Frisch, who in his publications 'Correlation and Scatter Analysis in Statistical Variables' (1929) and 'Statistical Confluence Analysis by means of Complete Regression Systems' (1934) first pointed out the complications t…hat arise if one applies regression analysis to variables among which several independent linear relations exist. Should these relationships be exact, then there exist two closely related solutions for this problem, viz. 1. The estimation of 'stable' linear combinations of coefficients, the so-called estimable functions. 2. The dropping of the wen-known condition of unbiasedness of the estimators. This leads to minimum variance minimum bias estimators. This last solution is generalised in this book for the case of a model consisting of several equations. In econometrics however, the relations among variables are nearly always approximately linear so that one cannot apply one of the solutions mentioned above, because in that case the matrices used in these methods are, although ill-conditioned, always of full rank. Approximating these matrices by good-conditioned ones of the desired rank, it is possible to apply these estimation methods. In order to get an insight in the consequences of this approximation a simulation study has been carried out for a two-equation model. Two Stage Least Squares estimators and estimators found with the aid of the above mentioned estimation method have been compared. The results of this study seem to be favourable for this new method. 112 pp. Englisch.

The preceding three Sessions were held at Stubice Toplice, in Yugoslavia (19…74), Zeist, in the Netherlands (1976) and, again in Yugoslavia, at Opatija (1978). The fourth Session was originally planned for May 1980. On the eve of the meeting, the then President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the late Marshall J .B. Tito, passed away. On hearing the news of the Marshall's death, the Organizing Committee of the Hague-Zagreb Colloquium immediately decided that the Session should not then be held. The postponement lasted, in fact, a whole year: the fourth Session was convened at Eernewoude in May 1981. For the Eernewoude Session the formula that had produced such excellent results in the previous conferences was maintained. Four topics of international trade law were thoroughly discussed on the basis of reports submitted by scholars from the various legal systems represented at the conference. Apart from the Yugoslav and Dutch participants, scholars from the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany, Belgium and Norway took part in the discussions, be it in the capacity of reporter, of chairman or as expert in the field covered by the Colloquium: the law of international trade. In this discussion, however,… the term will not be defined until after the circumstances that spawned its existence have been summarized. This discussion will revolve around two facets of mechanical system design, that of structural integrity and wear integrity. In the not too distant past, the evolutionary process of machine design had in most cases attained a stage of development where the structural integrity of a system was ensured. Simply stated, this means that the machine components would not 'break. ' However, at this development phase, little emphasis was placed on component wear integrity. This meant that although machinery components would not break, they would be subject to high wear/wear-out rates. Frequent component replacements were used in order to compensate for this situation. A 'throw away' philosophy was thus adopted. This philosophy, however, resulted in many undesirable secondary effects. Mechanical systems were characterized by expensive logistics, costly maintenance, limited availability, limited lives, and substantial energy consumption. This energy consumption resulted from primary effects of high equipment frictional levels {causing the high wear rate) and such secondary effects as spare parts production and transportation. As a result of these factors, the 'throw-away' philosophy was a very vulnerable luxury. During the last fifteen or so years, environmental factors with respect to mechanical system operation have changed 2 drastically. 792 pp. Englisch.

Some of these accounts involve a time-variation of the Newtonian gravitational parameter, G. In this respect, the present book may be regarded as a companion to my Cosmology and Geophysics (Hilger, Bristol, 1978). There is some overlap as regards the discussion of G-variability, but the emphasis in the present book is on astrophysics while the emphasis in the other one is on geophysics. The subject is a very broad one indeed, and in giving a review of it I have adopted a somewhat unorthodox way of presenting the material involved. The main reason for this is that a review of such a wide subject should aim at two levels: the level of the person who is interested in it, and the level of the person who is professionally engaged in research into it. To achieve such a two-level coverage, I have split the text up into two parts. The first part (Chapters 1-7) represents a relatively non-technical overview of the subject, while the second part (Chapters 8-11) represents a technical examination of the most important aspects of non-Einsteinian gravitational theory and its relation to astrophysics. 204 pp. Englisch.

The tre…atment and disposal of wastes has become one of the most important problems facing mankind. This is a problem which will not disappear, and could even worsen, if it is not faced with resolution by all the main parties involved: consumers, governments, producers and scientists. Some wastes could be reused, producing some economic return which could pay for the waste-treatment process. In the best of cases, this could become an economically attractive recycling operation. However, in many situations, waste treatment is considered to be an unproductive process which entails additional costs to an otherwise productive operation. Methods for the removal and purification of wastes (including those considered to be 'toxic wastes', the most dreaded form of pollution), if developed at all, suffer from serious limitations. Two of these are the high energy input into the process and, after the contaminants have been removed, the lingering problem of what to do with them, as they will then exist as some kind of concentrate. The ideal solution is none other than a natural, biological process to degrade wastes. Fortunately, mankind is increasingly choosing that option, as exemplified by the general acceptance of the role of biotechnology in modern society. 436 pp. Englisch.

