Frisch, who in his publications 'Correlation and Scatter Analysis in Statistical Variables' (1929) and 'Statistical Confluence Analysis by means of Complete Regression Systems' (1934) first pointed out the complications t…hat arise if one applies regression analysis to variables among which several independent linear relations exist. Should these relationships be exact, then there exist two closely related solutions for this problem, viz. 1. The estimation of 'stable' linear combinations of coefficients, the so-called estimable functions. 2. The dropping of the wen-known condition of unbiasedness of the estimators. This leads to minimum variance minimum bias estimators. This last solution is generalised in this book for the case of a model consisting of several equations. In econometrics however, the relations among variables are nearly always approximately linear so that one cannot apply one of the solutions mentioned above, because in that case the matrices used in these methods are, although ill-conditioned, always of full rank. Approximating these matrices by good-conditioned ones of the desired rank, it is possible to apply these estimation methods. In order to get an insight in the consequences of this approximation a simulation study has been carried out for a two-equation model. Two Stage Least Squares estimators and estimators found with the aid of the above mentioned estimation method have been compared. Its very sophistication, however, leads it to abstract from social phenomena such as norms, institutions, power, conflict and social change. Thus the manifest influence of sociological variables on the course of economic processes remains hidden. Dominating this book as a drumbeat is the conviction held by the several authors that a c1earer grasp of the current problems may be obtained if economists and sociologists are prepared to co-operate more closely. As the title conveys, I have concentrated on the financial side of the problem without neglecting altogether the important political, social and human aspects. I have primarily dealt with the problems of capital formation, capital transfer, capital employment and the associated balance of payments considerations. The attempt is made to set out in an integrat ed analysis the problems of capital exports to less developed countries both from the point of view of the creditor and of the debtor, be they countries or individuals. It traces out a 'systematic' of law-enforce…ment assassination in Northern Tier Mexico, showing how the selective, often sequential, hits by cartels on chiefs in border towns and along key drug-trafficking corridors has proven an effective strategy by organized crime elements to serve several goals: (1) to retaliate for federal, state and local prosecution, (2) to try and neutralize police chiefs, (3) to achieve intermittent local governance and/or to seed corrupt police chiefs at the municipal level, and, (4) to reduce local governmental capacity to obtain greater freedom for movement of goods. It is argued that the tactical advantage of organized crime elements gives them relatively easy physical access to law enforcement targets and thus is thus one prime element facilitating the use of assassination as a strategy. U.S. and Mexican legal, political and judicial institutions have not been able to adequately restrict opportunity for law-enforcement assassinations. The inability to reduce access to weapons and officials, to increase security for police personnel, to reduce corruption and punish offenders sets the stage for the assassination of local law enforcement. Yet, it is the goals of organized crime elements (to clear drug-smuggling routes and to try and gain more pliant governance at the municipal level) that ultimately motivate such killings. 128 pp. Englisch.

The preceding three Sessions were held at Stubice Toplice, in Yugoslavia (19…74), Zeist, in the Netherlands (1976) and, again in Yugoslavia, at Opatija (1978). The fourth Session was originally planned for May 1980. On the eve of the meeting, the then President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the late Marshall J .B. Tito, passed away. On hearing the news of the Marshall's death, the Organizing Committee of the Hague-Zagreb Colloquium immediately decided that the Session should not then be held. The postponement lasted, in fact, a whole year: the fourth Session was convened at Eernewoude in May 1981. For the Eernewoude Session the formula that had produced such excellent results in the previous conferences was maintained. Four topics of international trade law were thoroughly discussed on the basis of reports submitted by scholars from the various legal systems represented at the conference. Apart from the Yugoslav and Dutch participants, scholars from the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany, Belgium and Norway took part in the discussions, be it in the capacity of reporter, of chairman or as expert in the field covered by the Colloquium: the law of international trade. Although eusociality is apparently confined to insects, it has evolved a number of times in a single order of insects, the Hymenoptera. W. Hamilton's hypothesis, that the unusual haplodiploid mechanism of sex determination in the Hymenoptera singled this order out, still seems to have great explanatory power in the study of social ants. We believe that the direction, indeed confinement, of social altruism to close kin is the mainspring of social life in an ant colony, and the alternative explanatory schemes of, for example, parental manipu lation, should rightly be seen to operate within a system based on the selective support of kin. To control the flow of resources within their colony all its members resort to manipulations of their nestmates: parental manipulation of offspring is only one facet of a complex web of manipul ation, exploitation and competition for resources within the colony. The political intrigues extend outside the bounds of the colony, to insects and plants which have mutualistic relations with ants. In eusociality some individuals (sterile workers) do not pass their genes to a new generation directly. In accord with its title, this book focuses on research to develop the knowledge-base for preventive medicine, which mainly is knowledge about the causal origin -etilogy, etiogenesis - of illness. It first illustrates how wanting this knowledge still is, despite much research; and it then aims to guide the reader to more productive etiogenetic research. This book places much emphasis on the need to assure relevance by principles-guided objects design for the studies, which now remains conspicuously absent from epidemiologists' concerns. And as for methods design, this book exposes the fallacies in the still-common 'cohort' and 'case-control' studies, defines the essentials of all etiogenetic studies, and then addresses the true options for design in this framework of shared essentials. A good deal of attention is also given to the still commonly-held, very major, twin fallacies that screening for an illness is a preventive intervention, to be studied by randomized trials, and that research on it can imply rational guidelines or recommendations regarding decisions about the screening. While Miettinen already is regarded as 'the father of modern epidemiology,' he now appears to have become the father also of post-modern epidemiology, where 'epidemiology' still means epidemiological research. 200 pp. Englisch.

