The aim of these Symposia is to bring together, by personal invitation, a limited number of leading scientists from various countries to discuss the current research situation within the field and to define the most urgent problems to be solved. One of the most important fields in modern biome dical research concerns the structure and function of biological membranes. Research on this subject is very active and important scientific contributions appear at an increasing rate. It was therefore considered highly appropriate to devote Nobel Symposium 34 to the struc ture of membranes in order to get an expert summary of what is now known in the field. The Symposium was held at Hotel Billingehus in Skovde (about 150 km from Goteborg), Sweden, from June 7 to 11, 1976. In addition to the grant from the Nobel Foundation financial support was received from the No bel Institute of Chemistry of the Royal Academy of Sciences and from the Science Fund of Wilhelm and Martina Lundgren. The Symposium was attended by some 50 scientists. The papers in this Volume had been distributed in ad vance to all partiCipants. This work gradually grew into a… system of ideas on the electron structure of condensed matter which is now known as the configurational model. This model is based on the assumption of the preferential formation of the most stable configurations of the localized va lence electrons in condensed matter. The existence of these stable configurations and the exchange of electrons with the de localized (collective-state) subsystem determines those prop erties which are related to the electron structure. The conclu sions which can be drawn from the applications of the configura tional model are only qualitative but they explain quite clearly the nature of various properties of condensed matter, and they are helpful in the search for materials with specified properties. The American edition has been corrected and supplemented in many minor respects. Moreover, the opportunity was taken to revise thoroughly the section on the fundamentals of the configura tional model in the light of the latest theoretical developments. other parts of the book have been shortened to eliminate material which is not of fundamental significance or has not yet been de veloped sufficiently fully. 304 pp. Englisch.

My colleague and friend Gianantonnio Sacchi from Milan and I met with Professor Prager in Savognin in July 1974, where I submitted to them my first ideas for a treatise on structural optimization: It should cover the whole domain from basic theory to practical applications, and deal with various materials, various types of structures, various functions required of the structures, and various types of cost . . Obviously, this was to be a team effort, to total three or four volumes, to be written in a balanced manner as textbooks and handbooks. Nothing similar existed at that time, and, indeed, nothing has been published to date. Professor Prager was immedi ately in favor of such a project. He agreed to write a first part on optimality criteria with me and to help me in the general organization of the series. Since Professor Sacchi was willing to write the text on variational methods, it remained to find authors for parts on the mathematical programming approach to structural optimization (and, more generally, on numerical methods) and on practical optimal design procedures in metal and concrete. 348 pp. Englisch.