We were very pleased to see old friends back and to wellcome new guests who by their inspiring talks contributed fundamentally to tracing new paths for the future development of this research area. The Conference was organized in Deinze, a small rural town in the vicinity of the University town Gent. It was hosted by De Ceder, a vacation and seminar center in a green area, a typical landscape of Flanders's 'plat pays' . The Conference was attended by 61 participants coming from 18 countries; there were 10 main talks on invitation, 37 contributions accepted by the Organizing Com mittee and a poster session. There was also a book display of Kluwer Academic Publishers. Poincare, A. M. Lyapunov, N. M. Krylov and N. N. Bogolyubov. Professor Demetrios Magiros, a widely known scientist in the theories of oscillations and nonlinear differential equations, has devoted his numerous works to this significant part of modern physical science. The impact of his work on mathematical statistics has been so extraordinary that it has completely changed the character of… some fields of this science. Some of his ideas have become a part of the common statistical conSClOusness. Hajek's contribution to statistics includes research in the theory of rank tests, parametric estimation, probability sampling, statistical inference in stochastic processes and various other specializations. His results were always of fundamental character for the corresponding field and they continue to stimulate further research and progress. For proving the results, he developed original methods which are now commonly used for the solution of many related problems. Hajek was an enthusiastic mathematician; the secret of his success was in his love for the subject and in his great sense for practical applications; just practical problems provided him the source of excellent mathematical problems and ideas. We see the best way of commemorating Jaroslav Hajek in the arrangement of the present volume which collects papers of authors whose work is related to Hajek's work and who were friends of him. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The basic partial differential equations for the stresses and displacements in clas sical three dimensional elasticity theory can be set up in three ways: (1) to solve for the displacements first and then the stresses; (2) to solve… for the stresses first and then the displacements; and (3) to solve for both stresses and displacements simultaneously. These three methods are identified in the literature as (1) the displacement method, (2) the stress or force method, and (3) the combined or mixed method. Closed form solutions of the partial differential equations with their complicated boundary conditions for any of these three methods have been obtained only in special cases. In order to obtain solutions, various special methods have been developed to determine the stresses and displacements in structures. The equations have been reduced to two and one dimensional forms for plates, beams, and trusses. By neglecting the local effects at the edges and ends, satisfactory solutions can be obtained for many case~. The procedures for reducing the three dimensional equations to two and one dimensional equations are described in Chapter 1, Volume 1, where the various approximations are pointed out. 740 pp. Englisch.

During the last decades, great progress has been achieved as the result of space missions to planets and small bodies - as teroids and… comets - and improved remote-sensing methods, as well as due to refined techniques of laboratory measurements and a rapid progress in theoretical studies, involving the development of various astrophysical and geophysical models. These models are based, in particular, on the approach of comparative planetology becoming a powerful tool in revealing evolu tionary processes which have been shaping the planets since their origin. Comets and asteroids, being identified as remnants of planetary formation, serve as a clue to the reconstruction of Solar System history because they encapsulated the primordial material from which the planets were built up. At the same time, these interplanetary carriers of original matter and mes sengers from the past, being triggered by dynamical processes well outside our neighboring space, were responsible for numerous catastrophic events when impacting on the planets and thus causing dramatic changes of their natural conditions. In the crossroads of astronomy and geophysics, recent years have seen a growing understanding of the importance of collisional processes through out the history of the Solar System and, therefore, the necessity to get more insight into the problem of interactions of planets and small bodies. 372 pp. Englisch.

In fact, the design of most man made objects, ranging from space-ships and long-span bridges to tennis rackets and artificial organs, can be improved considerably if human intuition is enhanced by means of computer-aided, systematic decisions. In analysing highly complex structural systems in practice, discretization is un avoidable because closed-form analytical solutions are only available for relatively simple, idealized problems. To keep discretization errors to a minimum, it is de sirable to use a relatively large number of elements. Modern computer technology enables us to analyse systems with many thousand degrees of freedom. In the optimization of structural systems, however, most currently available methods are restricted to at most a few hundred variables or a few hundred active constraints. 1244 pp. Englisch.
