Contributions were accepted on the understanding that the editors could make certain changes leading towards a uniformity of style but accepting as a priority the importance of early publication, if necessary at the expense of stylistic perfection. Editorial notes have been inserted at infrequent intervals, sometimes to summarise discussions and at others in an attempt to clarify certain issues or to highlight conflicting opinions. Although the work has been divided amongst the editors and co editors it is only proper to acknowledge that the major role in collating and in correcting much of the material has fallen on Mrs MAske who has also typed the manuscript. This has led to a much wider subject coverage than would otherwise have been possible. The discussion sessions which followed these review talks were extremely valuable and almost all the participants played an active role. Essentially all of the verbal contributions presented at this ASI were subsequently put into written format, which is why these proceedings are so extensive. ~hey do, however, provide an up-to-date summary of DNA synthesis in a wide variety of subjects with many of the remaining problems clearly expressed. The editing of these contributions has been essentially confined to alterations in style and presentation. We have taken some liberties in the re-organization of the papers into related sections. We express our thanks to those who helped organize the ASI and to the session conveners who attempted to confine and contain those who became too verbose. We are indebted to NATO, Scientific Affairs Division for the financial support that made this ASI possible. Finally, we express our gratitude to Miss Brenda Marriott. The purpose of that symposium was to put together our current knowledge of the cause of pituitary tumors and discuss the diagnostic evaluation and management that was now appropriate, in light of the rapid advances that had taken place so recently in this area. Those of our colleagues who had presented papers at the symposium, as well as a number of others, were invited to contribute to this volume, which should serve as a presentation of the 'state of the art' on all aspects of pitu itary tumors. We felt that such a book would be of value to endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and pathologists who are involved in the investigation or care of patients with pituitary disorders. For a number of reasons, a review of pituitary adenomas seems particu larly timely. Rapid advances have taken place coincidentally in the fields of neurosurgery, neuroendocrinology, neuroradiology, neuropathology, and neuropharmacology. Four of these research areas were then selected for their special importance in understanding physical processes on the ocean floor. In some of these, a great wealth of data has accumulated over the past two or three decades, but controversy exists in the interpretation of the results. In others, new techniques have re cently been devised that could lead to the collection and synthesis of new information. There was yet a third area in which little study had been undertaken and the results available appeared of great potential importance. The latter subject constitutes the title of this volume. To assess the information available and to facilitate plans for further research in the fields of interest that had been identified, the U.S. Office of Naval Research sponsored four symposia. The first was held in November 1972 at the University of California Con ference Center, Lake Arrowhead. The title of the symposium was 'Natural Gases in Marine Sediments and Their Mode of Distribution'. Twenty lectures were presented over a three-day period. All but two participants at this symposium subsequently submitted papers, which are published in this volume. In addition, Dr. K.O. It is now eminently clear that.the bulk of human cancers are related to one of several types of environmental exposure. Of the environmental hazards, chemicals are among the best characterized carcinogens. However, how chemicals induce cancer is still poorly understood. Because of the magnitude of the problem and the ob vious need for a much more critical scientific analysis of the process by which cancer is induced (carcinogenesis), it was highly desirable to expose a greater number of scientists with varying background to some of the latest thinking in chemical carcino genesis. Barriers of specialized terminologies form, which cause scientists to lose contact with their colleagues, and differences in points-of-view emerge which hinder the unification of knowledge among the various disciplines, and even within a given discipline. As a result, the scientist, and especially the student, is in many instances offered fragmented glimpses of subjects that are funda mentally synthetic and that should be treated in their own right. Such seems to be the case of the liquid state. But important environmental questions associated with the application ofthis new biotechnology to soils are still to be resolved. The countries represented were Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Czechoslovakia, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MFI) , the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRST) , the Regional Sicilian Government (ERS), and the Weizmann Institute of Science. The programme of the School was mainly devoted to a review of the very low energy corner where we are all working at present, and to a discussion of what the future could be for subnuclear physics before the end of this century. On the theoretical front, the highlight of this Course was the lectures by S. Adler on the non-local U(2) gauge theory. The non locality at the colour-level should disappear at the colour-singlet level -- where all particles we know of exist and should the- fore not scare those who do not like the idea of giving up this basic principle of quantum field theory: locality. First as dyestuffs, meaicinals and tannins and, much later, because of their potential use in examining the systematic and evolutionary relationships of plants, and their impli cation in defence against both herbivores and phytopatho gens. It is not surprising, therefore, that the first formally organised Society of Phytochemists, the Plant Phenolics group which was established in England in 1958, should have devoted themselves to an intensive study of these compounds. They were quickly followed by a like group in North America. But, by the mid-1960's, it was obvious to the members of both societies that their net was spread wider than just phenolic compounds and in 1965 both adopted a more appropriate name, The Phytochemical Society (now Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE), and The Phytochemical Society of North America (PSNA) respec tively). On the whole, one could divide the huge amount of recent investigations into two parts although