Paperback. Condizione: New. THE HARLEM BOOK OF THE DEAD with text and photographs by JAMES VAN DER ZEE, OWEN DODSON, CAMILLE ILLOPS, TONY MORRISON, KARLA FC HOLLOWAY. The publication is the most complete record of Van Der Zee's funerary photographs, featuring over three dozen portraits by the artist, who meticulously composed th…e setting and subjects before using his renowned dark room and retouching skills to superimpose celestial figures, poetry, biblical scenes, or portraits onto the images to compensate for lack of adornments, such as flowers, or to fulfill the requests of his subjects or their families. Billops recognized the singular value in these portraits and collected them for the first time here, choosing to pair them with Dodson's words to replicate a pairing of "death's oldest companionsthe portrait artist and the poet." Further, her introduction and interview provide a valuable service in detailing the history of Van Der Zee's life and work, his compositional decisions in the portraits, and the lives of his subjects and the circumstances of their passing.During his lifetime, Van Der Zee was primarily known as a studio photographer, with an active portrait practice dating from 1916 to his death in 1983. His work took off between the World Wars and he is largely responsible for providing a visual record of the emergent Black middle class in the early twentieth century, capturing weddings, funerals, parades, sports clubs, community groups, and infantrymen (such as the Harlem Hellfighters). Over the years, understanding of Van Der Zee's workwhich was imbued from the start with creative technical masteryhas evolved and he is no longer seen as a mere documentarian but rather a visionary artist who amplified the beauty of the life and community around him. (Publishers desdcription) 108 pages, paper with stiff cover. 9" x 10 1/2". New, in publishers shrink wrap.

Broken Music is an essential compendium for records created by visual artists. The publication was edited by Ursula Block and Michael Glasmeier and originally published in 1989 by DAAD. Softcover. white wraps w/ bw illustrations & black printing. book x, 338 pgs w/ illustrations. "Forty-six years after its publication, Primary Information brings Yvonne Rainer's classic book back into print in an exact facsimile. In 1974, Yvonne Rainer published Work 1961-73, an illustrated catalog of her performance works up to… that point. In these years, as the art world turned toward minimalism, Rainer and her Judson Dance Theater colleagues were engaged in a parallel, and equally radical, redefinition of dance. Stripping dance of its pomp and self-serious virtuosity, they created what dancer and choreographer Pat Catterson has called 'the people's dance.' Or, as Rainer put it, instead of the 'overblown plot' of traditional dance, she explored the obvious alternative: 'stand, walk, run, eat, carry bricks, show movies, or move and be moved by some thing other than oneself.' Work 1961-73 chronicles the years when Rainer found herself and her work at the heart of a revolution in dance, performance and art. Written in Rainer's wonderful frank, funny and perceptive prose, and illustrated with photographs, handwritten scores, sketches, press articles and ephemera, Work 1961-73 is a period document and an instruction manual, an archive and a manifesto. A sought-after, rare classic, Work 1961-73 is brought back into print in a true facsimile edition by Primary Information; the only change is the small addition of new notes at the back of the book"--Artbook.com. Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover/Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Martine Syms.Shame Space. New York: Primary Information, 2020.Softcover.240 pages. Very good. Clean, but for chipping to top spine. Shame Space is an artist book that explores the possibilities of narrative and identity. The book collects a selection of journal writings by Syms from 20…15-2017 in which she attempts to capture her shadow self alongside a selection of image stills from the recent video project Ugly Plymouths (2020). The diaristic commentary in Shame Space is gathered into fifteen chapters that stage narrative as a process of being in the making. Text entries in Shame Space have formed the voiceover of Mythiccbeing (pronounced 'my thick being'), a "black, upwardly mobile, violent, solipsistic, sociopathic, gender-neutral femme" digital avatar who has iterated across several of Syms's recent exhibitions. In the artist's dense, multi-channel media installations, Mythiccbeing manifests variously in video, in pre-programmed audio recordings of the artist's voice, and as an interactive chatbot, which responds to the viewer's communications with images, messages, and animations. Shame Space's design mimics the bible form, with its A5 size, embossed leather-textured cover, and gold edge painting. Translating Syms's ongoing research and interest in new media technologies to the page, the book's still images were coded using a programming script, such that the design, like the chatbot's SMS responses, is an exercise in machine automation. Martine Syms is an artist who has earned wide recognition for a practice that combines conceptual grit, humor, and social commentary. She has shown extensively including solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and ICA London. She is in a band called Aunt Sister and hosts CCartalkLA, a monthly radio show on NTS. She also runs Dominica, a publishing imprint for artists' books.

