Chronicles Norden's voyage through Egypt in the years 1737-1738, and to this day remains a primary source for t…he looks of Egyptian monuments before widespread 19th and 20th century tourism and excavations. Originally published in English in 1757 as Travels in Egypt & Nubia, in 2 vols., and abridged the same year as A Compendium of the Most Approved Modern Travels, vol. 4, The Travels of F.L. Norden through Egypt and Nubia [Title was first pubished in French in 1755 as Voyage d'Egypte et de Nubie.] This copy is circa 1757 and is most likely a pirated edition, possibly published by J. Smith of Dublin, who also published the title under his own imprint. We can find no copies listed in any of the standard or on-line bibliographies bearing publishers listed, leading to the speculation that this is a false imprint. Title toned at margins and showing old private library stamp at lower extremity. Very neat penciled notes, with page numbers, on inside rear cover. No name, no book-plate, etc. Text is very clean with no marking, soiling or foxing. A very well preserved copy in a strong, well executed utilitarioan binding. A rare book, we can locate only one other copy on-line currently for sale.

Priced to go. ?Of the Law of Nature and Nations, originally published in 1672 as De Jure Naturae et Gentium Libri Octo, proposed a system of private, public, and international law based on natural law. It was written by Baron Samuel von Pufendorf (1632 ? 1694), a German political philosopher, statesman, and historian.The son of a Saxon clergyman, he had originally intended to pursue a career in the church, but after studying theology at the University of Leipzig his interests shifted to politics, law, and philosophy. In 1658 Pufendorf became a tutor to a minister to King Charles X of Sweden, and three years later he was granted a chair at the University of Heidelberg for the law of nature and nations, the first of its kind in the world. Two years after accepting an offer from the King of Sweden to teach at the University of Lund, Pufendorf published this book. Pufendorf was highly critical of those who abused power, whether they did so through the state or the church, and he proposed that international law should not be restricted to Christendom and instead respect the rights of all men. It was highly influential, not only in Germany, where it is said to have contributed to the Enlightenment during the eighteenth century, but throughout Europe and eventually in the United States. Pufendorf?s grounding of political concepts in natural law made him a person of interest to future American leaders such as Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.? [- W&M Law Library].