there is much overlap bet ween these regimes, namely investigations on magnetic exchange interactions constrained to mainly one or two dimensions and, secondly, work done on Id metallic solids or linear chain compounds with Id delocalized electrons. There is, of course, overlap from one extreme case to the other with these solids and in some rare cases both phenomena are studied on one and the same crystal. In fact, however, most of the scientific groups in this area could be associated roughly with one of these categories and,in addition, a separation between theoreticians and experimentalists in each of these groups leads to a further splitting of interests although many theories about these solids have been tested by experimenta lists. Nevertheless, more cooperation and understanding between scientists working on low-dimensional cooperative phenomena should appreciably stimulate further development. With a better inderdis ciplinary understanding, new ideas could possibly help chemists in synthesizing tailor-cut solids. The developments have been particularly impressive in two areas : the di-electronic recombination of electrons with ions and the collisional processes of mUltiply charged ions. Multiply charged ions, on the other hand, have become popular, thanks to the development of powerful ion sources. This circumstance, together with a pressing demand from thermonuclear research for ionisation and charge exchange cross sections, has triggered systematic experimental investigations and new theoretical studies, which have contributed to considerably enlarge, over the last five years, our understanding of the collisional processes of multiply charged ions. Many years later, in 1940, Pauling proffered the concept that antibodies comprised a single poly peptide chain and that each end of the protein could form an antigen-binding site. Burnet tried to explain the diversity of antibody specificity by hypothesizing that it was cell-derived. These hypotheses probably have led to as much or more experimentation and discussion than any other of the many conjectures set forth to explain immunity on a molecular and cellular basis. Extensive investigations, initially stimulated by these propositions, proved Pauling's notion incorrect. In its demise, however, the multichain structure of the immunoglobulins was realized. In retrospect it be comes obvious that Ehrlich's idea, though not correct, was borne of amazing logic and cognition. Expansion of Burnet's theory seems to be occurring presently; much excitement is engendered by the finding of cell-bound immunoglobulin receptors. Ouring the preceding dozen years, immunochemists have accumulated enormous quantities of data. Though there is so much yet to be done, as a result of this research one may now discuss antigen-binding sites in relation to the protein's primary structure. The turning of technology away from an onward rush, regardless, to progress which takes into account repercussions of techno logical activity on the environment, and the consequent need for a reduction and then termination of the injection of CO into 2 the atmosphere (greenhouse effect), together with a reckoning with air and water pollution in general, ensures a long-term need for advances in a basic knowledge of electrochemical systems, an increased technological use of which seems to arise from the environmental necessities. The treatment has been in terms of classical mechanics, only tenable while inadequate questions were asked concerning the behavior of the electron in the interfacial transfer. The topic of the symposium, 'The Shikimic Acid Pathway - Recent Advances', was especially appropriate for this, the Silver Anniversary of the Society because of the many natural products derived from that pathway. The organizers of the symposium recognized that it would not be possible to cover all groups of compounds derived from shikimic acid and therefore decided to omit any detailed discussion of flavonoid compounds and lignin. Research in these two areas has been the subject of several recent symposiums and/or published volumes. By omitting these topics, it was possible to devote more attention to other, equally interesting products derived from the shikimate pathway. Each chapter in the volume authoritat~vely speaks for itself on an important topic. However, the reader is invited to enjoy the lead chapter by Ulrich Weiss who describes his role in the research on the shikimate pathway during 1952/53. We are grateful to Dr. Weiss for this charming account of his work carried out in the laboratory of Dr. B. D. Davis during that period. Those who attended the Silver Anniversary Meeting were privileged to hear Dr. Gestur Johnson reminisce about the founding of the Society, initially called the Plant Phenolics Group of North America. All the contributions illustrate the wide importance of research which improves the health and the economic and social well being of mankind. The authors are to be congratulated on their lucid exposition of the progress of research in their subject area and for their patience while this book was being produced. The members of the Phytochemical Society of North America can feel proud of having another of their excellent symposia series in print. It is fitting, therefore, that this volume is dedicated to one of the founder members of the Society, Ted Geissman, who has inspired so many of us with his wisdom, teaching and wonderful support of all our endeavours. The concept was developed in the laboratory of Dr. Heinrich Waelsch as a result of studies related to the metabolism of glutamic acid and glutamine. It was welcomed by a number of neurochemists who felt that the concept had validity and would help explain metabolic phenomena that were otherwise quite puzzling. The concept gradually achieved general acceptance, and by 1971 the amount of information that could profit by being examined from the point of view of metabolic compartmentation had increased sufficiently to warrant a symposium on the subject ('Metabolic Compartmentation in the Brain,' Balazs and Cremer, eds. , MacMillan, 1973). The Symposium was presented under the sponsorship of the Division of Analytical Chemistry, and was held on September 11 and 12,1967, at the 154th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Chicago, Illinois. The papers presented herein represent a renaissance of interest in reflectance spectroscopy. The techni~ue of reflec tance spectroscopy is not, of course, a new techni~ue, however, it has only been applied to problems of a chemical interest in the last decade or so. The instrumentation for this techni~ue in the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared regions of the spectrum has been available for many years. New and exciting research is being carried out at the present time to extend these techni~ues to the infrared and far infrared regions as well.
