Solutions of this equation depend on 3N variables, three spatial dimensions for each electron. Ap…proxim- ing the solutions is thus inordinately challenging, and it is conventionally believed that a reduction to simpli ed models, such as those of the Hartree-Fock method or density functional theory, is the only tenable approach. This book seeks to c- vince the reader that this conventional wisdom need not be ironclad: the regularity of the solutions, which increases with the number of electrons, the decay behavior of their mixed derivatives, and the antisymmetry enforced by the Pauli principle contribute properties that allow these functions to be approximated with an order of complexity which comes arbitrarily close to that for a system of one or two electrons. The present notes arose from lectures that I gave in Berlin during the academic year 2008/09 to introduce beginning graduate students of mathematics into this subject. The remaining 352 papers were rigorously reviewed by at least three reviewers. The initial results were discussed among the reviewers and nally judged by the Program Committee Chairs. Unfortunately, most currenttechniques use offline learning algorithms, meaning that they are not able tolearn new motion patterns once the learning stage has finished.This books presents a lifelong learning approach where motion patterns can belearned incrementally, and in parallel with prediction. The approach is based ona novel extension to hidden Markov models, and the main contribution presentedin this book, called growing hidden Markov models, which gives us the ability tolearn incrementally both the parameters and the structure of the model. Theproposed approach has been extensively validated with synthetic and realtrajectory data. In our experiments our approach consistently learned motionmodels that were more compact and accurate than those produced by two otherstate-of-the-art techniques, confirming the viability of lifelong learningapproaches to build human behavior models. 176 pp. Englisch.

Since most of the real-life applications involve some kind of optimization, it has been natural to extend the use of CFD tools from ow simulation to simu- tion based optimization. However, the transition from simulation to optimization is not straight forward, it requires proper interaction between advanced CFD meth- ologies and state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. The ultimate goal is to achieve optimal solution at the cost of few ow solutions. There is growing number of - search activities to achieve this goal. This book results from my work done on simulation based optimization problems at the Department of Mathematics, University of Trier, and reported in my postd- toral thesis ('Habilitationsschrift') accepted by the Faculty-IV of this University in 2008. The focus of the work has been to develop mathematical methods and - gorithms which lead to ef cient and high performance computational techniques to solve such optimization problems in real-life applications. Systematic development of the methods and algorithms are presented here.
