - from French, ancient Greek, and Italian to English, and from myth, history, classics, fairytale, and literature to the stage. Interrelated chapters by scholars and artists from varied countries, language traditions, and disciplines use performance studies, comparative literature, feminist theory, and cultural anthropology to position Wertenbaker's theatre as a critical nexus for analyzing - and imagining - cross-historical dialogues with contemporary audiences and our plural legacies. Thanks to its substantive engagement with the ethics, theories, and collaborative practices of theatrical translation and adaptation more broadly, and its equally rigorous examination of Wertenbaker's hybridic politics and poetics, this collection can serve as a useful resource for scholars and artists, both. 292 pp. Englisch.

The book begins with a theoretical overview: the problem of defining democracy, democratic transition and democratic consolidation. It proceeds to an examination of the historical, political, and economic factors relevant for the democratization. The transition is explained from Yugoslav, Slovenian, and external aspects, where foundations for patterns in Slovenian democratization are sought. The consolidation is examined on the institutional level and on the level of the actors. In the concluding analysis, the indicators of democratic consolidation are examined in a comparative perspective and applied to Slovenia. 252 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Ever since Aristotle pointed out how closely time, space, and plot are linked in literary texts, the study of time and space not only in literature but in the arts in general has been at the heart of Western European poetics. This has been particularly apparent in recent years, when interest in time has been joined by a ¿spatial turn¿ in cultural studies and the German Kulturwissenschaften. Together, the essays show that the study of time and space is an interdisciplinary undertaking and reflect the extent to which concepts of time and space are subject to historical change and vary across media.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 180 pp. Englisch, Deutsch.

Neuware -Trusting Schools and Teachers: Developing Educational Professionalism Through Self-Evaluation emerged from a series of studies undertaken with teachers at various stages of their careers exploring the impact of a range of evaluation systems on their personal and professional development. The book begins with a comparative analysis of the rise of school and teacher evaluation, charting the trend¿s conceptual and political influences, and highlights how the concept of self-evaluation has come, for a variety of reasons, to play a surprisingly large role in the emerging approaches to school and teacher evaluation. This is illustrated by a detailed analysis of the emerging system of whole-school evaluation in Ireland. Research indicates that while self-evaluation looms large in the system¿s theoretical framework, in fact, there is strong evidence that neither schools nor teachers have the expertise required to systematically self-evaluate. This book identifies methodologies designed to empower schools and teachers to become genuinely self-evaluating through the development of research skills in the context of online communities of practice.Lang, Peter GmbH, Gontardstraße 11, 10178 Berlin 242 pp. Englisch.