In this discussion, however,… the term will not be defined until after the circumstances that spawned its existence have been summarized. This discussion will revolve around two facets of mechanical system design, that of structural integrity and wear integrity. In the not too distant past, the evolutionary process of machine design had in most cases attained a stage of development where the structural integrity of a system was ensured. Simply stated, this means that the machine components would not 'break. ' However, at this development phase, little emphasis was placed on component wear integrity. This meant that although machinery components would not break, they would be subject to high wear/wear-out rates. Frequent component replacements were used in order to compensate for this situation. A 'throw away' philosophy was thus adopted. This philosophy, however, resulted in many undesirable secondary effects. Mechanical systems were characterized by expensive logistics, costly maintenance, limited availability, limited lives, and substantial energy consumption. This energy consumption resulted from primary effects of high equipment frictional levels {causing the high wear rate) and such secondary effects as spare parts production and transportation. As a result of these factors, the 'throw-away' philosophy was a very vulnerable luxury. At the time when the decision for this change was taken, the cost of setting the ma…nuscript in type was becoming so high as to render the cost of individual subscription pro hibitive. At that time automatie typing methods giving justified lines, etc. for photo-offset reproduction did not offer any saving over type setting, but hand typing of the manuscripts could give a considerable saving in production costs. In the belief that a publication that is too expensive to buy is of little value, the format has been changed sacrificing elegance to availability. The new format does not lead to increased length of the volumes since the information content of the typed and typeset pages is practically identical. How ever, the amount of work to be reported demands the eventual separation of Structure Reports into two volumes, A. Metals and Inorganic and B. Organic. It was convenient to introduce this change also at Volume 30, and with Volume 31 further to restriet the publication of crystal data, so that from 1966 onwards the reports deal almost entirely with complete structure determinations only. In the past the aim of Structure Reports has been to present critical reports on all work of crystallographic structural interest, whether it is derived directly from X-ray, electron or neutron diffraction, or even indirectly from other experiments. 496 pp. Englisch.

There has, in recent years, been renewed interest in theories that connect up gravi…tation and particle physics, and in the astrophysical consequences of such theories. Some of these accounts involve a time-variation of the Newtonian gravitational parameter, G. In this respect, the present book may be regarded as a companion to my Cosmology and Geophysics (Hilger, Bristol, 1978). There is some overlap as regards the discussion of G-variability, but the emphasis in the present book is on astrophysics while the emphasis in the other one is on geophysics. The subject is a very broad one indeed, and in giving a review of it I have adopted a somewhat unorthodox way of presenting the material involved. The main reason for this is that a review of such a wide subject should aim at two levels: the level of the person who is interested in it, and the level of the person who is professionally engaged in research into it. To achieve such a two-level coverage, I have split the text up into two parts. The first part (Chapters 1-7) represents a relatively non-technical overview of the subject, while the second part (Chapters 8-11) represents a technical examination of the most important aspects of non-Einsteinian gravitational theory and its relation to astrophysics. 204 pp. Englisch.

The tre…atment and disposal of wastes has become one of the most important problems facing mankind. This is a problem which will not disappear, and could even worsen, if it is not faced with resolution by all the main parties involved: consumers, governments, producers and scientists. Some wastes could be reused, producing some economic return which could pay for the waste-treatment process. In the best of cases, this could become an economically attractive recycling operation. However, in many situations, waste treatment is considered to be an unproductive process which entails additional costs to an otherwise productive operation. Methods for the removal and purification of wastes (including those considered to be 'toxic wastes', the most dreaded form of pollution), if developed at all, suffer from serious limitations. Two of these are the high energy input into the process and, after the contaminants have been removed, the lingering problem of what to do with them, as they will then exist as some kind of concentrate. The ideal solution is none other than a natural, biological process to degrade wastes. Fortunately, mankind is increasingly choosing that option, as exemplified by the general acceptance of the role of biotechnology in modern society. 436 pp. Englisch.

While high-resolution geophysical surveys are routinely performed offshore today, this has been so only since the late 1960s. High-resolution geophysical methods are employed in the offshore environment to obtain a comprehensive picture of the sea-floor mor phology and underlying shallow stratigraphy. The purpose of the survey methods is to assist in the design and installation of bottom-supported structures such as drilling and production platforms and pipelines. Drilling structures and pipelines of steel and/or concrete have become behemoths with respect to their size and the complexity of their design in order to withstand, for periods of up to twenty-five years, an extremely harsh environment, including storm waves, strong currents, unstable sea floor conditions, and great water depths. It is therefore of paramount importance that the geometry and physical properties of the sea floor be well understood in order to provide an adequate foundation for the design lives of such structures. On land, engineering foundation data usually may be obtained by visual field inspection and shallow borehole information, but offshore the presence of the water column places certain constraints on geoengineering investigations. High-resolution geophysical methods employed in the acquisition of geoengineering data offshore are defined as the use of seismic sources and receivers that operate at acoustic frequencies greater than 100 Hz. 280 pp. Englisch.

We were very pleased to see old friends back and to wellcome new guests who by their inspiring talks contributed fundamentally to tracing new paths for the future development of this research area. The Conference was organized in Deinze, a small rural town in the vicinity of the University town Gent. It was hosted by De Ceder, a vacation and seminar center in a green area, a typical landscape of Flanders's 'plat pays' . The Conference was attended by 61 participants coming from 18 countries; there were 10 main talks on invitation, 37 contributions accepted by the Organizing Com mittee and a poster session. There was also a book display of Kluwer Academic Publishers.
