However, ultrasonic images can often be hampered by pulmonary and intestinal gas and by bony and adipose tissue. In 1956 Wild and Reid reported the first results of transrectal ultrasound of the prostate [1]. In 1976 Lutz introduced an A-mode ultrasonic probe which could be introduced via the biopsy channel of an endoscope [2]. In 1978 and 1980 Hisanaga performed echocardiography using an ultrasonic transducer attached to the tip of a flexible instrument [3, 4]. In animal studies and later on in humans Di Magno has used an echoendoscope in which a small transducer was attached at the tip of a fiberoptic endoscope [5, 6]. The purpose was to overcome the limitations of transcutaneous ultrasonography by directly approaching target lesions with a high-frequency ultrasound source via the gastroin testinallumen. The inhibitory effect of IFN was more pronounced in multilineage colony forming cells (CFU-GEMMT) of marrow cells of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) compared with stern cells of normal marrow. T cell colony formation (CFU-TL) of phi_positive T cells obtained from primary multilineage hematopoietic colonies was inhibited by rIFN. Inhibition of T cell colony formation of Phi T cells was more profound by IFN compared with secondary T cells of healthy individuals. Southern blot analysis of secondary T cells from normal individuals revealed a germ line pattern when examined for T cell receptor (TcR) gene re arrangements using the cDNA of the beta chain. Subcloned Phi T cells of one patient with CML demonstrated gene rearrangements of the TcR. We also demonstrated the disappearance of phi_positive multilineage hematopoietic colonies when marrow cells were preincubated with IFN and subsequently cultured in the presence of IFN. The cytoconversion of the Phi chromosome in metaphases obtained from individually analyzed multilineage hematopoietic colonies suggests that IFN might allow the restoration of nonclonal hematopoiesis in patients with CML. Over the past 10 years, many studies have demonstrated a relationship between endogenous opioids and the cardiovascular system under both homeostatic and pathophysiological conditions. Opioids and opiate receptors have been found in various cardioregulatory sites within the brain and spinal cord, as well as in peripheral tissues such as sympathetic ganglia, adrenal gland, and heart. Both endogenous opioids and exogenous opiates have been shown to produce potent cardiovascular effects following central nervous system or systemic administration. Opiate-receptor antagonists have been demonstrated to reverse hypotension from sepsis, hypo volemia, and anaphylaxis; such studies have been used to infer activity of endogenous opioid systems in shock. Changes in tissue concentrations of endogenous opioids and! or opiate receptors have been found after shock and hypertension, further implying a role for opioid systems in the etiology of these conditions. Endogenous opioids and opiate-receptor mechanisms have been implicated in a variety of regulat ory and dysregulatory functions including analgesia, cardiovascular regulation, shock, hypertension, traumatic spinal cord and brain injury, stroke, immune func tion, feeding behavior, diuresis, gastrointestinal motility, and respiratory control, among others. Over the past 10 years, many studies have demonstrated a relationship between endogenous opioids and the cardiovascular system under both homeostatic and pathophysiological conditions. Opioids and opiate receptors have been found in various cardioregulatory sites within the brain and spinal cord, as well as in peripheral tissues such as sympathetic ganglia, adrenal gland, and heart. Both endogenous opioids and exogenous opiates have been shown to produce potent cardiovascular effects following central nervous system or systemic administration. Opiate-receptor antagonists have been demonstrated to reverse hypotension from sepsis, hypo volemia, and anaphylaxis; such studies have been used to infer activity of endogenous opioid systems in shock. Changes in tissue concentrations of endogenous opioids and! or opiate receptors have been found after shock and hypertension, further implying a role for opioid systems in the etiology of these conditions. Neuware -Studies on the effect of recombinant human interferon (rIFN) on the growth of colonies of multi potential hematopoietic progenitors have demonstrated that IFN inhibits the growth of these cells in culture. The inhibitory effect of IFN was more pronounced in multilineage colony forming cells (CFU-GEMMT) of marrow cells of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) compared with stern cells of normal marrow. T cell colony formation (CFU-TL) of phi_positive T cells obtained from primary multilineage hematopoietic colonies was inhibited by rIFN. Inhibition of T cell colony formation of Phi T cells was more profound by IFN compared with secondary T cells of healthy individuals. Southern blot analysis of secondary T cells from normal individuals revealed a germ line pattern when examined for T cell receptor (TcR) gene re arrangements using the cDNA of the beta chain. Subcloned Phi T cells of one patient with CML demonstrated gene rearrangements of the TcR. We also demonstrated the disappearance of phi_positive multilineage hematopoietic colonies when marrow cells were preincubated with IFN and subsequently cultured in the presence of IFN. The cytoconversion of the Phi chromosome in metaphases obtained from individually analyzed multilineage hematopoietic colonies suggests that IFN might allow the restoration of nonclonal hematopoiesis in patients with CML.
