Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Scarce paperback, 275 pages, NOT ex-library. A fine unread copy. Clean, bright, tight, with unmarked text and unbroken/uncreased spine; pages free of readily noticeable creasing. Cover gently shelfworn showing faint marks and fine scratches, a hint of edgewear. Price blacked-out on rear panel. Published in a limited academic edition of 270 copies. -- The purpose of this volume is to foreground and problematize the "Third" in the context of identity (the "Same") and difference (the "Other"). The tissue of the Third never ceases to grow through sameness and alterity. Reified as presence, as the Other of the Other, gaze, friendship, memory, partner, judge, etc. or dissimulated as difference, synthesis, conflict, absence, context or void, the Third inhabits the between of binarity. The realm where the Same (I, for instance) and the Other confront still another Other - the Third Other - poses questions of diverse nature: ethical, cultural, historical, ideological, mythological, mystical, discursive, narrative, theoretical, etc. This volume is an attempt not so much to answer as to expand and perhaps refine some of those questions and to explore the elusive - sometimes irrational, sometimes ineffable - realm of Thirdness. --- Contents: Introduction: Between the Same and the Other (Wojciech Kalaga); Madina Tlostanova: Shades of Otherness vs. Poles of Otherness: From "Classic" Postmodern to Other Models of Otherness; Ewa Rychter: The il y a and illeity: Traces of Thirdness in Emmanuel Levinas's Ethical Language; Slawomir Maslon: Radix, Matrix: The Third Body in Levinas's Ethics; Wojciech Kalaga: The Other as Obligation; Marek Kulisz: Thirdness as Absence; Marcin Mazurek: Thirdness of Terminal Space. Clean and bright with unmarked text and firm binding. Minor gentle signs of handling. Price blacked out on the back. -- "The cultural, aesthetic, philosophical and literary shadow-lines of the present volume move along the traces of European heritage as imprinted in the times of Plato, through the iconography of the Middle Ages up to the present time. The wish of each author is to illustrate the formation of (aesthetic, literary, cultural) European identity in the time they find most inspiring in their intellectual research. From the narratives concerning the education of the future rulers as in Plato's Republic to a contemporary revision of human rights as an expression of the battle against the constraints that restrict freedom of otherness and the ethics of alterity, the route is long and the intellectual inscapes highly stimulating." -- Contents: Introduction; Plato's Republic: The Role of Music, Mathematics and Dialectics in the Education of the Ideal Ruler / Marta Oracz; A Saint Who Never Existed: Extrahistorical Texts About St Wilgefortis / Anna Czarnowus; "A Gardyn Saw I Ful of Blosmy Bowes": The Commanding Love in La Dame à la licorne of the Musée de Cluny / Rafal Boryslawski; Marginal and the Accidental in the Interpretation of the Sacral Space / Jaroslaw Wieczorek; Traces of Otherness: The Mediterranean Culture in Walter Pater and Zbigniew Herbert / Ewa Borkowska; Music, Words, Muses, and the Aesthetics of the Plural / Maciej Nowak; Music for the Vampire: Musical Interpretation of the Myth of the Undead / Katarzyna Ancuta; W.H. Interior is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. -- A philosophical and literary reimagining of two iconic figures - Aristippus, an ancient Greek philosopher, and Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe's famous castaway. The book delves into the symbolic significance of the beach as a site of existential encounters and cultural confrontation. It explores themes of isolation, survival, identity, and the interaction between civilization and nature. By bringing together these two distinct characters, the authors reinterpret the traditional philosophical discourse of self and the 'Other,' raising questions about human resilience, the role of comfort, and the ways individuals cope with solitude and foreignness. This work invites readers to rethink classical narratives through a modern lens, blending literary analysis with philosophical reflection.…

Though it was not staged anymore, ancient drama became an important part of Byzantine education, and remained an object of research conducted by Byzantine scholars. This, alongside the fact that Byzantine writers employed motifs, quotations and allusions taken from ancient drama, prove that ancient theatre was considered to be an important part of Byzantine self-identification.…

The first is to investigate argument realization in event nominals, focusing on passive nominals, the second is to argue for the adequacy of the OT (Optimality-theoretic) framework in syntactic studies. Chapter 1 discusses basic facts concerning restrictions on the occurrence and semantic interpretation of pre-head possessives and post-head genitives in English and Polish noun phrases. Chapter 2 includes a brief introduction, the basic assumptions of Optimality Theory and illustrations are given of OT studies concerning argument structure of verbs. Chapter 3 deals with the parallelism between noun phrases and verb phrases. In Chapter 4 issues relating to the event structure of nominals are discussed. In Chapter 5 attemps are made to employ the Optimality-theoretic mechanism of aligning prominence scales to predict most optimal argument linking in selected noun phrases. Chapter 6 shows how OT prosodic and syntactic constraints interact in selecting the most felicitous structural realization of pronominal object-type arguments in Polish verbal nominals.".…
