Len Fox is a retired Sydney journalist who has been interested in the flag, and done research and published material showing its authenticity. The author is joined by a Ballarat woman, Val D'Angri, who supervised the restoration of the flag and has found that she has a personal link with the sewing of the flag during the Eureka Stockade rebellion at Ballarat in 1854. Ervin Gallery in Sydney from 23 January - 14 March 1999. The book looks at some of the ways in which Australian cartoonists have depicted themselves and their profession from the 19th-century to the present day, and compares original cartoons about being a cartoonist with ones about being a 'real' artist. The second section surveys the profession more historically. It also discusses the importance of evaluating the cartoon image rather than caption in view of the lack of control that cartoonists have had over their jokes until recently. The final chapter, and the last part of the exhibition, puts black and white cartoons and fine art prints under the one umbrella, and offers a new slant on 'black and white art' by deliberately exploiting its racial ambiguity.