270 pp.; 27 x 20.9 cm.; glue bound; black-and-white & color; edition size 75; signed and numbered; offset-printed "This limited edition is comprised of the Destroy All Monsters Magazine publication signed by the collective's original members: Mike Kelley, Cary Loren, Niagara, and Jim Shaw. Also included is an 8×10 silver print b…y Cary Loren and a small glycine baggie of dirt from God's Oasis?the commune Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw lived in from 1974 to 1976 and which served as the collective's musical practice space. Destroy All Monsters Magazine was edited by Cary Loren and contained artwork, photographs, and flyers from bandmates Mike Kelley, Cary Loren, Niagara, and Jim Shaw. Printed using any papers and techniques available to the band, the issues combine the cut-and-paste tactics of punk zines with a psychedelic affinity for color. Destroy All Monsters Magazine functions as a kind of manifesto, providing insight into the band through densely layered pages with movie imagery, kitsch, cartoons, delicate drawings, and counter-culture collages. While Destroy All Monsters has been the subject of recent exhibitions and partial reprints, this is the first time that all issues have been reprinted." -- publisher's statement. Fine. Complete special edition copy with signed photograph and baggie of dirt. Numbered 6/75.

Aggiungi al carrelloSusan Solt (ed), Mary Ellen Solt, The Collected Poems of Mary Ellen Solt, Primary Information, New York, 2024. 240pp. 234 x 170mm, paperback, printed in colour. The Collected Poems of Mary Ellen Solt brings together nearly five decades of poetic work. Celebrated for her suite of visual poems Flowers in Concrete, much of Solt's w…ork has remained little known or unpublished. From her lyrical engagement with the "American idiom" of William Carlos Williams to her masterful forays into visual and concrete poetry, this volume, assembled and edited by her daughter Susan Solt, provides an in-depth documentation of a truly original writer who was at the center of some of the most daring global poetic developments of the mid-twentieth century. One of the few Americans, and rare women, in the concrete poetry movement, Solt edited the influential anthology Concrete Poetry: A World View (1968), which brought her to the forefront of that movement not only as a poet, but as an acclaimed critic. After a prominent career as an independent scholar, Solt became a professor of comparative literature at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she and her colleagues developed and expanded one of the first interarts studies programs in the United States.

Aggiungi al carrello1016 pp.; 10.5 x 19.5 x 2.5 inches; slipcase; black-and-white; edition size 100; signed and numbered; offset-printed; "Avalanche" magazine was founded by Willoughby Sharp and Liza Béar shortly after they met in 1968. At the time, Sharp was a New York-based art historian and independent curator, and Béar an underground magazine e…ditor who had recently moved to New York from London. They published the first issue in 1970 and collaborated on 13 issues from 1970 to 1976. "Avalanche" focused on art from the perspective of artists rather than critics, and investigated new forms of art that were developing in the U.S. and Europe with a radical new media format--probing interviews, extensive use of photography, and dynamic layouts. For many artists, publication in "Avalanche" preceded a one-person gallery or museum show. Aside from an eight-page news section, the editorial content included only interviews by Sharp and / or Béar, artists'' texts, and documents of art and art making, also functioning as an exhibition space in print. Fresh, incisive and unpretentious, the "Avalanche" interviews -- now landmarks -- illuminate the creative process and give a clear voice to the specific issues that permeated the era. Among the featured artists were Vito Acconci, Joseph Beuys, Hanne Darboven, Walter De Maria, Jan Dibbets, Philip Glass, Barry Le Va, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Gordon Matta-Clark, Bruce Nauman, Dennis Oppenheim, Yvonne Rainer, Keith Sonnier, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, William Wegman, Lawrence Weiner and Jackie Winsor. This boxed facsimile edition of Avalanche''s complete run reproduces the first eight issues individually, and the final five in a single-bound paperback. This limited edition copy is accompanied by a certificate signed by both Liza Béar and Willoughby Sharp shortly before Sharp''s death in December 2008. The publication is 1,016 pages and illustrated throughout; is housed in a heavy-duty, laminated, archival box measuring 10.5 x 19.5 x 2.5 inches. The first eight issues measure 9.25 x 9.25 inches and are exact facsimiles of the originals the subsequent five tabloid-sized issues, now bound as a single volume measuring 9.25 x 13.5 inches, have been reduced slightly in scale from the original format. This edition weighs approximately 12 lbs (packed weight). The edition will be shipped in a made-to-fit outer box of heavy-duty cardboard to ensure safety and protection.
