Inevitably geographers view other disciplines through their own cultural filter, and even a benevolent view remains 'ethnocentric'. It was in order to avoid such ethnocentricity that Femand Braudel called for more unity among the social sciences in 1958 : «l wish the social sciences . . . would stop discussing their respective differences so much . . . and instead look for common ground . . . on which to reach their first agreement. Personally I would call these ways: quantification, spatial awareness and 'longue duree'». In its place at the center of the social sciences, geography reduces all social reality to its spatial dimensions. Unfortunately, as a discipline, it considers itself all too often to be in a world of its own. There is a need in France for a figure like Vidal de la Blanche who could refocus attention away from issues of time and space, towards space and social reality. Geographic research will only take a step forward once it learns to address the problems facing all the sciences.

Robust control design deals with the question of how to develop such controllers for system models with uncertainty. In many cases dynamic models can be expressed in terms oflinear, time invariant differential equations or transfer functions.

Recent advances in chip-level synthesis have made it possible to synthesize application-specific circuits under strict timing constraints. This work advances the state of the art by formulating the problem of system synthesis using both application-specific as well as reprogrammable components, such as off-the-shelf processors. Timing constraints are used to determine what part of the system functionality must be delegated to dedicated application-specific hardware while the rest is delegated to software that runs on the processor. This co-synthesis of hardware and software from behavioral specifications makes it possible to realize real-time embedded systems using off-the-shelf parts and a relatively small amount of application-specific circuitry that can be mapped to semi-custom VLSI such as gate arrays. The ability to perform detailed analysis of timing performance provides the opportunity of improving the system definition by creating better phototypes. Co-Synthesis of Hardware and Software for Digital Embedded Systems is of interest to CAD researchers and developers who want to branch off into the expanding field of hardware/software co-design, as well as to digital system designers who are interested in the present power and limitations of CAD techniques and their likely evolution.

Many within the temporal database research community perceived that the time had come to consolidate approaches to temporal data models an…d calculus based query languages, to achieve a consensus query language and associated data model upon which future research can be based. While there were many query language proposals, with a diversity of language and modeling constructs, common themes kept resurfacing. However, the community was quite frag mented, with each research project being based on a particular and different set of assumptions and approaches. Often these assumptions were not germane to the research per se, but were made simply because the research required a data model or query language with certain characteristics, with the partic ular one chosen rather arbitrarily. It would be better in such circumstances for research projects to choose the same language. Unfortunately, no existing language had attracted a following large enough to become the one of choice. In April, 1992 Richard Snodgrass circulated a white paper that proposed that a temporal extension to SQL be produced by the research community. Shortly thereafter, the temporal database community organized the 'ARPA/NSF In ternational Workshop on an Infrastructure for Temporal Databases,' which was held in Arlington, TX, in June, 1993.

It took place at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from August 27-31, 1995. This was the fifteenth annual Crypto conference; all have been held at UCSB. For the second time, proceedings were available at the conference. The General Chair, Stafford Tavares, was responsible for local organization and registration. The Program Committee considered 151 papers and selected 36 for pres- tation. There were also two invited talks. Robert Morris, Sr. gave a talk on 'Ways of Losing Information,' which included some non-cryptographic means of leaking secrets that are often overlooked by cryptographers. The second talk, 'Cryptography - Myths and Realities,' was given by Adi Shamir, this year's IACR Distinguished Lecturer. Shamir is the second person to receive this honor, the first having been Gus Simmons at Crypto '94. These proceedings contain revised versions of the 36 contributed talks. Each paper was sent to at least three members of the program committee for c- ments. Revisions were not checked on their scientific aspects. Some authors will write final versions of their papers for publication in refereed journals. Of course, the authors bear full responsibility for the contents of their papers. 480 pp. Englisch.

It is designed for a comprehensive one-year course in linear algebra (1…12 lecture hours) for mathematics majors. Therefore, I assume that the student already has a certain amount of mathematical background - including set theory, mathematical induction, basic analytic geometry, and elementary calculus - as wellas a modicum of mathematical sophistication. My intention is to provide not only a solid basis in the abstract theory of linear algebra, but also to provide examples of the application of this theory to other branches ofmathematics and computer science. Thus, for example, the introduction of finite fields is dictated by the needs of students studying algebraic coding theory as an immediate followup to their linear algebra studies. Many of the students studying linear algebra either are familiar with the care and feeding of computers before they begin their studies or are simultaneously en rolled in an introductory computer science course. Therefore, consideration of the more computational aspects of linear algebra - such as the solution of systems of linear equations and the calculation of eigenvalues - is delayed until all students are assumed able to write computer programs for this purpose. Many problems still have to be solved, and hence the field is a very active area for research and development. This book represents results of the sixth in a well established series of international workshops on Visualization in Scien tific Computing organized by the EUROGRAPHICS Association in collaboration with CRS4 (Center for Advanced Studies, Research and Development in Sardinia), held from May 3 to May 5,1995, in Chia, Italy. The thirteen contributions selected for this volume cover a wide range of topics, ranging from detailed algorithmic studies to searches for new metaphors. A rough di vision can be made into the parts interaction, irregular meshes, volume rendering, and applications. Interaction in three dimensions is a challenging area for research. The use of three dimensional user interfaces for more natural manipulation of three-dimensional data and their visualization is natural, but is far from trivial to realize. Pang et al. investigate the use of common objects such as spray cans and carving knives as metaphors for visualiza tion tools, in order to provide an intuitive and natural three dimensional user interface. Gibson uses a voxel-based data representation, not only for visualization, but also for physical modeling of objects.