In the first ten to twenty years after Laue's discovery, a very complete theory was developed for the diffraction of x-rays and, later, of…electrons. This theory led to equations by means of which it was possible to compute the intensity pattern for a given structure. The theory of structure analysis came to mean that of the diffraction of radiation. In 1935, Patterson pointed out a way leading to the solution of the inverse problem: the finding of the structure from a given intensity distribution pattern. At first the conservatism of researchers, and then the war, hampered the de velopment and broad application of the ideas set forth in this work. It is likely that as our knowledge of prostanoids in different diseases increases, new diseases may also be targets for drugs related to these lipid mediators. The immense potential of the photon beam from SPEAR became obvious as soon as experiments using the beam started to run in May, 1974. The rapid growth of interest in using the beam since that time and the growth of other facilities using high-energy storage rings (see Chapters 1 and 3) demonstrates how the users of this source of radiation are finding applications in an increasingly wide variety of fields of science and technology. In assembling the list of authors for this book, we have tried to cover as many of the applications of synchrotron radiation, both realized already or in the process of realization, as we can. Inevitably, there are omissions both through lack of space and because many projects are at an early stage. The ever increasing amount of experimental data was in need of some unified method of classification which would yield unambiguous and possibly complete information on the polarographic behavior of organic substances. Dr. Zuman's book presents an original attempt to meet this need by providing a system based on correlations between the polaro graphic half-wave potentials of organic depolarizers and their Hammett constants. I consider this a very happy conception, for, more than any other book yet written, it brings polarography nearer to the organic chemist; and it will undoubtedly convince him that, in its application to his subject, the method is more than a mere analytical tool. The author hardly needs any introduction. During many years of research in the field of organic polarography, he has published numerous papers on a variety of problems; his latest interest is the application of the Hammett-Taft equation to polarographic measure ments, in which he has done pioneering work. It does not cover in any detail the experimental and instrumental aspects of practical separations. The author has developed…the subject starting from the synthesis and structure of the ion exchangers employed, through the thermodynamics of sorption selectivity and the equilibrium dynamics of ion sorption, to the kinetics and dynamics of non-equilibrium ion-exchange systems. Throughout this treatment the additional factors arising from the exchange of complex organic ions, as opposed to simple mineral ones, have been interwoven. The author has stressed the application in the separation of organic ions with biological activity, many of which are synthesized in biotechnological processes, and in view of this he uses the expression 'physico-chemical biotechnology.' In practice, however, his in-depth treatment is applicable to any charged organic species with multifunction ality and/or high molecular weight, and is therefore by no means restricted to biologically active materials, and certainly not to those molecules from a biotechnological source. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. One of the most importa. nt operations in such construc tion i…s the laying of pile foundations. In recent years deep pile foundations have been developed, with heavy loads on the piling. This technique is necessary when penetrating dense sand-clay soils or when sinking the piles to hard rock. The operations are very laborious, requiring a. great expenditure of time and effort, and this Significantly low ers the time of productive work (actual driving of piles) and reduces the quality of the work. To improve the efficiency of pile driving under such conditions, it is desirable to use electroosmosis. By elec troosmosis we refer to the movement of pore water through the ground, directed from anode to cathode under the in fluence of direct current. This current, in passing through clayey sOils, causes drying of the soil at the anode and moistening of the soil at the cathode. Therefore, if a pile that is to be driven is connected to the negative terminal of a. direct-current generator, electroosmosis will cause a film of moisture from the soil to settle on the surface of the pile, and a zone of electroosmotically water-saturated soil will form about the pile. This situation permits a temporary diminution of the resistance of the ground to the sinking of the pile. 68 pp. Englisch.

Because of the pervasiveness of the strong interactions in all aspects of high energy physics, QCD is central to many problems in elementary particle physics. Therefore, this workshop was organized to provide a forum in which the theory Quantum Chromodynamics cou 1 d be confronted with experi ment. The workshop was organ i zed in four sessions, each of which concentrated on a major experimental arena in which a hard QCD process can be measured experimentally. A fifth session was rlevoted to global issues which effect all QCD processes. Each session began with a survey of the theoretical developments in the particular area and concluded with a round table which discussed the various information presented in the course of the discussions. A session of the workshop was devoted to the direct production of high transverse momentum photons in hadronic interactions. The Conference was held under the auspices of the International Society of Cardiology, the International Cardiology Foundation and the European Atherosclerosis Group. Therefore, workers were brought together from several coun tries and from various disciplines that do not ordinarily intercom municate for free exchange of data and ideas. Six broad subject areas were introduced by single papers; three of them are included in this volume. In the discussion which followed each formal pres entation, the participants attempted to reconcile disparate data and interpretations and to reach .a clear identification of important areas of ignorance and of crucial questions for future research. The format of the proceedings does not follow precisely that of the Conference itself. The formal papers are included, somewhat ab breviated, and excerpts of the discussion have been gathered under a series of topics arranged in logical sequence. Therefore, the quoted statements do not necessarily appear in order or in the place in the program where they were made. While an attempt was made to restrict the subject areas covered at the meeting to those experimental systems which have been biochemi cally characterized to some extent, it will also be noted that some contributions to this volume represent a preliminary iden tification of interesting regulatory substances which might reasonably be expected to act at the cell surface. This book is divided into four sections reflecting the subject areas covered during the course of the meeting. The first section entitled 'Membrane Structure and Receptor Function' is intended as an overview of the role of membrane structure in determining the regulatory properties, physical state, structure and location of cell surface receptors. Biomagnetic research has greatly increased since the publication of the first volume of this series. Wh…ile much of this work has been reported in various international journals, there exists a need for this work to be collected together in one place. This book covers a rather wide area of research, both with respect to the strength of the field, ranging from 'zero' to 150,000 oersteds, and with respect to the various specimens and their biological functions. It is designed primarly to help clarify the action of magnetic fields on biological systems with the hope of achieving a better understanding of the fundamental physiological processes occurring in them. In some chapters it is suggested that magnetic fields could ultimately be used in the treatment of disease.
