Realising the importance of such needs, this volume contains contributions to the theory and practice of forecasting mortality in the relatively favourab…le circumstances in developed countries of Western Europe. In this context techniques from mathematical statistics and econometrics can provide useful descriptions of past mortality. The naive forecast obtained by extrapolating a fitted model may give as good a forecast as any but forecasting by extrapolation requires careful justification since it assumes the prolongation of historical conditions. On the other hand, whilst it is generally accepted that scientific and other advances will continue to impact on mortality, perhaps dramatically so, it is impossible to quantify more than the outline of future consequences with a strong degree of confidence. The decision to modify an extrapolation of a model fitted to historical data (or conversely choosing not to modify it) in order to obtain a forecast is therefore strongly influenced by subjective and judgmental elements, with the quality of the latter dependent on demographic, epidemiological and indeed perhaps more general considerations. The thread running through the book reflects therefore the necessity of integrating demographic, epidemiological, and statistical factors to obtain an improvement in the prediction of mortality.

Then, the book proposes a top-down design approach for implementing high-performance low-power and low-area CMOS pipelined A/D converters through: The conception, development and implementation of self-calibrated techniques to extend the linearity of some critical stages in the architecture of pipelined ADCs. The detailed analysis and modelling of some major non-idealities that limit the physical realisation of pipelined ADCs and the proposal, development and implementation of design methodologies to support systematic design of optimised instances of these converters which combine maximum performance with minimum power dissipation and minimum area occupation. £/LIST£ Several implementations together with consistent measured results are presented. In particular, a practical realisation of a low-power 14-bit 5MS/s CMOS pipelined ADC with background analogue self-calibration is fully described. The proposed approach is fully in line with the best practice regarding the design of mixed-signal integrated circuits. On the one hand, drawbacks of currently existing solutions are overcame through innovative strategies and, on the other hand, the expert knowledge is packaged and made available for re-usability by the community of circuit designers. Finally, feasibility of the strategies and the associated encapsulated knowledge isgranted through experimental validation of working silicon. Systematic Design for Optimisation of Pipelined ADCs serves as an excellent reference for analogue design engineers especially designers of low-power CMOS A/D converters. The book may also be used as a text for advanced reading on the subject.

A possible defense is that we are going to do so in the framework of a two-sector model where the main featureS of each sector depend on the characteristics of the goods produced by the sector itself. The conventional wisdom suggests that the problem of (dis )aggregation in growth and business cycle theory is basically a quantitative one: the model should consider as many sectors, goods, and agents as necessary to provide a sufficiently rich picture, the upper bound obviously resulting from the tractability of the problem. In this attitude the same equilibrium (or diseqUilibrium) assumptions generally hold true throughout all sectors. Here we want to prove the relevance of an alternative approach: we look at the qualitative differences across sectors and at the peculiarities of each market as at the determinants of the economic dynamics. We have learned that there…is a clear correlation between the magnitude of the inciting traumatic event and the degree of inflammatory dysbalance. The immunoinflammatory disintegration comprises a simultaneous col lapse of the otherwise very smoothly balanced pro- and antiinflammatory vectors of cytokine regulation. Most recently, we understood that it is predominantly the dysregulation of antiinflammatory mediators that plays a pivotal role for the phenomenon of trauma-induced depression or paralysis of cell-mediated immune responses. The substantial intellectual and logistic investments of numerous investi gators towards understanding the biology of sepsis inevitably lead us towards a rewarding status in terms of reaching spheres of clinical relevance. From the evolutionary collection of a multitude of ex-vivo and in-vivo immuno mechanistic parameters, some were found to represent most significant bio logical markers to support the clinician to characterize better the severity of inflammatory illness and to predict outcome. Chapter one of this book, authored by G. Grass and E.A.M. Neugebauer, analyses elegantly our current knowledge on the assessment of the immuno logical status in terms of risk and prognosis of sepsis. 172 pp. Englisch.

The workshop included 9 invited presentations and 39 contributed pres- tations. The PARA 2000 meeting began with a one-day tutorial on OpenMP programming led by Timothy Mattson. This was followed by a three-day wor- hop. The rst three PARA workshops were held at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Lyngby (1994, 1995, and 1996). Following PARA'96, an - ternational steering committee for the PARA meetings was appointed and the committee decided that a workshop should take place every second year in one of the Nordic countries. The 1998 workshop was held at Ume a University, Sweden. One important aim of these workshops is to strengthen the ties between HPC centers, academia, and industry in the Nordic countries as well as worldwide. Therefore Therefore the error bounds are not really available in practice since their com putation requires more or less the exact solution of the original problem. During the last years research in different areas has been intensified in or der to overcome these problems. As a result applications to different concrete problems were obtained. The LEDA-library (K. Mehlhorn et al.) offers a collection of data types for combinatorical problems. In a series of applications, where floating point arith metic fails, reliable results are delivered. Interesting examples can be found in classical geometric problems. At the Imperial College in London was introduced a simple principle for 'exact arithmetic with real numbers' (A. Edalat et al.), which uses certain nonlinear transformations.
