Black-and-white crests by Hide Doki. Guter Zustand. Schutzumschlag leicht fleckig. Aus dem Klappentext: "In this exquisite volume of haiku, Günther Klinge takes us on a journey through the days and nights of each of the seasons, beginning with the spring dawn and ending with a winter midnight. - Haiku (jap. Previous owner's note on the endpaper in ballpoint pen, the binding is slightly rubbed, the pages are slightly browned due to the paper, otherwise a very good and clean copy without markings. - (publishing text:) HERE AT LAST is an entertaining account in English of the historical mass seppuku (disembowelment) of the forty-seven ronin, or masterless samurai, shortly after the turn of the 18th century in the feudal Tokugawa days of old Japan. The forty-seven ronin were ordered to commit seppuku for their vindictive slaying of a corrupt court official whom they held ultimately responsible for bringing about the death of their master, Lord Asano. Asano was the brash young daimyo from the country whose ignorance of and unfamiliarity with the changing ways of the Edo court led not only to his own seppuku but also to the complete ruin and dissemination of his family and clan. Though based on an actual incident, many details have been lost to history, and, as a result, several versions of the forty-seven ronin story have been told. But the fact remains that they were given the death penalty for their deed, which, at the time, so embodied the Japanese's ideals of the noble samurai's devotion to his lord that the forty-seven ronin were enshrined at Sengaku Temple beside their beloved master. Thus came to a dramatic close the final chapter of what has been acclaimed the most famous vendetta in the annals of Japan. JOHN ALLYN is a film and music editor in the motion picture and television industries and also a writer/director of industrial films in the aerospace field. Mr. Allyn attended the Army Specialized Training Program at Stanford University in 1944, majoring in the Japanese language, and also attended the Army Intensive Japanese Language School at the University of Michigan in 1945, receiving a B.A. degree from the latter. During the first four years of the U.S. occupation of Japan, he worked as Pictorial Censor of the Civil Censorship Detachment of G2, SCAP, in Osaka and Tokyo. After his return to the United States he entered UCLA in Los Angeles from where he received his master's degree in Theater Arts in 1951. He is currently working toward a Ph.D degree in Theater History at UCLA, specializing in the modern Japanese theater. In addition to The Forty-Seven Ronin Story, Mr. Allyn is now preparing "The History of Modern Theater in Japan." He was born in Los Angeles where he now lives with his wife. The copy is in a very good and clean condition without markings. - (publishing text:) Readers of medieval Japanese literature; es- pecially those who have been charmed by its romance and attracted by its philosophy, will be pleased to have two more of its masterpieces made available to them in Professor Sadler's pleasant English. The Ten Foot Square Hut offers the memorable reflections of a recluse who has retired in dis- gust from a world too full of violent contrasts and cataclysms. Written some seven hundred years ago, it has an astonishing timeliness today. Tales of the Heike is a kind of Japanese equiv- alent of Tales of a Scottish Clan. Professor Sad- ler's translation presents vivid selections from the story of the Heike clan from the days of its splendour down to its tragic end, when its leaders, utterly defeated by the Minamoto clan and scorning to surrender, throw them- selves into the sea and perish. It is fortunate indeed that Professor Sadler, long a devotee of Japan and its culture, chose to bring these two classics of Japanese literature into the repertory of translations for Western readers. The late A. L. SADLER, M.A., was Professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Sydney from 1922 to 1948, at which time he became emeritus professor. He also served as Professor of Japanese at the Royal Military College of Australia. Among his numerous published works, in addition to the present volume, are The Life of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1936), Three Mil- itary Classics of China (1944), A Short History of Japan (1946), and a number of translations from Japanese literature. His Cha-No-Yu (1933) and A Short History of Japanese Architecture (1941) have recently appeared in reprint versions of the same type as the present volume. Professor Sadler made his home in England until his death in 1970. ISBN 9780804808798 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 247.

This prophetic admo-nition is taken from an old Japanese poem, but the warning might without any great stretch of the imagination be taken a ghoulish step further to include the ghosts that appear both day and night. Incense, "in ghostly Japan," is still burned in the presence of a corpse with the idea that its fragrance shields both corpse and newly parted soul from malevolent demons; and by the peasants it is often burned also to drive away goblins and the evil powers presiding over diseases. But it was also used to summon spirits as well as to banish them-a fragrance that, in Lafcadio Hearn's own words, conjured up images of "vast silent shadowed avenues leading to weird old shrines; mossed flights of worn steps ascending the temples that moulder above the clouds;-joyous tumult of festival nights;-sheeted funeral-trains gliding by in glimmer of lanterns;-murmur of household prayer in fishermen's huts on far wild coasts; and visions of desolate little graves marked only by threads of blue smoke ascending." Wizard incense had the power of calling up human spirits. In the smoke of the incense, the remem-bered face and form would appear. Here in Hearn's inimitable style are twelve ghostly stories, some of which are reminiscent of Poe's "ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir." In "A Passional Karma," the ninsomi's attention is at-tracted by two new tombs and two ghosts. "An icy trembling seized him; and the hair of his head stood up. For the face was the face of a woman long dead, and the fingers caressing were fingers of naked bone, and of the body below the waist, there was not anything. Where the eyes of the lover deluded saw youth and grace and beauty, there appeared to the eyes of the watcher horror only and the emptiness of death. another wom-an's figure, and a weirder, rose up from within the chamber, and swiftly made toward the watcher," who fled in uttermost terror. The Japanese have two kinds of ghosts proper in their folklore: the spirits of the dead, or shiryo, and the spirits of the living, or ikiryo. In this Hearn classic, you can take your choice, depending upon the type of nightmare you prefer. ISBN 9780804809658 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 270.
